Feeling down with clothes at home - look like a trampoline in fleece pjs and fleece dressing gowns as too cold in house

Our house is so cold that I’m having to wear fleece PJs and dressing gowns as soon as I get home. It’s really getting me down. The smart meter is averaging £10 a day with heating on for just 3 hours a day - we don’t have a thermostat so I don’t know the room temperature but our hot water pipes have frozen this morning.
Anyway, I keep seeing women in Instagram and YouTube lounging at home in silk jumpsuits and lounge wear two pieces - but it’s just too cold! I look like the Michelin man! I don’t think my DH as seen me properly dressed for weeks. It’s starting to affect my mood/morale. Anyone else? Or is everyone just having the heating on all day? Dread to think what the monthly bill would be -£600 a month just isn’t viable.

Tramp! Not trampoline !

Why are you looking at women in silk on Instagram?! That’s just gonna make you feel bad.

Real women wear fleece 💪

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 14/12/2022 10:38

Nothing wrong with looking like a trampoline.

They are fun, safe, bouncy and remind you of warmer days.

I’m also mostly in pyjamas. It’s fine.

SavouryFlavour · 14/12/2022 10:39

I'm wearing an Oodie and, as I have a hair mask on under a shower cap under a bobble hat, a bobble hat too.

I look almost exactly like Pootle Flump. (Ask your nan.)

hairyunicorn · 14/12/2022 10:41

Same, Oodie on as soon as I get home to keep warm, looking like a trampoline also :)

JMAngel1 · 14/12/2022 10:43

Ok so there’s solidarity in fleece. Is no one else feeling down about it though? I feel like I can’t answer the door. Xmas is next week and neighbours/friends sometimes pop by - I would be mortified if they saw me like this. We also have PIL coming next week so will have to suck up the heating costs when they’re here as they would be horrified at the cold / they live in the country and have a range and log burner so their house is always toasty.

I am determined to wear something nice on Xmas Day!!

I've just answered the door to our new neighnour in my Oodie. the look on his face was priceless

Adventadventures · 14/12/2022 10:46

At least it sounds like you wear normal clothes during the day I work from home and live in thermal leggings , Ugg boots and an Oodie! Unless I am exercising in which case I lose a few layers and switch the leggings for Lycra. I have no concept of buttons and zips now!
My advise stop watching Insta and start planning the lovely holiday you might be able to afford by wearing all those layers and not putting on the heating

Giggorata · 14/12/2022 11:02

Another Michelin woman here, with added scarf and fingerless gloves - indoors.

I passed the embarrassed to answer the door barrier a few weeks ago.
I'm just shameless now. And warm.

MistletoeandBaileys · 14/12/2022 11:10

Yes!! Fleece all day every day! Although I have the added extra of being pregnant and none of my usual cute things fit anymore. I desperately need to buy some new clothes but with what money!

Saw a lovely soft wool knitted co-it’d set on I think River Island but I’m waiting to see if it goes down in the sales!

SavouryFlavour · 14/12/2022 11:15

I'm embracing it. Last night I sat watching tv on the sofa with DH and DD, all of in Oodies with a fleece blanket over our knees and the dog stretched across the three of us. It felt like a single evolutionary step away from huddling under skins in a cave.

But with a television, rather than thrilling cave paintings of a mammoth hunt, obvs.

ShaunaTheSheep · 14/12/2022 11:19

Fleece lined leggings are good - the fleece is hidden!

AgainWithTheDadJokes · 14/12/2022 11:20

^Instagram isn't real, we all know that.
Even the Kardashians - a contemporary standard for beauty - pose and photoshop their photos like crazy. ^

Those women in their silk pyjamas? They've got thermals on underneath.
Or they are saying Pete, take the photo really quick, I'm freezing.
^
Instagram isn't real. Everyone is wearing warm pyjamas, onesies, or fleece-wear. ^

I'm sure you look beautiful in your pyjamas and dressing gown.

Squamata · 14/12/2022 11:30

I'd feel a bit yicky to wear pyjamas all day tbh, to me they're for bed and not lounging but I know I'm in a minority on that! I also think because PJs tend to be loose, you lose heat from the legs, necks and sleeves so you're better with something a bit closer fitting.

Underwear is your secret weapon. I sometimes wfh in dress with vest (still wearing maternity ones and youngest DC is nearly 4, arf) old fashioned slip petticoat thing, thick tights, jumper, scarf round neck and blanket over my lap. If you can go for slightly less beddish textures so scarf can be a silky type one rather than woolly - still keeps you warm but feels a bit less clunky. Lots of thin layers rather than one or two big thick ones that make you feel like the Michelin man.

The Japanese wear these bands a bit like pregnancy belly bands round their tums as well to keep the kidneys/builders bum area warm, might make myself some on one of these days! Google haramaki, could prob make one out of old jumper or top.

Thick socks (or two layers) and slippers. Put your feet up on something when you're working.

iwannascream · 14/12/2022 11:32

I'm sat a work in an office, 5 heaters on (but unless you are sitting on top of them you don't feel the heat).

I am currently wearing, 2 pairs of socks, thick tights, jeans, warm boots with fur lining, a teeshirt, 2 jumpers, a fur snood scarf thing and fingerless gloves with a blanket over my legs under my desk.

I am still freezing and the office thermometer is still only showing 14 degrees.

I am giving the michelin man a run for his money and I don't care what the clients think I hate being cold.

Can't wait to get home to my fleece pyjamas and oodie hoody thingy to actually feel warm.

SongforWhoever · 14/12/2022 11:45

I don't wear PJs or dressing gown during the day. I don't find them warm enough.
I wear thermal vest with long sleeved top, thick sweater and thick cardigan and thermal leggings, trousers and thermal socks with shoes, as well as a hat when needed. When sitting I have the heated throw over me. I went to visit a friend yesterday dressed like this. I must look as if I have put on a few stone in weight.

lindyloo57 · 14/12/2022 13:11

I answered the door with my dressing gown on in the afternoon, my neighbour looked at me as if to say are you off to bed, it's ok I said, I have my clothes on underneath I'm trying to not put the heating on. Today I have on two pairs of thermal leggings, thermal socks thermal top a cashmere jumper and a sweatshirt zip top , and I'm still cold, I hate the winter.

OhPeggySue · 14/12/2022 13:25

No one cares. Pretty much everyone is swaddled under layers of warm clothes. Front it out and be shameless!! Delivery drivers must see every variety of PJ/dressing gown/oodie/face mask/bobble hat combo that exists. They don't give a shit snd if neighbours see you, well, they'll think you're barking mad and give you a wide berth, so....result!!

YukoandHiro · 14/12/2022 14:38

We are having to suck up the heating costs because our two kids are both sick. I don't have a smart meter thankfully so just burying my head in the sand about it at the moment 😬

Yeah I wfh and look an absolute state at the moment. I hate it too. It's compounded by the fact that I've never restored my previous poise since having kids 5 years ago.

I can't wait to look in the mirror and feel put together again. God knows how many years that will be.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 14/12/2022 14:45

I understand OP! I’m unemployed at the moment. The house is bloody freezing. I end up wearing running leggings and then thrown some trackies over the top. The ones I have are from hush so they are absolutely huge (I find hush massive for the size 🤷‍♀️) then a t shirt, a sweatshirt and my dressing gown. I feel huge and grumpy and miserable. I’m a stone heavier than I want to be and I’m just avoiding mirrors completely.

Hopefully it will get a bit milder next week, I cannot cope with these minus temps much longer.

MintJulia · 15/12/2022 00:04

Well, stop looking at Instagram for a start ! What a futile thing to do.

I wfh with the heating off, and on video calls a lot. I'm getting good at a work look that allows me to wear a ski base layer underneath office clothes.

Or TUI do a good range of long sleeved thermal t shirts in pastel colours that are thin, smooth yet very warm. You could try those.

EL0ISE · 15/12/2022 00:15

I wear merino underwear ( leggings and Long sleeve top ) underneath a fleece and lined trousers, with a down gilet and merino cardigan on top. I look just like a normal person only slightly fatter. No delivery person has recoiled when I open the door so I must pass as human.

Wiennetta · 15/12/2022 07:28

Layers are the best thing.

I work from home and at the moment wear thermal leggings and long sleeve top as a base layer, then on top I’m wearing thick/chunky oversized jumpers and either jeans or thicker leggings (leather look or cord effect ones).

While I’m sitting at my desk I put a blanket on my knees and if I get really cold I’ll make a hot drink and hot water bottle.

I look completely fine for Teams calls and just put on a coat when I go out to walk the dog/pop to the shops etc. And it comfy wearing leggings and jumpers.

Its been -6 the last couple of days during the day where I am!

talomon · 15/12/2022 09:58

Maybe the reason you are feeling bad is wearing pyjamas and dressing gown during the day? Can't you wear a few layers of warm day clothes? I wear a thin merino base layer, then a thin fleece jacket and a thicker polartec fleece on top. And fleece lined outdoor trousers.
