where to start with new make up?

Where do I begin? - or how do I get advice without submitting to some plaster of paris treatment in a dept store?

I need to update everything. I am 51 and have light skin and slightly fading red hair. I need something which brightens my face up and looks more current than the stuff I have been using for years (decades probably). I haven't a clue how to start, I don't want to be all weird stripey instagrammy but I do want to look more current than I do. how do I get real life advice from someone who looks like an actual human being with skin?

There are plenty of skincare makeup around, serum foundations and cc creams, tinted lip balms instead of lipstick. It's all about application, just enough to look a better version of you. Nadine Baggot on YouTube is a good one to follow, she knows all the current products and goes for a very natural look.

Go to a large Boots or department store and ask a beauty adviser to do your make up.

I’m 52 and don’t wear heavy make up. I wear Glossier and Bobbi Brown primarily. ( light cream or gel formulations) I would give a wide steer to a huge amount of MUA’s that you see in department stores and probably go to a Space NK for a trial. A lot of the Bobbi Brown and Laura Mercier are also good if you don’t have a Space NK. I would let them know that you’re looking to start from scratch but would only be buying a couple of things a month so you don’t feel pressured to buy everything they use on you. ( Glossier are very natural looking products but are online only)

If you can afford it then don’t be afraid to experiment.

I love make up and refuse to be told at 48 that I shouldn’t be wearing as much. I have make up for rock chick/goth through to minimalist chic and everything in between.

Find a foundation that you feel comfortable with then play with eye shadows, lipstick etc.

Go to a large Boots or department store and ask a beauty adviser to do your make up.

Do you just pick a make up counter and ask?

I mean I'm going out tomorrow night? I could test this. Will they do your actual make up? I will obv buy stuff.

Will they do my make up and show me how to do it? Like they do?

I love watching Lisa Eldridge videos on YouTube; such a relaxing way to spend an evening with a cup of tea 😁 I'd recommend beginning there.

She has a series of basic technique videos, as well as a range of other looks, some very natural, some more glam, but I've learned lots of tricks and tips from watching her, and have been inspired to try new looks too.

Wayne Goss on YouTube is really informative and I think he caters well to mature skin

Book a consultation with a brand you like. I had Almay at 16, Clinique in my 20s, Clarins in my early 30s, and at nearly 40 the lady at the Benefit counter sent.me.over to Urban Decay where, despite the funny names and bright turquoise eyes of the assistants, I found massive help and an excellent range of colour correctors. Now in my mid 40s I wear House of Colour makeup after a colour consultation with them, I do their 90 second makeup.

So pick a brand you like, talk to the assistant, book a consultation and go from there.

Just wanted to echo those that have said that if you can afford it, go to a counter of a brand you think you can trust and let them roll with it.

If your on a tight budget the there are so many youtube tutorials and other online resources that you can easily get some direction there. Boots have THE BEST sale this time of year too.

I couldn't live without my make up bag!
