After years of wearing no make-up, very rapidly approaching 40 (gulp) my new years resolution is to start wearing it again. I last regularly wore it in my 20s but even then only for nights out so I feel like I'm starting again!

I'm going to buy doublewear foundation I think, but also need something to help with my purple puffy bags. I don't want lots of products, so what is the number one? Touche éclat or something else??

Also if I'm buying from boots, where would you recommend I get a blusher from? I have no idea what I used to wear 🤔

Thanks all!

For puffy bags touché eclat won't help. It will highlight them. It's used for dark sunken circles and highlighting rather than bags. Whilst you're being matched up for the EL Double wear get them to match you to the Double wear concealer too. That should do the trick.

FlyingHighwithSNkids · 30/12/2022 03:42

Thank you @MistyRock! Glad I asked - they definitely don't need highlighting!

Just to add, are you sure you want EL DW? It's a tricky one to master, (drys quickly, pretty thick) especially if you're a newbie to make up. I think you'll be better off with something like Clinique Even Better foundation or Even Better Glow (no sparkles just radiant skin), topped off with a cream blusher.

FlyingHighwithSNkids · 30/12/2022 04:51

Ooh thank you, appreciate those recommendations. I've just seen so many people saying doublewear is the best they've used, that was the only reason I'd picked that one. Clinique Glow sounds good 🤔. I never got on with cream blusher as a youngster but I'm not so young anymore..

I'm pretty 'in' to my make up and double wear wasn't for me. I have decent skin, slightly dry, a few lines and Clinique is my go to. It's easy to apply, doesn't leave a mask like finish and makes me look like a better version of me. DW can look a bit caked if not used sparingly and for m looks like I wearing make up. I just don't have the time for it. Mac do a lovely range of powder blushers. Pay them a visit and ask what they'd recommend colour wise. They do all sorts. Matte, shimmer etc. I prefer a slight sheen. Not full on glitter but a touch of glow.

It is recommended a lot, but usually on You tube and with influencers, as the fashion is to have heavy thick layers of make up (and not to mention yellow toned!!!) but in the real world it can look heavy and caked, especially if you are a novice.

FlyingHighwithSNkids · 30/12/2022 05:31

Definitely not going for the 'caked' look! If I go for Clinique foundation would a concealer from there too be best?

I've only used their brush concealer which was a light reflective one, so I can't recommend one suitable for you, but I'm sure they'll direct you to the correct one for you.

MistyRock · 30/12/2022 05:43

This one looks like it ticks all your boxes!!!

MistyRock · 30/12/2022 05:54

It ISN'T light reflective so perfect for puffiness. ☺️

MistyRock · 30/12/2022 06:02

How could I forget. Benefit blushers are wonderful. They do so many. Dandelion isn't really a blusher so don't bother with that one. It's more of a glow finishing powder. I love it but it won't do much as a blusher. Ask the sales assistant to match you up depending on the look you're after. And it's available in most boots branches.

pizzazze · 30/12/2022 08:20

Best concealer I've ever tried is nars creamy concealer. I won't use anything else.

For puffiness you'll need an extra product, something with caffeine in. The ordinary have a cheap caffeine serum that I find works quite well although you may need a little primer over the top to help the concealer go on nicely over it.

I wouldn't wear double wear at your age tbh. It's quite thick and matte. Too much. Use the nars concealer where you need it and blend, much more natural than a whole face of make up.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 30/12/2022 08:22

AYU make up is good.

Coffeepot72 · 30/12/2022 08:25

Are you sure you need foundation? Just wondering if you might be better trying something lighter, like a tinted moisturiser or BB cream (Boots No 7 are good here) then only using a concealer on the areas where you need a bit of extra help?

TheOtherBoleynGirls · 30/12/2022 08:28

I’ve just started using Soap & Glory’s camouflage concealer and I really like it. It has a concealer, a highlighter and a setting powder so you can mix it up depending on what you need on different parts of your face. You can get it in Boots.

TheOtherBoleynGirls · 30/12/2022 08:30

Sorry, it’s called Kick Ass concealor

imalreadygone · 30/12/2022 08:36

Step away from the double wear unless you need it to last through a 12 hour shift or something. It's really heavy perfect for some occasions but it will be noticeable make up and the trend now is for a much more natural look.

imalreadygone · 30/12/2022 08:37

I would head to a boots and go to eg a clarins or clinique counter personally

IET · 30/12/2022 08:41

A cheaper option to double wear is L'Oréal infallible. I really rate it and since you're a beginner and maybe aren't sure what you want in terms of coverage etc, I'd avoid spending huge amounts.

I use an eye blur cream under a teeny bit of concealer under my eyes. I used to slap on concealer, but that can just end up sitting in the creases and making me look worse.

I'm turning 40 this year too btw!

CharlotteSometimes1 · 30/12/2022 08:44

I’d think about trying the Eborium bb creams, they come out of the tube white, but when you put them in your face they colour develops and matches your skin. It’s very light and for people who like a full coverage wouldn’t be enough, but with the addition of your concealer would give you a lovely no make, make up look.

AltheaVestr1t · 30/12/2022 08:56

I've had some success with using a red colour corrector under a yellow toned concealer under eyes. Sounds ridiculous, but it does work!

TheFormidableMrsC · 30/12/2022 08:59

I really love Collection stretch concealer. It's really creamy and doesn't settle into lines. Apply with a small brush and blend. Have a look at Katie Jane Hughes or Sali Hughes as they have hundreds of tutorials to watch if you're a novice. My advice would be a shade or two lighter than your foundation and less is more. You can always build if you need to.

Fancyateapottea · 30/12/2022 14:03

I’d second erborian bb cream or even one of their cc creams. I use both and the bb cream just gives a bit more coverage. I put a little bit of laura mercier translucent powder over the top to mattify.
I love ELDW but use it only occasionally and put it on with a wet makeup sponge.
The erborian creams are better for everyday

Cheddarcheeseandsodabread · 16/01/2023 18:44

Just like you, I had not worn make-up for some time and was unsure what shade of foundation or even which type of foundation would be best. In my mid-50s, I was going to be meeting up with family I'd not seen for a long time, and wanted to look my best.

I bit the bullet and went to my local Boots store, up to the Boots makeup/skincare counter, and asked for some help. I had a skin match test done, and within about 5 mins had the perfect foundation and powder, and was advised to use a bronzer (always thought they were for tanned people!) instead of a blusher. Items were om 3for2 so the bronzer was free. More to the point, when I use the makeup, it looks great and very natural.

Isaidnomorecrisps · 16/01/2023 19:07

I went to the Bobbi Brown counter in John Lewis and said can you make these go away….it’s amazing, not cheap but lasts forever - going to get them now to write down (and I was a Touche Eclat etc fan before)

  1. vitamin enriched face base - cream and put a tiny amount on, makes the rest stick nicely
  2. corrector - I have light bisque - that sort of evens everything out
  3. skin full cover concealer, I have cool sand - tiny bit again
have wanted for years to share this! - then I don’t need foundation, just a bit of blusher (I use Beauty Pie pots) and mascara. It takes two minutes and I honestly look fresh and younger (even my daughter agrees!)
