Hi all
My daughter has just started uni and made an awesome new group of friends. She loves going to the pub with them and is comfy there, but they like going out out...
What should she wear to clubs?
I'd like to get her a few bits to help her confidence up if I can.
She a dinky size 8, only 5ft 1 and doesn't enjoy heels
Help me please!

I think it’s lovely that you’re so supportive of your daughter. University was nearly two decades ago now for me! However, I am not a fan of heels and I used to wear converse, jeans or leggings and a tube top or halter neck out clubbing. Since y2k fashion is back in style these days, maybe that’s a good idea?

Look at Urban Outfitters. Very small tops and very baggy trousers or very short dresses seems to be the way to go for clubbing at my daughters uni.

Quitelikeacatslife · 23/12/2022 03:24

You prob need to go with her, if she's quiet like my daughter she might not want a bodycon dress like sone of my friends daughters wear? My daughter does like superdry and urban outfitters, she's more arty so probably the 90s style dress tights cardi and docs style. But it is a bit personal. Maybe in her photos you can see what her friends wear?
Or tbh she needs to find her own style

Back in the 90s when I was clubbing at uni it was baggy jeans or a short skirt and a tight top/crop top with Nike Air Max. As someone else said, 90s fashion is back in now so maybe something like that?

DD gets tiny tops from Urban Outfitters and various online shops.

Maybe get her some vouchers for some shops

KimmySchmitt · 23/12/2022 07:16

I think this is something your daughter has to work out for herself... She should find some Instagram or TikTok accounts to follow and use her friends' outfits for inspiration. It's a few years since I went to a club but when in doubt, jeans and a nice top. Vouchers for Christmas is a good idea by PP.

One of the best bits of being a student is being able to rock up to a club night in Jeans and a T-shirt if necessary! Really the best thing for her would be for you to give her some money and she can go shopping with her friends, then her style can evolve organically.

AnyRandomName · 23/12/2022 10:19

I'm in a uni town and here it's all jeans, trainers and crop tops.

However your DD's town might be different, only she can suggest what they wear. So perhaps vouchers or a trip together to buy some things if she's interested.

You sound like a lovely mum by the way.

theswoot · 23/12/2022 10:21

Yeah I agree with PPs about casual Y2K stuff being back in. I went out the other week for the first time in ages and the youngest women were in wide bootcut jeans, crop tops and trainers.

Sandysandwich · 23/12/2022 10:31

If she is nervous about not dressing right and her friends aren't helpful, most clubs will have facebook or instagram pages where they promote and there will be pictures of people so she can see the clothes that are worn in a specific club

5128gap · 23/12/2022 21:06

The 18 year olds in my city tend to wear either cargo pants/wide trousers and cropped tops/bras, or tiny lycra dresses in bright colours with big trainers. Anything from the going out section of pretty little thing would be popular here. But it probably varies geographically. Tbh your DD would be best asking what her friends are wearing, or failing that check the SM pictures posted by the venue as suggested already.

maddy68 · 23/12/2022 21:14

Honestly keep out of this. She can wear whatever she likes in. Club

PinkArt · 23/12/2022 22:19

Very kindly, whatever her mum gets won't be 'right'. Clothing and style can still be quite tribal at her age and the unspoken rules of what is cool and what isn't will be beyond those of us over 18! Plus if she hasn't found her own style yet, now is the perfect time to do it.
I'd agree with the suggestion of vouchers so she can go and find stuff herself, or go shopping with her new mates.

OhIdoLike2bBesideTheSeaside · 23/12/2022 23:42

Why don't you take her on a shopping day out with a nice lunch and then let her choose some stuff?

My mum used to do that with me I loved it
