How can I get my glow back ?

chubster101 · 08/12/2022 14:23

I'm 46
My skin looks grey and dull
My hair is getting more grey
My eyes are more lines this year than ever
I plan to dye my hair (never ever done that before!) to cover the grey. But how do I get my complexion back to glowing again and do away with the grey and dull skin/look ?
In the new year I am planning to go gluten free due to diet/health problems, I will be drinking more water and generally living a much more healthy lifestyle, sluggish free.
Any suggestions gratefully received

Hi OP. I would suggest trying to incorporate some yoga into your daily routine and also some gentle facial yoga and massage. Lots of videos on YouTube. Your new healthy eating regime should help too. Maybe a good facial cleanser and hot cloth routine, I like Liz Earle or Emma Hardie products. I also mix a couple of pumps of Glossier Futuredew in with my BB cream which I find helps with a glow.

I like your plan, I think good skin and health comes from the inside out.
A lot of creams are just marketing, but I think an eye cream does help. I like Prai which is often on offer in M&S.

Don't go into radical diet changes unless you have a genuine health need though. I think cutting sugar helps, the problem is glycation which hardens the skin cells.

I love Vitamin C serum in the morning to give me skin a nice glow. Geek and Gorgeous do a nice one that isn't expensive.

I also use tretinoin at night time, which has improved my skin massively, but it's prescription strength and more of a long term investment which only really shows good results over time.
You could try an over the counter retinol to start with.

Also, do you use sunscreen? A good SPF will protect your skin from sun damage.

Vitamin C serum.

Don't dye your hair! I did this and regretted it, it just leads to grey roots and usually harsh colour that doesn't flatter the complexion. I have highlights now to blend the grey in.

Cotswoldmama · 08/12/2022 14:51

I think it's important to eat well and exercise. I always feel better after exercise. I also have a skin care routine that I try to stick to rigidly. I use vitamin c and SPF in the morning under make up and at night I use my skin+me daily doser, which contains Tretinoin, niacinamide and azelaic acid. To make a difference to aging skin you really need a retinol or Tretinoin, which is a strong regional that's only available in the UK on prescription. That's why I use skin+me if you use my trial you can get a months for free just £3.50 p&p

Good point on hair dye @CosmopolitanPlease

I got tired of the full colour as my greys grew in and I went for some highlights for the first time instead. It is letting my grey come in more subtly. I feel better for it and less of a slave to the hair dye.

TreesAtSea · 08/12/2022 17:04

I'd agree with those advising to not go down the hair dyeing route, though I did it myself for 25 yrs. Unless you plan to carry on doing it for the rest of your life, eventually you'll need to deal with growing it out. Suggestion of highlights instead is good, or perhaps just incorporate going grey into a new look for yourself. Great opportunity to reassess your wardrobe, the colours you wear etc. Good luck with whatever you decide.

I’m 45 with good skin. I don’t drink, smoke, have much junk. I do hot yoga 5 times a week, sleep well and drink loads of water. Skin care routine is very simple. I’ve had Botox around my eyes and the difference is incredible but subtle. I think a combination of lifestyle, diet and genetics contribute to good skin.

TillyTheTeddy · 08/12/2022 22:19

Sleep, sleep and more sleep and less stress - admittedly the last is difficult to achieve.

BatCheeseIsFine · 08/12/2022 22:28

Sleep, water and exercise (i have v little time to exercise at the moment and it does make a difference). And I use glycolic overnight peel when I feel like my skin is dull, it really helps. It sounds drastic but it’s not, it’s just a gel that clears dead skin cells (no actual “peeling”) and I have a cheap Superdrug own brand one.

I do dye my hair because I have mainly dark hair with white bits around the front that make it look like I have a receding hairline unless I dye them, so I think it depends on the individual situation and how grey you are. But agree with avoiding anything too harsh or dark.

My skin improved massively within weeks of me cutting out alcohol.

I also take Equi skin supplements which are actually called ‘Glow’.

I’m pretty happy with my skin for the first time in my life - at the ripe age of 48.

Luxurysleuth007 · 08/12/2022 22:34

Book an appointment with a dermatologist or at least invest in Caroline Hirons Skin book, I’d say retinol and probably the inclusion of some glycolic toner to help with the dull skin will help. Double cleanse at night too. It doesn’t have to cost the Earth, look into The Ordinary, La Roche Posay, No7, Inkey List etc. Pixie Glow tonic is fab after cleansing at night, follow up with a hydrating moisturiser.

Eat plenty of fresh vegetables and get that water down your neck like never before. Water will have an immense effect pretty much straight away.

If you drink alcohol often perhaps consider cutting down, same if you smoke or vape, your body slows down being able to compensate for them and it starts to show on our skin.

Invest in a good multivitamin regimen, I find boosting them with extra vit d and c helps too.

Sleep. Make sure you’re getting plenty of it.

Only dye your hair yourself if gettin it done at a salon isn’t an option.

bareMinerals make a tinted moisturiser that is fantastic for glow.

I was wearing the wrong colour for about 2 years and my skin still looked good.
Put on mascara and a tinted lip balm- instant natural colour and a bit of oomph.

I find using a very light coloured cream eyeshadow like this one brightens you up too.

DuncanBiscuits · 09/12/2022 02:46

Erborian CC cream is brilliant, and NARS cream blush in Orgasm.

fallfallfall · 09/12/2022 02:47

Of course it depends on your skin type and it’s condition BUT, Biossance Lactic Acid night cream has been miraculous for me along with Sunday Riley CEO vitamin C in the am.

Busytimes · 09/12/2022 09:39

the best thing i have found is
sunday riley good genes, sunday riley blue oil ( i cant recal name cant afford it now ) and a vit c .
i am older now so use tretinol via which is a long term investment . It is anti aging but does not give glow .. but at the mo thats my priority!

about to be 60 next yeat tho . The good genes is amazing !
