Ok talulasmum, spill the beans. What charity shop was it? I live 10 mins away from Wimbledon Village.

Desiderata · 30/01/2008 22:48

Wow!

I'm delighted by that, talula. I've been an afficianado of the charity shop for many, many years.

My first purchase, in 1979, was a pig-skin tailored jacket (in the days before designer labels but it was damned fine). It cost me 15p. My charity shop regularly sells Jigsaw, NoaNoa, Boden (not too sure about Boden), etc.

Keep your eyes open for the silly, eclectic things like egg cups and coasters, too. And of course, toys and books for the kids.

Ah, I shall go to bed happy now. Another convert in a throwaway society

expatinscotland · 30/01/2008 22:50

how i long for the charity shops of Edinburgh.

Desiderata · 30/01/2008 22:51

Are you going soon, expat?

I doubt you can buy diddlysquat where you are, can you?

Maidamess · 30/01/2008 22:52

My charity shops are dreadful. They are sooo expensive. And seem to be run too much like proper shops now, when I long for a fusty charity shop with a bell that dings when you open the door, full of badly knitted soft toys , plastic necklaces and mismatched china. Charity round here has gone way too corporate!

Carmenere · 30/01/2008 22:53

Oh good idea, the Charity shops near me are full of tat generally not an incredibly wealthy area but I am often in Wimbledon Village, I must check it out, mind you it is about the only place in Wimbledon village I could afford to shop.
My friend lives near Goodge St and regularly gets AMAZING stuff in the Charity shops there, he got a Prada leather coat for 20 quid!!

expatinscotland · 30/01/2008 22:53

i'm going in feb.

but yeah, pretty limited around here.

BUT we're saving heaps of money because there's nothing to fritter away spend around here except petrol and food.

Desiderata · 30/01/2008 23:00

February it is, then.

And don't just focus on clothes when you get there. We all have to equip our homes. It's things like gravy boats and lemon squeezers that, with the best will in the world, are not top of anybodies list of priorities, that make a place a home.

Take time to scour.

And the rule of thumb is to go to wealthy areas, of course.

Good hunting, girls! I'm off to my bed now!

expatinscotland · 30/01/2008 23:03

i long for a proper tea strainer, some quality white linens that are just begging for me to dye them, kitschy bits and bobs for the walls, old pins/brooches to jazz up my curtains, costume jewellry and funky clothes.

oh the charity shops in Edinburgh are pretty fab

£8 is very good for Wimbledon - in Richmond/CHiswick some of the charity shops are REALLY overpriced now

talulasmum · 31/01/2008 10:22

Talulasmum I actually live in Kingston, but I used to live in Merton Mansions , about a squillion years ago, next to the David Lloyd centre.

I havent been to Wimbledon village for a while but I do like it. I had a meal at The Fire Stables (?) which was jolly nice, bit pricey but we don't get out much!

Perhaps we will pass each other one day! I shall be wearing a big badge with 'MUMSNETTER' written on it

talulasmum · 31/01/2008 20:21

maidamess;

i know kingston well. i live in worcester park. it's pretty boring, just a waitrose & a pizza express (although we have a costa coffee now) the rest is just banks, estate agents and about 10 charity shops, lol, which i shall now frequent.

i'm off for a very early night.

hahahaha
we rented in Chiswick
then we lived in the cheapest part of the borough of Richmond
and then we fled, priced out of London, and moved to New Zealand

hence the nostalgia for Wimbledon Village etc.

I used to live in Ewell (still have a house there) and worked in Tolworth Tower. Used to love shopping in Kingston and Wimbledon. Nostalgic for the shopping too!

Was in Chester last weekend and there are loads of charity shops - was tempted for forrage but had a moaning DS with me and a lugagge allowance to consider!
