Blackheads

Hello

My daughter is struggling to get rid of blackheads on her nose. She currently uses a cerave face wash and moisturiser. Is there something else we could try? She is 16 and has combination skin

Thank you

If she's got a night out or something she might like to use those pore strips? They don't make a long term difference imo but give a bit of confidence before a night out

Cluckycluck · 04/12/2022 10:33

Are they definitely blackheads or just sebaceous filaments?

Righthandcider · 04/12/2022 10:44

The Ordinary Salicylic masque is very good.

SkincareHelpMe · 04/12/2022 13:05

@Cluckycluck it's an obvious line on her nose so I assume blackheads. Is there a way to tell the difference?

Compare what she has to the photo

🤤🤗

Jollychristmas · 04/12/2022 19:07

@Cluckycluck how do you treat a sebaceous filament?

Zeeza · 04/12/2022 19:09

Yep @Jollychristmas , we want to know. @Cluckycluck you might be about to change my life. I have just discovered I dont have blackheads, but sebaceous filaments

Hotmess1 · 04/12/2022 19:10

I am also 🤤 at those pics!! 😂 would pay good money to have a go at the noses on the left!!

Zeeza · 04/12/2022 19:13

Right??? My elderly neighbour has a massive one on her cheek that I just drool over. I'm obsessed with it.

Cluckycluck · 05/12/2022 03:25

You can't get rid of sebaceous filaments but you can minimise them5

They become noticeable when there is sebum (oil) in them so really the only way to minimise them is just a really good skincare routine. Make sure your skin is hydrated, the temptation is to use harsh products to strip skin of sebum which ends up counterproductive as you'll produce excess sebum which will make them more visible.

Gentle cleanser, moisturiser and use a chemical exfoiliant twice a week. A retinol cream helps too.

fallfallfall · 05/12/2022 03:50

@Cluckycluck i've also found that using the face wash (rubbing it on the face a good massage for 30 seconds or more) helpful. kind of like singing the ABC's while brushing teeth.
previously i would almost rinse it off as quickly as it was applied, not giving it time to work.
@SkincareHelpMe what face wash product or skin products is your daughter using?

SkincareHelpMe · 05/12/2022 07:03

@fallfallfall this cleanser www.boots.com/cerave-blemish-control-face-cleanser-with-2-salicylic-acid-niacinamide-for-blemish-prone-skin-236ml-10297027

And moisturiser www.boots.com/cerave-moisturising-cream-pot-454g-10246704

@Cluckycluck what chemical exfoliant would you recommend?

cerave is a very good product line. i'm sure you two will get this under control soon.
don't wait too long though to see a dermatologist, really that is what specialists are there for. not necessarily at this stage but if her skin deteriorates and it affects her self-confidence. no need for that.

My DH bought some Lumin Charcoal Cleanser which obviously I nicked to try; my sebaceous filaments (which I didn’t even know the name of until this thread) basically disappear after using it.

Wash face with warm not hot water using Neutrogena Oil-Free Acne Wash Pink Grapefruit Foaming Scrub.

Palmers Skin Success Deep Cleansing Astringent.

Neutrogena clear and soothe moisturiser.

Its important to use the moisturiser as the last step.

KangarooKenny · 06/12/2022 06:57

The only thing that gets rid of them on my nose is Clean and Clear blackhead cleanser, and no moisturiser on my nose.
‘Dab it on like a toner and leave it, nothing else goes on the nose.

AnchorWHAT · 06/12/2022 08:55

Paulas choice has a liquid that clears my nose

Cluckycluck · 06/12/2022 15:18

A BHA exfoiliant is best

I like a couple of non budget products.
Paula's Choice BHA
Medik8 Press and Glow
Trinny Find Your Balance

The Inkey List BHA is a good budget option. I believe Revolution one too.

The cleanser and moisturiser you're using are great.

Just make sure to stick to gentle products. If you could get her to start using an SPF daily in her routine that would be great too.
