What are you decluttering from your wardrobe?

I am having a bit of a wardrobe sort out after buying some bits in the sales.

I'm going to put some things into storage and some are going to the charity shop. I have realised that I haven't worn them in at least a year... Things like a very loud boilersuit which I love but which I don't have the guts to wear, maybe a pink satin, very girly skirt as again, I just don't think I can pull it off and then boring stuff like short waterproof boots and wellies as I'm replacing the two of them with one pair of country boots. I might get rid of a coat as well.

Interested to hear what other people are getting rid of due to underuse. Hopefully that will put me off buying the wrong things!

I was having a sort out today, I binned 3 thermal tops that had bobbling, a oasis sequin jumper I hardly wore as it was scratchy at the neck, still have more to do.

Notonyournellykelly · 27/12/2022 19:53

Yes, I'm a bit the same; warm things I wear a lot and need to be binned as they're worn out, but impractical things don't get worn and get moved on after barely being worn! Trying to learn my lesson and have only bought things I will definitely wear in the sales

Me too I have thermal leggings which are past their best, but as I wear them under other things they are not seen, same with the tops I suppose, but I have so many I didn't mind letting them go. I seem to live in thermals from October to March so they get a lot of wear.

I love a clear out and do them seasonally, or essentially any time one of those charity bags comes in the door or we are taking anything else at all to a charity shop. I do a capsule wardrobe now and am much happier so find it quite easy get rid of things.

As a general rule if I've not worn it that season or that year (unless it's something genuinely useful such as a pair of wellies or a proper waterproof coat) then it goes.

If I kept it from the last declutter and still didn't reach for it, it goes.

If I try it on and dislike any thing about the fit at all or it doesn't feel right 'somehow' or doesn't feel comfortable, it goes.

If it sticks out like a sore thumb and doesn't go with anything else I own (unless it's for a specific occasion) then it goes.

If it doesn't fit, or fit the way I want anymore; it goes.

If it no longer fits with my lifestyle (eg I no longer need to wear heels and am not in need of anything corporate or very formal for work or socialising), it goes. Being very honest with yourself about your lifestyle helps with this, and being honest about whether your things reflect you as you currently are or whether you bought them for a person you'd like to be- but aren't, which I used to be guilty of.

Anything that can be relegated to the loungewear/ugly house clothes/painting drawer if it's comfy (eg cardigans, old t-shirts, jumpers), then I do that to give it a second life until its done with.

If I have a few of a similar thing (eg 3 red jumpers) then I'll get rid of whichever I wear least.

I cant say I've ever missed a single thing I've got rid of.

Anything I can't fit into anymore has gone to the charity shop. Old undies are going in the bin.
I've got certain things altered so they are more wearable.
I usually use tatty stuff for wearing round the house, to get extra wear out of it and then old teeshirts and cotton stuff become cleaning rags.
I sent a bunch of really unwearable stuff and shoes that were damaged to be recycled.
I think anything with heels is going, I don't think I'm going to wear those again.
But going forward, I'm going to try and buy less to avoid needing to clear it out!

story of my life: tops with tiny moth holes, tops with oil cooking stains down the front, tops that have been worn and washed till the shape is ruined.
so frustrating every year the same situation my whites are never pristine for long :(

For the oil stains: lay the garment flat and rub washing-up liquid into the stains. Then pour white vinegar onto it. Put it in a bucket/wash bowl for 24 hours. Wash on warm. Works a treat.

I've rescued many a T-shirt my late DH wore (he did all the cooking and spurned an apron) and while it means they stay on the summer dog-walking list for style purposes, I cherish them and can wear them without looking an utter minger.

My wardrobe rail broke! Which precipitated a hasty declutter. Unfortunately I could only part with three items - a pair of practical black trousers that I'd forgotten I had (but which never really flattered), a lovely cream silk boden blouse that I found for peanuts in a charity shop that I have never actually worn as it is mysteriously always too wrinkled to wear (and is a bugger to iron) and another item I can't remember!

Comeback25 · 28/12/2022 08:41

I have a one in one out policy and i've become ruthless about it. I have one chest of drawers and a small wardrobe only. If i feel uncomfortable in something, then it's charity shopped. If it starts to look tatty, charity. Shoes rub? Gone.
You can only wear one outfit at a time.
A friend of mine has 4 wardrobes for different sizes!!!!

lindyloo57 · 28/12/2022 09:11

I must admit I have four wardrobes and one chest of drawers, for undies, scarfs and belts everything else is hanging, thats why I tell myself I need 4 wardrobes, I really could get rid of half my clothes I don't wear, but I don't have the courage.

Notonyournellykelly · 28/12/2022 09:21

I like the idea of a one in, one out policy and I keep meaning to do it. But I fear the Kondo Regret! I've sold and decluttered so much that I regret getting rid of. If it's in good condition, I now store things in my loft space.

I have a small wardrobe and then a chest of drawers for underwear, sports kit and pjs. I hang everything else. But I do have some cloth storage bags in the loft with things I can't part with.

However, if I then don't miss or use the things in storage, after a year or so, I do then get rid of them.

Things going into storage now are the aforementioned boilersuit, some cotton trousers and some walking boots.

I'm selling some tops with annoying necklines. First up is two wide necked sweaters which mean its impossible to layer something under or not flash bra straps.

dudsville · 28/12/2022 09:29

I did a very satisfying clearout and tidy a couple of days ago, a giant bin bag full. Im pretty good at this apart from two pairs of boots that I haven't worn in many years. Will this be the year i finally send them on their way???

dudsville · 28/12/2022 13:45

This thread motivated me to get rid of I've of the pairs of boots!

Floisme · 28/12/2022 14:03

I've just redonated quite a few charity shop purchases: some Boden wide legs that were an odd shape, a Cos sweat shirt - also wrong shape (Bit of a theme here.) A Nicole Farhi cardigan that was a label victim choice, a Levi denim shirt that was a bad fit. What I take from this is that, much as I enjoy charity shops, they are not conducive to thoughtful shopping and that I regularly make poor choices there.

I'm also retiring from my job so I've cleared out some office wear dresses. I'm hoping to reinvent a lot of my former work clothes but there was no way back for the dresses.

Otherwise not wearing something for a year is no time at all to me and I normally keep things for far longer than that.

I also find that out-of-comfort-zone buys are worth a bit of thought. Even if you don't wear them, they were presumably chosen because they (sorry if this sounds pretentious) 'spoke to you' in some way and I think it's worth trying to figure it out.

BestIsWest · 28/12/2022 14:16

I’m also retiring so anything too corporate will be going. I will keep a couple of black dresses but the more formal trousers/ tops will be going. To be honest my workwear has become less formal over the last few years and most of my dresses will be repurposed as they are casual enough.

I’ve realised I detest sweatshirt fabric so anything made of that will be going.

I’ve got a few lovely things (velvet jacket, silk skirt) that I haven’t worn for a few years but I’ll be keeping them with an eye to wearing for special events instead of inevitably buying something new.

I’m also going to be strict with colour.

Floisme · 28/12/2022 14:49

Oh and a tailored black jacket that I'd bought well over a decade ago because I kept reading that every woman needed a black jacket in her wardrobe. Absolute nonsense and more fool me for falling for it - I didn't wear wore it once.

Floisme · 28/12/2022 14:55

Whoops sorry about the random 'wore' Blush

Supersimkin2 · 28/12/2022 18:09

Knackered tees and pants = cleaning cloths, always.

I’m donating less cos I don’t know how much clothes will rise in price this year. Too old for tat.

Boring but not as boring as regret.
