Hair!

I currently wash my hair everyday in the morning, blow dry it and then run over with the straighteners. I've got thick quite frizzy hair.

I am desperately trying to cut down the amount I wash it to every other day or less on the advice of my hairdresser to improve the condition of it and to save time!
Problem I have however is I cannot sleep at night unless I have my hair up. I then have a big ugly ridge in my hair that is a nightmare to get rid of unless I wash and style my hair again. So, I either do that or scrape it back, which doesn’t really suit me.
I've tried lots of invisibobbles, silk scrunchies etc to try and limit 'the ridge' with no joy.

Does anyone else have this problem? Any tips to get rid of the ridge without completely re washing and styling or to prevent it in the first place?

Thanks for your help! x

So you have curly hair that you are making straight every day. Have you tried wearing it curly occasionally? Alternatively could you straighten the hair bobble kink out without washing and blow drying?

TopSec · 25/11/2022 10:45

I too have my hair up at night time but I use a claw clip. It doesn't leave the marks that an elastic band / scrunchy does. I just lift, twist and clip it in. Its not uncomfortable either as I place it at the top of my head so not lay on it. May be worth a try

Sandcastlesx · 25/11/2022 10:47

I wish it was curly! It’s kinda thick and frizzy but not curly so it needs to be blow dried and run over with the straighteners to smooth it. If not it’s just massive - think Monica in friends humid hair

Could you wear a sleep bonnet instead of putting your hair up? I have one for long hair which tucks all my hair back together so it almost feels like it’s in a low pony!

Sounds interesting - never heard of them. Will Google, thank you!!

Get a cut that works with your hair not against it.

SocksAndTheCity · 25/11/2022 12:15

I wear a satin lined beanie hat to keep mine in check and it's perfect - it's very soft and comfortable plus I can pull it down over my eyes so it doubles as a sleep mask 😀

This is the one I have: www.cultbeauty.co.uk/kitsch-satin-lined-jersey-sleep-beanie-black/13032978.html?

I have to agree, I honestly do think you have curly hair. I said exactly the same about mine, and lo and behold, after ditching the heat styling during Covid I now have thick, wavy/curly hair, with no frizz.

There is a huge curly hair community on Insta that has loads of advice for people starting to embrace their natural hair after years of blow-drying and straightening.

Products are the answer!

Mine would be a Monica mess if I didn't style it properly, which means (for me) leave-in conditioner, curl cream on very wet hair, plenty of gel, scrunching and diffusing dry.
Only ever use a microfibre towel to gently dry your hair with a light squeezing action too (or even better just wrap your hair in the microfibre to dry a little before diffusing) - as the normal towels really rough up the cuticles.

But, if you really don't want to try it, I second claw clips on the top of your head or a bonnet/wrap. A silky pillowcase is also excellent for reducing frizz. (All of these are favourite tactics for curly haired people, as they're needed to protect curls and prevent indents overnight. Just sayin' 😉 )

SoapMactavish · 25/11/2022 12:33

I bet you have curly hair. You just haven't worked out the right way for styling it curly yet. Everyone seems to think curly hair just magically falls into ringlets on its own. Its doesn't. Curly hair still needs products and styling to get that 'effortlessly curly' look.

I don't understand why you need to wash your hair everyday to blow dry it straight. Why can't you just either blow dry it or straighten it again in the morning when you wake up to get the kinks out. Then spray some dry shampoo on the roots. I get 3 days out my hair doing this if I straighten it (mine is curly).

MadameSzyszkoBohusz · 25/11/2022 13:11

The Babyliss Big Hair can be used on dry hair to refresh your style without washing.

MadameSzyszkoBohusz · 25/11/2022 13:12

(But I also think you've got curly hair that you treat as if it's straight, hence the frizz!)

Geneticsbunny · 25/11/2022 13:44

I agree with the others. Monica has curly hair that hasn't been styled properly. I am only just working my curly hair out but I brush mine when wet, add some mouse and work it through and then dry with a difuser. I get lovely curls. Slightly messier than I would like them to be but definitely curls.

Rina66 · 25/11/2022 13:54

I sleep with my hair on top of my head too! I use these and I don't get a line as they're wide and soft - you used to be able to get them in Boots and Claires too. All other ponytail bobble things just give me a headache as they're too tight or don't hold my hair as they're too loose.

Yup! All of this.

I was the same, just thought I had crazy frizzy hair and my friend suggested the curly girl method. I tried it during covid and it did wonders for my hair. It's grown in length so much too. I no longer follow it so strictly but I only wash my hair with a sulphate free shampoo maybe 2-3 times a month. I co-wash with conditioner twice a week, use a leave in conditioner and a gel. I still blow dry and straighten it now and again but I try to minimise heat and let it airdry usually.

I'd recommend getting a sleeping bonnet as others have suggested. Or could you maybe wear your hair half up half down it you don't like it all up?

Sandcastlesx · 25/11/2022 15:39

Well this is all food for thought thank you! If I ever leave my hair to dry naturally it’s just a big frizzy mess and so I have always assumed it’s not curly. I might have a go at some products and a diffuser and see what the results are like!

thanks for all the tips to avoid the hair bobble ridge I will investigate all of them x

Yup, mine used to dry naturally into a frizzy mess too until I started caring for it properly and using the correct products. Now I have a headful of ringlets. Even my mum was shocked at how curly it was.

You could plait it and wear it wavy
Or dry shampoo and curling tongs on day 2 or 3 works well
You probably do have curly hair though, just because it's being heat treated so much it looks frizzy, and is probably damaged by it. Do you use a heat protection spray?

MadameSzyszkoBohusz · 25/11/2022 16:48

Love the plaits idea, will defo be giving that a go.

Yes I use heat protection spray but years of abuse has taken its toll!

OP you should look up Nuala Morey on Instagram. She is a curly hair specialist hairdresser and she is amazing.

Her account has loads of before and after photos, and there are plenty of people who are early on in their curly hair recovery.

If you're anywhere near Bristol you should absolutely go there for an appointment. Even if you're not near Bristol you should have a trip as it might transform your life!

Waiting times are pretty long for her, but she has an excellent team and I'm sure any of them would be great as well.

prettyprinceofpartiez · 25/11/2022 17:24

Try a sleepytie (available on Amazon) I've just started using one for similar reasons and it's great! Leaves no ridge, just smooth movement x
