Have a new relative to buy for. I would say style is indie, band, slightly emo, not quite goth. Would any of these work do you think?

I don't really like any of them that much.

Regardless, I would avoid buying clothes for someone - even if you know them very well and have the best intentions, it's so easy to get it wrong and ends up being a waste of money or an awkward chat.

anythinginapinch · 08/12/2022 21:14

First one. My DD is similar to your description and would like that I think rushes off to buy it

LuciferRising · 08/12/2022 21:27

Seen her in Vans, Adidas, Guns and Roses, black goth tops, checked shirts, Hoodies. No idea what to buy otherwise!

It's a nice shirts and both DD 11 and I would wear it.

My DD is a bit older now so I may be out of touch. If you want to buy clothes, perhaps try Urban Outfitters, they have loads of graphic tees etc. Is there a local independent place you could try? There’s one near us that is really popular, does limited edition tee shirts etc.

Onedayatatime22 · 08/12/2022 21:33

To be honest if you and your 11 year old would wear it, I doubt she would...

Clothing it risky for that age group, I think. It sounds like she has her own style. How about a voucher for Urban Outfitters/ Berschka/ H&M or for somewhere where she can buy her own make up?

Hard agree with this first point.

However, I hate to seem like a misery guts on this thread, but depending on what you know about her shopping even a voucher for these shops is risky. A lot of young people are strongly into slow fashion - buying very infrequently, buying second-hand, buying from specific stores that meet their specific ethical criteria....

If I'm struggling for something to buy I normally try and go for something consumable. Nice hair mask, good chocolates, bottle of rum, candle... something that will very likely be used.

Well, she's generally a skinny jeans and t shirt, top, hoodie, shirt type person. Not overly out there. And some of the stuff like the 90s grudge style worn in the 90s. Vans and Adidas surely a household staple?

Vouchers are out. £50. Candles too impersonal. Likes nature and animals. Camper van. Down to earth. Did think rucksack.

As a 26 year old, I'm afraid I have to disagree with Vans and Adidas being household staples.

Her style seems very different to mine, but even if it was similar, I would avoid buying clothes.

I agree with PP, vouchers are the way to go. Big department stores such as: John Lewis, Selfridges or M&S are good options because people can choose if they want makeup/clothes/food etc.

Is there anything else she likes? Does she like hot beverages or does she wear jewellery? Perfume maybe? Or bath/skincare?

I’m mid 20s, used to like the emo vibe when I was a teen. I’d wear the 1st one. Definitely not the 2nd. Maybe the 3rd link, depends. I would definitely look at H&M Divided if she’s an alternative skinny jean type.

drkpl · 08/12/2022 22:39

Just read your updates. Maybe a vans hoodie? You can get them at discount prices if you look
