Eyebrows - help, what to do?

Thighdentitycrisis · 19/12/2022 03:20

I’m mid fifties but always got away with a natural look. As a result I’m a complete novice at beauty treatments and only ever worn minimal makeup
I’ve never done anything with my eyebrows. Now I’m older I still want to wear very little makeup but would to look a bit more groomed.
Would fixing my eyebrows work?
what could be done for them ? I don’t even know what they need, to me they look all in the centre and the outer bits are very sparse
(shape wise, colour, maintenance?)

Eye brows make such a difference.
Ive had powder brows- they sort of tattoo them on but it's a very soft effect not the strong dark micro blading effect. It costs about £300, and may need topping up eventually but it's given me a lovely shape with which I touch up with a bit of pencil

i see some straggly and stray hairs that need pulling or trimming so for starters getting them shaped.
they do look sparce and possibly dying them might help (that would be the least intrusive next step).

Thighdentitycrisis · 19/12/2022 11:39

Thanks for the tips @Celeste777 , but I would never pay £300 for a cosmetic enhancement- my very minimal look has made me used to spending very minimally too!

Maybe I just have to accept I have no eyebrows ☹️

Do you have a local salon you could visit for a consultation? I'm thinking a shape and tint which should be around £30 depending on where you are, the tint will wear off and stray ones will grow back but you'll get an idea if you like it.

Otherwise try going to a make up counter for their advice, benefit, Bobbi Brown, spacenk etc are all good for brows.

crispinglovershighkick · 19/12/2022 14:21

Do you know if your thyroid levels are ok? My brows got thin and short and didn't recover until my meds were sorted.

pizzazze · 19/12/2022 20:27

My mum has a similar issue and uses Charlotte tilbury legendary brows which adds a little colour and density to each hair. It's very natural. Get the dark brown rather than the blonde honestly, the blonde will look unnatural.

A shape and tint at a salon wouldn't go amiss either.

Cakeandslippers · 19/12/2022 20:45

I don't do much beauty wise and wear very little make up but I do keep up with my brows as I think it makes a big difference.

I used to get them waxed and tinted regularly then sort of colour in over them with a brow pencil to keep the colour up as my brows are a bit sparse. I recently started doing them myself- once you have the shape right from a pro it's easy enough to wax yourself (easier than i thought) and the tint is super easy and so much cheaper.

Eyebrows make a massive difference to your overall appearance, imo. The PP's brows are stunning! I've had mine microbladed and it was £140 - doesn't look harsh or fake. I know you don't want to spend lots but good brows go a long way. Now that I've had mine done I'll go out with zero makeup, which I would never have done before

Afterfire · 19/12/2022 20:50

You don’t need to spend much. Get a Rimmel eyebrow pencil from Amazon (about £3/4 on there) they give a really natural finish and they have a very good brush on the end. Remove straggly hairs with tweezers then brush with the brush on the end of the pencil into a good soft arch / shape. You can watch you tube videos to get ideas for shaping. Then use the pencil to fill in any bare areas or use more to give more definition and then use the brush again to make the whole thing more natural looking.

Thats what I do anyway. (Ex make up consultant for Clinique and Chanel if that makes any difference)!

EwwSprouts · 19/12/2022 20:53

Also mid 50s. I would pluck the stragglers underneath to have a more clearly defined brow and I use this which costs £5. It has a great little brush and lasts 24 hours. Not as harsh a black.
eyebrow brown gel

NancyJoan · 19/12/2022 20:58

Go to a salon to have them tinted and shaped, then a beauty counter to buy either a pencil, or a tinted gel/powder to add definition. If you have a Morphe store near you, they do lots of brow products at a reasonable price, and the shop floor staff are all make-up artists as well as sales people.

Personally, I’m all in favour of cosmetic enhancement, and would spend the £300.

Toomuchleopard · 19/12/2022 23:08

I use this OP www.boots.com/maybelline-express-brow-duo-eyebrow-filling-natural-looking-2-in-1-pencil-pen-plus-filling-powder-10301738

It would be worth trying a few products out and see what you think before paying for salon treatments.

Beyondshit · 19/12/2022 23:13

I think you need pencil op. Gel only clings to hair that's there and you don't have much. Go to some make up shops/department stores and ask them to help you - get them to do one brow and you do the other. Then choose the most effective and easy to apply product. It takes practise though!

MintChocCornetto · 19/12/2022 23:44

I'd try a tint first - you can either do it at home with the eyelure kit (leave it on for at least 20 min) or go to a salon. And get them shaped as well. Could get lashes tinted also while you're there.

In terms of makeup I've tried all sorts on my brows but mine are thicker so gel works fine for me. Some good ideas from PP, I might go and get mine done professionally!

Marmitepot · 19/12/2022 23:46

My friend is a therapist who does something called HD brows. She is a miracle worker and can make the sparsest of brows look incredible.

Lots of beauty salons do this treatment. I think it’s tinting/shaping and possibly lamination, worth a look for you I think.

Yellowcakestand · 19/12/2022 23:50

I have mine tattooed. They were almost non existent before. Its well worth the money! Makes a massive difference

Bibbetybobbity · 19/12/2022 23:54

Definitely tint and just do it at home. I have zero idea why I ever paid for it done in a salon, it’s a complete doddle. Makes a big difference too.

I want a completely natural look too and these made a big difference adding a bit of structure to my face without looking artificial.

Both my recommendations are cheap! First of all I would try the Ordinary Brow and lash serum - I'm in my 60s and over plucked when I was young and this has really made a difference:

www.johnlewis.com/the-ordinary-multi-peptide-lash-brow-serum-5ml/p6259165?size=5ml&s_ppc=5dx92700074071294729_mixed_fashion_BAU&tmad=c&tmcampid=2&gclid=aea581c4a318111e3b32e264595f7e7f&gclsrc=3p.ds&msclkid=aea581c4a318111e3b32e264595f7e7f

I would also try Elf brow pencil on offer at the moment at just £4.00:
www.elfcosmetics.co.uk/ultra-precise-brow-pencil/200156.html?dwvar_200156_color=Neutral%20Brown&cgid=eyes-eyebrows#start=11&sz=24

If you don't like the Elf eye pencil a soft khol pencil would be good also, or a brow powder you apply with an angled brush.

TinaYouFatLard · 20/12/2022 00:35

IMO good brows make the singular biggest difference to your appearance. I look and feel cleaner when they’re freshly done. Just a decent wax and tint and see how you feel.

fallfallfall · 20/12/2022 01:25

@pedanticromantic excellent idea on the serum. I could use a little help myself. I’ve been debating a tint for a while.

Dangermouse80 · 20/12/2022 02:43

Worth trying out a set of plastic eyebrow stencils. That way you can experiment with different shapes. Using a soft brown eyeshadow works well for a natural effect and is less harsh than a pencil.

WhatTheHellIsAQuasar · 20/12/2022 03:13

I have spent many hours looking for a really good, natural looking micro bladed brows and I haven’t found someone I’m willing to let
loose on mine. It’s a shame but my brows are weird.

I went to a discount beauty store and bought
everything to try out. My favourite thing is the eyelure brow amplifier, alongside a clear mascara (£2, collection 2000 in Superdrug) to fix them in place.

minipie · 20/12/2022 03:34

I have similar brows naturally OP and I do have low thyroid so would agree with getting that tested just in case.

I don’t think you should go for tattooing of any sort if you like a very natural look, IMO it works best if you tend to wear other make up, otherwise it will stand out and look odd.

I agree with serum and a pencil. I have used RapidBrow previously and it does work although I found the effects didn’t last long once I stopped using it. I use the NYX micro brow pencil (from Boots) which I really like as you can draw subtle marks that just give a suggestion of eyebrow hairs. Taupe is a good subtle colour, avoid anything too blonde or brown. Revolution (Superdrug) do one that is similar, cheaper but doesn’t last as long iirc.

minipie · 20/12/2022 03:35

Oh and yes tweezing the stragglers would be good but maybe get the pencil first, see what shape you want to make and then work out which are stragglers.
