Mascara going all over my eyelids

How do you prevent this?

I dont wear make up a lot and this puts me off when I do

I have tried every type of brush, brand etc in the past. And Ive taken advice ive seen elsewhere to blink onto the wand which I do

But no matter what I always get it above the lashline on my top lids

Ive read that you clean this off with cotton buds but the problem is that I put my eye shadow make up on before the mascara, so if I wipe it off, I will wipe off some of the colour

When Ive tried putting eye shadow on after mascara, I end up getting bits of coloured powder on the lashes, which undoes the mascara.

Very frustrating.

Are you putting mascara on the top of your lashes or something?

Pinkywoo · 26/11/2022 12:46

You need to look down when you put it on your upper lashes, hold the mirror at boob level and let it dry before looking up to do your lower lashes. I also always use a waterproof mascara as it doesn't transfer so easily.

Im not able to hold a mirror at the same time due to issues with my hands. My mirror is a shaving mirror on the wall in the bathroom which pulls out but its at head height

I dont really do the lower lashes and I always do the upper lashes from underneath if that makes sense, not on the top.

Perhaps the mirror is too high so Im looking up

Tilt your head back

Pinkywoo · 26/11/2022 14:18

Or lie a mirror on the kitchen worktop?

Wiennetta · 26/11/2022 14:25

Make sure you remove the excess mascara from
the brush before you apply. Usually the brush just picks up too much mascara which can make it a bit too wet and claggy. I just squish it against the tube as I remove the brush if that makes sense.

Apply the mascara to your eyelashes but don’t get too close, so you don’t touch the mascara wand on the eyelids… Do you get smudges during the day also OP? I had this a lot before, now I use a brand I buy from Amazon called heroine. Hands down it’s the best mascara I have ever used, and is 100% waterproof, the mascara doesn’t move at all during the day, no smudges. It’s not expensive either. But because it’s really waterproof you need an oil based eye makeup remover to take it off…

I do need to buy some different mascara I think

My eyes water constantly so often it goes everywhere anyway so I dont know why Im so worried about the smudges on the lids!!

I use a tubing mascara because it stays put on my oily lids and watery eyes. As a bonus any smudges can be lifted off the skin without smearing. I use a small interdental brush which doesn't disturb eye shadow or liner (or very minimally) and just flicks any bits of mascara away.

InezOz · 27/11/2022 06:34

Do you have hooded eyelids OP? This has always been my issue as well and I think it's due at least in part to having hooded eyelids - they don't sit up and out of the way nicely so everything gets easily smudged!
But yes to echo PPs, the only semi success I've had is changing to a tubing mascara, and tilting my head a long way back to apply.

nutellacrumpets · 27/11/2022 08:02

Tilt you head back and maybe try Mac extend play mascara as it has teeny brush. It's also a maybe a tubing mascara (unclear on that ) but it doesn't budge all day

mytortoisemind · 27/11/2022 10:24

Could you just recover the mascara smudges with your eyeshadow once it's dried? Because you're not doing the full eyelid less likely to get powder on your eyelashes

bellac11 · 27/11/2022 14:52

Thanks all, but what is a tube mascara?

Get your eyelashes tinted and save yourself the bother. IMO mascara is starting to look a bit old fashioned.

Tilt your head back

I do this too. Never was taught to, just what I do. I have to leave my bottom lashes as no matter what I do it runs. I find pinching the lashes to get excess off helps but only if a waterproof mascara (which is hard to remove at the day's end).

Thanks all, but what is a tube mascara?

It coats you lashes in tubes of mascara and you remove it with warm water. So they come if a teeny Toney tubes- kind of.

It's long lasting and non smudging. The gold tube no7 stay perfect is an example.

CMOTDibbler · 27/11/2022 20:08

Tubing mascara is your friend. I use Blinc and its very easy to use and stays put

DeadButDelicious · 27/11/2022 20:12

Tubing mascara has been a revelation for me! Smudges are easy to remove from skin, it stays put all day and comes off with just warm water. Brilliant stuff. I use Jeffree Stars f*ck proof mascara and absolutely love it.
