Reiss cobalt blue wool overcoat - £25

JennyForeigner · 21/12/2022 16:39

Joseph leather trousers with the tags still in. £895 in the shops, £10. This was Monday.

I feel like the universe wants me to vinted them for Ukraine.

Craftycorvid · 21/12/2022 16:58

Reading this in awe at the bargains! Where on earth do you all live? Mine hasn’t been an especially vintage year for charity shopping finds. I guess the best one was a brand new tweed field jacket - from a ‘country sports’ kind of label - still had its tags on and retailed for £120.00 I bought it for £20.00

Niftythrifter · 21/12/2022 17:01

Ooh forgot the Didrikson parka was. £12

Nothing branded but today I got a nice pink jumper, green ribbed top and some black flats with buckles on (brand new). Earlier in the year I got a colourful midi skirt with a swirly pattern on which I love brand new with tags on. All these items were around 3 quid.

Mine are all books and homeware so I won't bore everyone. I
I've all but stopped buying clothes in charity shops. I declutter very regularly and noticed that most often the things I wasn't wearing and were getting rid of were almost always previous 'bargains' from the charity shop.

I know what you mean, I find it’s easy to get carried away so have to remind myself it’s not a bargain if I don’t wear it! I’m also aiming for a less cluttered wardrobe of things I love so I don’t want to add lots of impulse buys which I don’t end up wearing. I try to keep a wish list and only buy if it’s on that list - it’s surprising how often something I’m looking for appears in a charity shop. I also find the list helps me make the decision if the prices are higher. I’ve bought 2 pairs of boots from charity shops in the last couple of years which were £50 in total but both were styles I’d been looking for and knew I would wear, and good quality.

There's two charity shops near me and they're a bit like the Room of Requirement. I've got some great bits of clothing, homeware and board games from them- not necessarily because they're an expensive brand or bnwt- but just because they were exactly what I was looking for at the time.
E.g. easy one- wanted new jigsaws for dc, one had a box of 4, new, with a loved character on (80p).
I really wanted a longline cardigan, in khaki or grey. Got both (new look and Cos)- £3/£4 respectively.
Needed a smart bag for work- lovely grey leather rucksack £4.
Dress for a christening, I fancied long and maybe floral- some obscure London brand, maxi, abstract floral-£4. Also a ted baker one for DD £3.
So they're my gems, just because they're what I was looking for!

Lacoste mens wool coat £20
Royal Worcester coffee set £20
Ralph Lauren driving shoes £10.95
Laura Ashley bead trimmed quilt £15
Silver and gold ring £1

Mainly bought in Wiltshire and I gave the Royal Worcester to my millionaire friend for Christmas this week. She loves ceramics and doesn't go shopping much.
I worked as an charity area manager for a few years so old habits die hard. I don't haggle and I buy for me or as presents. I also prefer vintage workmanship.

Divebar2021 · 22/12/2022 08:43

Im glad you’re finding good stuff… my charity shops have gone completely off the boil. My friend and I were commenting about how drab and empty they were looking. I wasn’t sure if people weren’t selling the good stuff now. In any case I’m going to try and wear what I have more this year… I still have a pair of thrifted silver Vivienne Westwood shoes that have never left the house.

MaxMara full length camel coat £8.99! Yes £8.99. It's perfect. I've bought loads of other things this year, but the coat is the standout piece.

Lentilweaver · 22/12/2022 12:20

I have only recently started charity shopping and haven't found great bargains yet: mostly M and S, Zara and H and M near me. Any reccos for charity shops near SE London? Or further?

lollipoprainbow · 22/12/2022 12:29

Gorgeous teal blue Coach handbag genuine too I've checked.

Floisme · 22/12/2022 12:31

It's not been an epic charity shop year for me but I did get a Dr Martens bag the likes of which I'd been hunting unsuccessfully for several years: tough but worn leather (I don't want buttery soft on a working bag), cross body messenger / satchel style, roomy but not so big it does my back in, and best of all, proper functioning buckle fasteners. (I detest poppers on a bag.) At £40 not cheap for a local charity shop but I'd have happily paid double that because it was exactly what I wanted.

TheFormidableMrsC · 22/12/2022 13:27

I found a stunning and absolutely immaculate Max Mara jacket in our local cancer research shop. It was marked at £4. I googled it and it was actually £800 retail so I asked for the manager and told her. She did actually know and it shouldn't have gone on the shop floor as it was to go on eBay. Everybody thought I was mad but I've benefited from research and I'd have felt guilty every time I wore it!

Other than that a lovely Mint Velvet bag for £7 and a set of beautiful and unusual heavy wine glasses for £2. My son is always finding bargains too. He collects the Bruder range of scale vehicles and has found a couple for £2 each, they would have cost over £100 new so he was delighted!

LaBellina · 22/12/2022 13:29

Bruno Magli new looking bag for £8
Zadig & Voltaire jumper for £4
Reiss dress for £4
Italian wool coat for £8

I’m seething with jealousy here 😱😍

SommerTen · 22/12/2022 15:25

Just bought a not worn white sequin deep v neck fluffy Tu jumper at a charity shop that is ideal for me for Christmas Day in a size 14.

The red & white fairisle Christmas jumper I'm currently wearing came from a charity shop too but with no labels & not worn.

I find it difficult to get nice items in size 14 - 16 in the local charity shops.

I always get good books, including vintage & antique books; plus some ceramics including 2 vintage Lomonsov tiger cubs for £6.99 each!!
Also bought a Swarovski crystal figurine for £10 complete with certificate & box yesterday.

SommerTen · 22/12/2022 15:29

Ps I know Tu is just Sainsbury but it was cheap & new & just what I wanted!

Supersimkin2 · 22/12/2022 17:25

That’s the key isn’t it - buying what you need for a snip. So much the better if it’s a designer gem.

I’ve stopped buying things cos they were insane bargains that I might just use. One never does.

In terms of donating, I do direct giving now - to clothes banks and community orgs - never to charity shops, not these days.

Charity shops spend most of the money on ‘admin’ and not enough on a good cause. Not remotely enough.

Despite endless council discounts, free stock and free workforce, most charity shops price their goods too high to benefit their local community.

Direct giving fulfills a need on the spot. No corporate entitlement, no waste.

Much nicer feeling when you’ve given, most gratifying.

Wow, I was going to post my cashmere Max Mara full length coat that cost £25, but your is even more bargainous! Mine was barely worn, still had the pockets stitched and I think will be my best bargain of all time.

Also this year:
Me and Em joggers £6
Barbour waxed jacket £19.99
Sandro T-shirt £3
Zadig and Voltaire T-shirt £4
Various Cos and Mint Velvet tops under a fiver.

There are never, ever decent shoes in mine. Never 😥

FancyFran · 22/12/2022 18:51

@SlippinKimmy max mara coats if pure cashmere are £2000 now. I bought mine new but in the sale. I shall go out in it to bye bye baby!

This is my absolute dream buy. I even went for a weekend in Wales and hoped one would pop up. The colours are great too.

Amazed at all the Max Mara coats. They're so lovely and somehow even nicer when we get them for a snip. There's so many bargains around. With the exception of underwear, I rarely buy new clothing now.

Although it's not S@B, I bought the Duresta Trafalgar sofa im sat on for £50 from a local furniture charity shop. Today's rummaging produced a Barbour coat for my dog. I'm addicted to Charity shops!
