Do/Would you wear an outfit that doesn't 'suit' you?

I keep seeing lovely cosy jumper with dressy skirt outfits. I'd love to wear something like that. But I am very short and size 18 . I know it's not going to look good. The proportions are difficult to get right at my height & weight.
I'm conscious of my lower stomach so prefer a long top which I know won't work with a longish skirt. I have no discernable waist.
But I've had a really awful year and I'd love to treat myself.
Should I just order a few things and give it a try or am I setting myself up for disappointment?

I think you should try different things on and decide what looks best. Your body is unique and will not suit clothes that look good on someone else. Fashion has a lot to answer for if you are imperfect (as most of us are)

What have you got to lose by trying a few garments on?

EwwSprouts · 13/12/2022 22:08

I would just avoid a clingy skirt and maybe add a belt to give you a waist. Is this what you mean? I like the bold colours.

Find something you like. No one feels good in something they know doesn’t suit their body shape. You won’t wear it and it will be a waste of money.
I liked the look of those long floaty dresses with leather jackets a while back. I would look daft in anything big and floaty as it would swamp me.

70sDuvet · 13/12/2022 22:10

It might actually look quite good on you.
My mum is a size 18 (she's a 14 in her head) apple shape, and 5'5" and my sister is the same size but 5'2". I have a dress that looks like a long sweatshirt attached to a pleated skirt that they both like.
In the summer I got them to try on similar outfits but made up of actual pleated skirts and long lighterweight sweatshirts and they both looked really good.
Because they could each pick out a skirt that was an ideal length, pattern size and weight and then a jumper that was also exactly right for them it was easier than a dress and could skim over any areas they didn't like.
It did (on them) look best with a patterned skirt and plain Jersey sweatshirt type top than a woolen jumper.
But give it a go, you don't know if it does or doesn't suit you until you try it out.

No, I put something suiting me ahead of it being fashionable. I guess what I think looks good may not be what others think looks good, but I would never wear something I thought made me look bad.

I am really not that interested in what the industry thinks I should wear.

EwwSprouts · 13/12/2022 22:12

Meant to add scroll down to 5 the pleated skirt

Queenmargery · 13/12/2022 22:15

this maybe

I don't think I have anything to lose as such but would need to shop online so a bit of hassle involved if I have to return lots.
Also like I said I've had a really awful year so could do without too much of a blow to my ego I suppose.

Thanks. Unfortunately the link doesn't work.

That looks so nice- just give it a go - you can always return it if it's a disaster, but it gets boring to feel stuck in a rut. And if you feel like wearing something nice, why not just do it.

And don't be too critical when you try it on, it doesn't need to look perfect- just good enough or fine should do

Queenmargery · 13/12/2022 22:15

Absolutely worth a try!

JaneJeffer · 13/12/2022 22:22

Are there any nearby shops where you can try something similar and then order the one you linked if it looks good?

mincepiepie · 13/12/2022 22:25

I'm a size 18 and live in jumpers and skirts. I hate my stomach.

The trick is to get a voluminous pleated elasticised waist skirt and wear it high up the tuck the top in.

You might need to try a few skirt styles so don't be disheartened if the first one doesn't look right.

I have a velvet skirt and a merino jumper. And a leopard mini skirt and a lack polo neck too.

I'm an pear /hourglass shape I do think it helps to have a rough idea of your shape.

Tangelo · 13/12/2022 22:58

Wear the stuff you love! I thought we’d got past the idea that you should prioritise flattering over everything else. Wear the colour, the texture, the shapes that make you glad to get dressed in the morning.
Also, as a fairly short, round person, I like the jumper and pleated skirt combo. I like a more midaxi length skirt, and either tuck a jumper or quite often wear a relatively cropped sweatshirt. Doesn’t sound like it should work, but the proportions are good for me.

Floisme · 13/12/2022 23:17

I would and I do! I'm sufficiently vain not to want to wear anything that makes me look an absolute fright, but if it's just a bit meh on me but I'm still drawn to it cos of the shape or the colour or whatever then yes, I'll wear it. I think we worry about all these rules far too much. I would have a go - if you don't, you'll never know.

KaleToChristmas · 13/12/2022 23:20

I don't do this but my sister does and I admire her for it. She doesn't look good (imo anyway, which I don't offer up), but enjoys what she wears and doesn't seem to give a damn. I care a lot about whether I look fat etc. and limit what I wear because of it. She probably has more fun.

EwwSprouts · 14/12/2022 08:50

@Queenmargery Weird I just clicked it and went straight through. Anyway the text says
If you want to make a statement with this outfit idea, choose a metallic pleated skirt. You can even style for sweater season with a cozy knitted top or cardigan. Try a monochromatic color scheme for maximum appeal.
The colours are teal v neck soft jumper and dark aqua skirt, to mid calf.

ReluctantLondoners · 14/12/2022 08:52

I've seen this look on so many different body types. I definitely don't think you have to be tall and willowy to wear this.

Maybe go for a less chunky knit though?
