What make-up/highligher do you use on your inner eyelids if you have dry and/or older skin?

I'm fed up with having discoloured eyelids (I'm very pale, freckly and sun-damaged). Eyelids have both redness and some blue veins showing through.

I thought I'd make an effort and wear eyeshadow today to try to even things out (Mac Paintpot in Painterly) I'm reminded why I don't usually bother - it looks dry and cakey. Same thing happened with Trinny products.

The inner third of the eye is the worst for looking dry if I dare to use any product on it. Is there something glowy and non-drying and not glittery for the inner eye you would recommend? I have the same problem if I just use concealer - the inner eye has some darkness so needs some help, but looks dry once any product is on that area. I suspect eyeshadow primers will do the same.

Do I need a Touche Eclat type thing? I see Benefit has something called Eye Beam Gel Highlighter. Charlotte Tilbury?

I will see what I can do via skincare to get my eyelids hydrated. Do you put eye cream on the actual eyelid? For me that would sting ...

I have had this problem for some years and have learnt a few things by trial and error. First you need to find a moisturising eye cream that works for your eyelids. The very creamy ones are more likely to get in the eyes (I wear contacts). I’ve had good results with Bobbi Brown Intense Repair Eye Cream which is a stiff texture. You pick up a little and warm between your ring fingers then pat on the lids. Next I use concealer sparingly to even out the colour. With eyeshadows I’ve had similar problems with Mac Paintbox and good results with Charlotte Tilbury Eyes to Mesmerise cream eyeshadow Oyster Pearl patted on with edge of little finger. I then add a darker pencil or powder shadow if I want more emphasis. The CT shadow makes everything look lighter and smoother contrary to usual advice to avoid shimmer on lined skin.

  1. Find a moisturiser you can use around the eye, there are lots of eye related ones, I'm too lazy so just use my ordinary face one and don't put it all over the eye, just a bit under and around and about (not on the lids).
  2. Use a concealer or foundation over the top of this, just a small amount, blended into the foundation, or patted on the inner eye, see Ali Andreea on how to do this and keep lots of skin showing and look fresh (she's great for the more mature person).
  3. Use matt shadow so the glitter doesn't sit in the wrinkles!
