My niece's 18th birthday is coming up and I would like to buy her a piece of gold jewellery. I would be happy to spend up to £500 and am looking for something a bit special. Any suggestions of good brands to look at?

Do you want something that will appreciate in value and become a potential heirloom? Or do you want fashionable but mass produce or something personal and unique?
If you want the first option, look at vintage jewellery, jewellery from the 50s and 60s is likely to become more popular, and at the moment tends to go for scrap value (unless it's by a famous designer).
If you want more fashionable then Tiffany remains very popular.
If you want something personal then go to a local independent jewellers, most indes have gold/silversmith who will take on commissions.
If your niece has a special interest / hobby then you could commission something which represents that. Or a locket that has her birthstone mounted on it. Etc

I mostly buy vintage however I do like Daniella Draper for new, substantial feeling jewellery. Lucky niece!

I’d love to take my niece shopping together so she can choose her own piece.
Lunch & gossip, precursor to shopping. Perfect.

How about something from www.louisewade.com like
www.louisewade.com/products/schiaparelli-necklace?variant=44121833160 or www.louisewade.com/products/rope-t-bar-necklace?variant=39287216767018

Don’t end up spending hundreds on gold
vermeil jewellery though. It’s just gold plating.

dontgobaconmyheart · 13/12/2022 03:35

For that amount I would want her to choose, I think. It's very generous OP (not a criticism, I think it's lovely) and jewellery is so dependent on taste and fashion - especially when you are 18.

Taking her to choose something would be lovely.

I love (yellow) gold jewellery and discovered a brand called Monika Vinader which have simple modern designs. I'm also happy with the quality of it.

Mouthfulofquiz · 13/12/2022 11:03

Monika Vinader is all sterling silver or gold vermeil isn’t it? I don’t think she does solid gold. Some of the sterling silver bracelets are stunning though.

haribonoyoudont · 13/12/2022 11:34

Alighieri has beautiful pieces which will age well (www.alighieri.com/); agree with others though, with that budget you should probably involve her in the purchase.

pensionconfusion · 13/12/2022 11:38

For that price I would maybe get together with her and design something special together. Lots of small jewellery designers out there that would make something special and memorable. Remember to get them to hallmark it.

I got some jewellery made for me for my 18th. I still wear both pieces but not very often as I tend to wear silver (or platinum) jewellery and have more of it and thus more choice. My family were insistent though that for a big birthday I got gold....
My pieces are a very simple hammered gold bangle and a pair of opal studs with a rubbed setting.

I like simple jewellery and these items have really stood the test of time (I'm now mid 40s). I could probably do with a gold necklace too. I do keep half an eye out for something that appeals but haven't seen anything I had to buy yet.

CointreauVersial · 13/12/2022 13:14

Try Carrie Elizabeth. She does some solid gold items, and it's all gorgeous and contemporary, with good semi-precious gemstones.

Anonmousse · 13/12/2022 13:21

An indie jeweller or goldsmith could probably make something small within that budget.(but possibly not before Christmas!) If she likes silver coloured metal rather than gold then platinum would be a better choice than white gold which is ridiculously expensive at the moment.

LaBrujaPiruja · 13/12/2022 13:31

Are you sure she will like yellow gold?

KandtheQueens · 13/12/2022 17:53

Hi all, thank you for the suggestions, I'll get to Googling! In answer to a few queries, my niece loves yellow gold and wears it all the time, so gold is definitely the plan. I would like solid gold for that price and might have a look at some local jewellers as well. Her birthday is in the new year so I could take advantage of the Christmas sales too.

The one I shared does most of her designs in solid gold... louisewade.com .. she has quite a few different collections
