My 3 year old has ringlets for hair..Help!

I dont know how to ensure her hair is kept in good condition. She has proper "Irish dancing" style ringlets. I have to fully spray it down with a conditioning spray every day as every morning it is very fuzzy from her sleeping on it. When its wet it is halfway down her back but when dry it sits at the nape of her neck so its very springy.

What products should I be using on it? I try only wash once a week but only use regular shampoo and conditioner and then the Johnson's conditioning spray daily.

The Child’s Farm and cheap Alberto Balsam shampoo and conditioner work well on my child’s ringlets.
We wash once a week too.
Then everyday comb with a wide toothed comb and loads of the Child’s Farm detangler (or some conditioner and water in a bottle if run out). Then we scrunch.
Sounds like you are already doing most of that.

My little coco from boots is brill for this type of hair! Once you get to know your daughters curl pattern, you will know what type of products to use,a little spray of detangler and a wide tooth comb in the morning to neaten her hair up for the day leave in conditioner is a must as well as! I've four children with all different curl patterns platting her hair up for bed to will make things easier to!
Such a lovely hair colour and curls 😍

She’s so young so I wouldn’t be going mad with products. I’d go for the no poo method and use conditioner only. Let her hair air dry and use a bonnet at night.

PenanceAdair · 19/12/2022 10:40

I don't see anything wrong with it, even in frizz mode - beautiful hair and colour.

You've already gotten loads of helpful advice, so I have nothing more to add.

My son has similar hair. I wash with conditioner usually cantu or similar, then do a leave in conditioner. Max once a week, sometimes less. I use the pink bottle African pride derangle spray and just run my hands through between washes. I also use the Bread oil. He has sensory needs so I cut it myself or in summer let it get long enough for a man bun.

Her hair is absolutely gorgeous.
I have very curly, fine hair and many products are too heavy. Only Curls is gentle and works well for me, and they're bringing out a children's range early next year so it might be worth having a look at their website.

Also, OP, when you comb/detangle your DD's hair, start from the tip first, moving to the root, taking little sections at a time.

It's counter-intuitive if you've got European/Caucasian hair yourself, but it will work well on your DD's hair, and should hopefully mean washing and combing her hair is not a painful experience for her.

Beautiful hair!

My DD had similar hair at that age. I used a tangle brush and squirted her hair with Avon kids leave in conditioner, which she loved (it smells amazing).

my hair up until I was 3-4 was flaxen blonde curls.

Then it darkened and became wavy straight as I got older. My DM only ever used Johnson’s baby shampoo on me as no curly girl method then. Funnily when I got to 14 and had a bubble perm the hairdressers were all saying how natural it looked.

I always hated having it brushed but wide toothed comb and CG method sounds good for your DD.

Beautiful hair.

I am in my 30s now. Still learning about the curls. So don’t panic you won’t get there overnight!

What I have learnt is that when we think curly hair is ‘dry’. It’s a hell of a lot more complicated that that. In all likelihood it’s probably a porosity issue rather than a dryness issue.

This is where things get complicated as a lot of the curly hair methods are for high porosity hair. Leave in conditioners and cowashing for example can do more damage than good for some curls. Especially on this kind of very fine and light ‘white person curl’.

Dry is more likely to actually be protein / moisture imbalance - or for my hair anyway it’s always the problem. And getting it correct is a flipping NIGHTMARE. I still haven’t figured it out tbh. I make a guess each wash whether it’s protein or moisture I need and I would say I only get it correct half the time.

You can tell it’s low porosity if it takes a while to wet strands properly in a shower or bath. You need to use heat/steam or emollients (glycerin or honey) to try to break into the strands. And when she’s older figure out the protein/moisture palava.

For now I would just wash and condition her hair with very gentle things. It is baby hair after all. And research protective styles. I wear plaits or french braids 90% of the time. Allows me to wash the night before, sleep on it and have ok hair for the next day rather than walk around wet all the time. And I use Moroccan oil light after a wash and use heat to help it penetrate which really helps my hair. It does contain additives some curlies consider nasty and detrimental but with low porosity the traditional curly rule book gets thrown out the window and you do need some of these additives.

Goodluck.

My nearly 6 year old has similar. We wash her hair and use a conditioning mask followed by conditioner every other wash and alternate with a leave in conditioner. It is absolutely gorgeous and I am incredibly jealous 😍

loveisanopensore · 19/12/2022 13:54

My daughter has similar hair. If I use conditioning spray every day it gets frizzy. In the morning I just spray water on it to detangle and comb.
The hair is washed twice a week with Shea Moisture shampoo and conditioner. After that I put in a few drops of Hask Argon oil to put some moisture.

Blizy · 19/12/2022 13:54

My dd's hair is identical! I follow the curly girl method and buy products from soaps for little suds.

MrsCarson · 19/12/2022 14:08

I'd say cut the shampoo down to a couple of times a month or even less, wash with plain water and condition only, comb through with wide comb only with conditioner in it, never when dry. You can get a silky pillowcase or a Silk bonnet to save it frizzing up overnight.

MotherWol · 19/12/2022 15:54

My daughter has similar hair, we use Aussie moist shampoo weekly, after swimming, then Umberto Gianni curl jelly and gently scrunch dry. Definitely a tangle teaser brush and finger combing it out. Your daughter has lovely hair!

Vermin · 19/12/2022 15:56

Never brush it! Cantu brand shampoo and conditioner

you can get satin lined hats on Etsy which are brilliant instead of a woolly hat
