My 51 year old hair is shit. Please help me fix it

It’s thick, wavy almost curly, totally grey but dyed blonde. Whatever I do with it, it still looks all brittle and dull and frizzy at the front, and curls at the back. It’s shoulder length.

Ive tried any amount of cremes, serums, potions, hot brush, rollers, drying naturally, everything. Is there a REALLY good treatment to stop my fringe looking like bad pubes?

Thanks!

Anyone? Are there any salon treatments that are worth it? Like Botox and filler for the hair?

Sorry I'm no use, but posting so hopefully a hair dresser sees this!

Only thing I can suggest is going to the salon and asking for their advice. Salon products are also meant to be much better.

L'Oreal extraordinary argan oil on damp hair.

WhenYouWalkThroughTheGarden · 01/12/2022 17:43

Olaplex would probably be a good option - depending on the brand/salon, it may go under a different name. But they are repairing and bond-building treatments. I really rate Botanical Repair if you have an Aveda salon near you, but I also like FibrePlex by Schwarzkopf.

stayathomer · 01/12/2022 17:52

my hair which can be frizzy and dehydrated and all in between. A hairdresser once told me the trick was:

  1. same shampoo and conditioner
  2. an oil (they recommended macadamia but I haven’t found it yet!) put into hair 2 or 3 evenings a week, just a little put through to the ends and left in
  3. conditioner left in for half an hour once a week
  4. dry hair naturally for a long while before heat styling and ALWAYS use a heat protector spray
  5. keep hydrated and eat well (he said eggs and oily fish, spinach are great!)

herbal essences (the blue one) or Shea moisture are the only brands that helped me, oh and the new purple L’Oréal one for dehyated hair but still that wasn’t as good as the other two. Olaplex, kerastese, joici and redden did nothing.

hope this helps and best of luck, my hair was in bits for a long time. A caveat though, my hair is brown, I know blond hair may take different care!

Risslan · 01/12/2022 18:00

Philip Kingsley elasticiser is good for damage repair.

Olaplex treatments, or you could try the revolution plex range from boots if on a budget.

Not sure keratin blow drys are still a thing but I once did that when my hair was screwed from heat styling and it made it a lot better for a while.

Eat well, take supplements.

ComfortablyDazed · 01/12/2022 18:02

@stayathomer - what do you mean by ‘same shampoo and conditioner’? Do you mean the same brand?

FlibbertyGibbitt · 01/12/2022 18:39

I have thick wavy / curly hair 3a/2b .

I wash only with conditioner, I leave conditioner in. Mine loves protein, not coconut. I use various products, at the mo I’m using the curl company’s curl cream which is fab.

get a satin pillow case to protect your curls, don’t brush when dry. Lots of stuff on YouTube.

lastly I had bleached highlights about 6 months ago , has ruined the curls so using lots of treatments and had it coloured back now .

good luck!

In my experience, hairdressers don’t give a shit about the hair of women past 50

What’s 3a/2b?

Would you consider embracing the grey? My hair condition increased massively once I stopped dyeing it.

Melroses · 01/12/2022 20:50

It sounds just like mine. The front side sections tend to go frizzy/fluffy no matter what. They are have always been like this and I used to have it shaped around the sides to cut it off as it is only a small section of hair - it just seems to take over. I let it go grey and was going to get highlights before lockdown but now it is mostly grey at the front.

I have been using Herbal Essences Coconut Milk shampoo and conditioner, I leave the conditioner on for about 5 minutes. A few drops of argan oil combed through while it is wet and Umberto Giannini curl cream which was good but I have bought a new tube and it is rubbish and sticky so I need to find a new one.
Dry naturally
It looks good the first day, goes off after that and starts to look good again about day 4 when it really needs washing again. The frizzy sides are a PIA. I wear it up with a soft scrunchie when it is not so good.

The central heating dries it out and makes a mess of it so I resort to straightening when I get fed up of it.

Allsnotwell · 01/12/2022 20:52

First get a shampoo and conditioner with out silicone in
join a curly girl FB page for curly hairdresser recommendations

Dry hair naturally

Use leave in conditioner

Luredbyapomegranate · 01/12/2022 20:58

There is a treatment called hair Botox actually - it’s a conditioning treatment that clings to the hair. Lasts up to six weeks. I have thin, dry, curly hair and I think it did help. Other than that Philip Kingsley elasticiser once a week, plus a second dose of conditioner left on with styling cream (bumble and bumble invisible oil / bumble and bumble styling cream (not the curly one)) is what works best for me.

Nope. Did it for a couple of years and also no-poo but I looked very old and wise.

Defo don’t want to dry naturally. I don’t want my curls. They are only at the back, the front has never curled. I think one of those kerastase/japanese blow dries could be the way forward.

I am 53 with dry, wavy hair. It used to look like a Brillo pad. I guess everyone is different but I found fighting my curls/ waves and adding expensive, silicone containing conditioner just made matters worse . My strategy is basically same as flibbertygibbits and it’s improved things greatly.

BatshitCrazyWoman · 02/12/2022 20:15

I swear by this stuff www.vanclarke.com/products/lifesaver-prewash-treatment

I started off using it the night before I washed my hair, several times a week, and now I use it once a week

AnnieSnap · 02/12/2022 22:08

I wasn’t at all happy with mine in my 50s either. In the end, I concluded that as hair changes with age, it will never look good coloured. In my mid 50s, I had it cropped in a very short Pixi cut and have never looked back. I wasn’t willing to go to my natural colour (white by that point) gradually as it’s a torturous process that looks awful for too long. That said, although I’ve have had my hair long and mid length, I have always liked my hair short. Since I took the plunge, my hair has been in great condition and it’s so much easier and cheaper.

Ok I’ll give that a go.

Do you have a rewards code you’d like me to use?

I don't think I do have a reward code 🤔

YukoandHiro · 03/12/2022 13:17

I'm only 40 and my hair is already like this. It's always been hard to manage but as I've aged it's definitely got a lot worse.
I'm considering a Japanese keratin treatment to permanently remove the curl and frizz.

fucketyfuckwit · 03/12/2022 13:23

A good conditioner is with Keretin and some Moroccan oil. Put loads on over night then wash out in the morning.

Also use some straighteners to smooth it, Even if you add curls.
