I’m 50 and going out in evening with work, what to wear?

First time ever even though I’ve worked with them for years. They are all older than me and we are a dispersed team. If I go out with friends I tend to wear skinny or coated jeans with high boots and a blazer. A bit passé maybe but it suits me. I don’t however think this will be suitable for the work meal. Any thoughts what else I can wear please?

Sorry but I would wear what you just described maybe with a fancy blouse and a bit of bling.

Risslan · 04/12/2022 23:04

What you described sounds great. Why don't you think it's suitable? What do you usually wear for work?

We're you thinking of something more classic(old!)? Wide leg trousers can look very elegant for a posher evening do, simple top with statement jewellery?

FairyLightTangle · 05/12/2022 08:14

I think what I normally wear is probably a bit too young and dressy! Even though my colleagues are only 5 years plus older than me their styles are completely different. I think I’m just overthinking though

I don’t understand!

I’m older than your colleagues, shop mainly from ‘high end’ brands (with some Zara, etc, thrown in) and expect and intend to look both stylish and fashionable. Is this not the case with the people you work with? Why would you have to pick something demonstrably not young and dressy to go out with them?

If you could indicate the relative formality or otherwise of the meal, and your budget, it would be easier to suggest something.

Wear your coated jeans with a nice blouse.

Floisme · 05/12/2022 10:36

Your outfit sounds fine. I thought at first you were after tips on how to 'glitz' it up a bit. Please don't tell me you're asking for advice on how to 'dress older' Shock

Yes, you are overthinking.

How your colleagues dress or their ages have absolutely no relevance. Just wear what you would usually wear on an evening out.

SequinShagger · 05/12/2022 10:39

Sounds fine

MistyRock · 08/12/2022 14:07

What about a velvet wrap front dress, knee length and 3/4 sleeves. With blazer and high boots?

shinynewapple22 · 08/12/2022 14:50

You don't need to dress the same as your colleagues. And if you have never been out in the evening with them you may be surprised that they have a completely different look when out.

I am (I guess) a similar age to your colleagues (late 50s). I'm off for a meal with my colleagues tomorrow . I shall be wearing a sparkly mini jumper dress with thick tights and chunky boots . That's what I'm comfortable in - I have no idea what my colleagues will be wearing .

lindyloo57 · 08/12/2022 17:36

@shinynewapple22 that jumper dress sounds lovely is it new, I'm looking for one myself, being only 5ft2 I'm finding many jumper dresses too long.

I love jumper dresses. I have a sparkly one from Oasis a few years ago. Before it turned shit by Boo Ho.

Falalalalaaah · 08/12/2022 17:54

I'd go with your usual look. It sounds fine for a work dinner out. Jeans aren't overly dressy so can't see how that's going to be an issue unless everyone is in onesies or joggers!

That said I also love knit dresses. I'm wearing one right now in fact 😁. But if you're indoors you might actually end up a bit too warm

shinynewapple22 · 08/12/2022 23:22

Sorry @lindyloo57 I bought it about 4 years ago - before lockdown anyway .

JaceLancs · 08/12/2022 23:39

I love a sweater dress too - most of mine are phase eight, DKNY, Ralph Lauren or All Saints

MistyRock · 09/12/2022 03:53

And I've recently purchased 2 from Benetton for day wear. They are my favourite things to wear. So easy, just bung on thoughts and a nice pair of boots amd you instantly looked put together.

MistyRock · 09/12/2022 03:53

*tights

dudsville · 09/12/2022 06:31

I agree with posters saying you don't need to dress like the others. Choose something suitable for the location/event and be comfortable in your own style.
