night out make up session - where? how? why? etc!

Help!!!!

I have a big night out planned for 12th Feb. It's a black tie ball and I've decided against a dress (I look like a frumpy heifer) so am wearing a smart black top with silver on it too (nicer than it sounds) and black velvet trousers but glamming it up a bit with my accessories - sandals (which I'm still looking for); bag; jewelry etc.

I don't know whether to get my make up done professionally before the event?
If so, where?

Who has done this, were they pleased with it or regret it?

Also, my nails aren't long (hands are ravaged by handwashing with one DS still in nappies), I could do my own nail shaping and varnishing - or is it really worth the extra money to get a proper manicure??

All advice very gratefully received - I want to look special!!

Personally I'd get your nails done professionally (I have mine done every 2 weeks so I'm a bit biased on that one!).

For make up, I'd go to the Chanel counter in dept store and get them to do it for you. If you can fit it in time-wise - go late afternoon and have it done so it's ready for when you go out.

My friend had her make up done by Chanel for her wedding and it was fabulous.

Thanks girls - I'll check where the Mac, Bobby Brown and Chanel counters are locally now!

Do you have to pay much to have them done, and is this ofset against anything you buy?

I might look into getting a nail bar manicure at the same time - or is this best done the day before to allow drying time?

I realise I'm a plebb and know nothing!

Thanks hanaflower - you are a gem!

I've booked in with Bobbi Brown for the afternoon before the event, for an evening look make over.

and free too! Fantastico!

Now, I'm off to find out how much a manicure will cost at the salon down the road.

Thanks!

YOu can't beat Chanel nail polish IME - never chips.

I have a mild benefit disorder, have found them very good for these things (but always end up spending too much, esp. for someone who rarely uses the products)

for hands,i would start moisturising with a vengeance form now on. it s notjust the state of hte nails that is important, but also the state of the skin.
professional makeup sounds wonderful......
