19th-century/Victorian fashion - any experts?

Any historical fashion experts out there?

I am trying to narrow down who these two might be in my family tree, and I was wondering if anyone could narrow down the sort of time they might have been dressed like this. I have assumed 19th century but even this could be completely wrong!

I'm not sure if there is a better place for this but I thought worth a shot...

To add in case helpful - the lady has what looks like fresh flowers on her bonnet thing (apple blossom?), which isn't clearly visible on the pic because of my appalling photography skills/lighting!

I would guess around 1850 to 1860 , I’m not an expert though just have an interest in this kind of thing.

I think a bit earlier. Definitely first half of the 19th century, possibly 1830-1840?

probably some expert will turn up soon, if not, try Twitter and use the hashtag #twitterstorians. Twitter is full of world expert historians knowledgeable about every possible topic, who will gladly debate exact costume details with you, I’m sure!

I think she is wearing mourning dress- she has purple coloured flowers and an amethyst brooch and they moved to purple colours as the mourning period continued. The flowers are probably a type with a 'meaning'. She may also have a handkerchief in her hand to symbolise 'tears'. The style of the dress and hair and his waistcoat cut say anything from about 1850-60.

If you post it in the Genealogy section, people might be more expert. I have just looked at a picture of Victoria and Albert from 1840s and it is very similar styling - hair + outfits

She is also wearing mourning jewellery on her writs- the black 'bracelet' with the miniature portrait in it.

I'd go for mid-century, too.

Not everyone would have worn tip top highest fashion, but if you were having your portrait done, you'd probably choose your best, newest clothes.

Thank you for this everyone - so helpful and interesting!

Yes Victorian - similarly to pp I’d think around 1850-1860.

I agree mid 1840s to 1850. Remember that although fashions change there is always a bit of a time lag, especially regionally. Eg nobody dresses in the latest fashion all the time, people kept clothes for longer then and had fewer items of clothing.
So depending on the region it might be slightly later.

Insertdeadcatsnamehere · 29/12/2022 13:40

I'd have gone for 1840s based on the bonnet too.
