Dressing the menopausal waistline

My waist has pretty much disappeared since menopause. I’d like to tuck shirts in, wear shortish sweaters etc, but doing that seems to make things look worse. Or maybe I’m just more conscious of it. Any tips welcome.

Ive noticed mens t shirts seem to skim over my menopausal belly whereas womens t shirts accentuate it by going in at the waist. Mens are often cheaper as well and dont have Disney characters or patronising "Be Kind" messages on them.

I've never had a defined waist and I like the controversial French tuck (just tuck a little bit in at the front) gives me a bit of a waist illusion.

Falalalalaaah · 08/12/2022 22:35

I'm pretty rectangular and I do think tucking works. I tend to size up in bottoms though as I definitely find that helps. Nothing worse than figure hugging skirt and tucked in top on me! If skinnies ever come back, I'll be in long tunics 😅.

It’s a bugger isn’t it. I had a very slim waist until late forties then the three pregnancies and menopause caught up with me. I tend to still tuck shirts in at the front, and high waisted jeans work better for me as they keep it contained.

I have this issue too. Combined with a whole wardrobe of lovely clothes that show off the nice slim waist that is now no more. I'm not sure what the answer is. I think I need to completely change the way I dress.

ClaudiusTheGod · 08/12/2022 23:19

Yes @eurochick I have also thought of changing my entire way of dressing, but I don’t know what that would look like. Floor-length kaftans?!

Exciting - finally my special subject on s&b. I never have had a waistline and menopause (now 50s) made that even worse…
so what has worked for me is …I always wear tops which go to top of hip length so that is where eye is drawn- Even with jersey fabrics this works well especially if bottoms ( trousers) are dark colours too I never tuck in shirts - again go to hips and look for ones with smart hems
and recently when waist has been ahem larger post pandemic I have found layering a cheap next spaghetti top (goes to hip) in same colour as a top which goes to waist has meant more tops look hood
and aim for well cut and fitting and not loose kaftans 😊 - super loose makes me look like a hippo.
Hope that helps a bit - probably easier for me because although menopause not fab at least in my waist it wasn’t a big new loss..😂

Good - not hood …
hoodies also make me look hippo like ..

My waist used to be my body’s best feature and I’m still coming to terms with its disappearance. I agree with PPs in that both the French tuck helps a bit, as does a top that reaches just below the waist or to my hip.
