Long shapeless flowery dresses EVERYWHERE

Why?? Who is buying them all? Every shop from cheap to v expensive seems to have loads. They are shapeless and often made of weird thin material with floral designs.

I'm not anti dresses and I am fairly tall but they just look awful. True I am a 14 so not particularly thin but I think I'm fairly average so who exactly are they for?

Sorry to rant but I need some new work clothes and everything is either covered in sequins or looks like cheapo curtains.

Tell me I'm not the only one who's puzzled.

I’m puzzled too.

I do see women wearing them and I just think ‘fashion victim’.

It’s a bit like the equally puzzling fashion for extremely unflattering ankle grazing clown wide leg trousers that make women look like children’s tv presenters.

Even more confusing is the fact that somehow the fashion media persuade women that these items make them look good. It’s not just younger women, I see women who should know better falling for the hype.

Brogues · 17/11/2022 10:39

Fashion victim?
Falling for the hype?

Maybe they just like them and bought them because of that reason! I like floral dresses - got a few from Ghost and New Look I wear regularly.

WrinklesShminkles · 17/11/2022 10:43

To be fair everything seems to be sequinned in the run up to Christmas and then they disappear for another year. But I agree about flowery droopy dresses. I have a hankering to dress as Wednesday Adams at the moment but it's impossible Smile

Gruelle · 17/11/2022 10:54

But where on earth are you looking, @GatherlyGal? I mean, I know there were loads of flowery dresses over summer - but it’s November! All I’m seeing is cord everything, and cashmere balaclavas. Perhaps my eyes just slide over anything that isn’t designed to keep me warm over Winter.

Wide, cropped trousers are completely excellent, @Worldgonecrazy. They make the wearer look so cool and … un-ingratiating.

LadyOfTheCanyon · 17/11/2022 10:56

I have a friend who has embraced the droopy dress and trainers look. I'm sure she looks on trend but objectively the look just doesn't suit her shape at all.

I have this conversation with myself in my head all the time - obviously I want women to wear what they feel comfortable in and think they look good in. I hate myself for mentally policing women's choices but I'm still internally shouting " you look shit, love!"

Wednesday and Morticia have long been my style icons, even though physically I'm more at the Nanny Ogg end of the witch scale.

Black Dylon is your friend.

Claudia84 · 17/11/2022 10:59

I like the flowery dresses! I'm fairly slim but I have a long torso and my legs are chunky so I find them much more flattering than trousers.
I agree there are some poorly made ones but that's the same with everything.

Claudia84 · 17/11/2022 11:00

Also love the Morticia Adam's look!

shiningstar2 · 17/11/2022 11:02

They are not for me as I'm only 5,ft. I think they look good on tall women. On me they look like something my granny would wear on a day she's not going out. 😁

GatherlyGal · 17/11/2022 11:07

@LadyOfTheCanyon in my town options are limited but M&S is full of them, Jigsaw has some, Whistles has them.

Lucky you @Claudia84 it's a lovely idea and I'm jealous of people who look good in them. It's the lack of structure that I hate and worst of all a thin string-like belt. Nothing less flattering for anyone with some mid-section bulk.

OP posts:
GatherlyGal · 17/11/2022 11:08

@shiningstar2 yes the old 'housecoat' look. Not ideal.

Gruelle · 17/11/2022 11:16

What prevents you from shopping online, @GatherlyGal? Limitless choice of non-flowery, non-shapeless, non-dress options.

LadyOfTheCanyon · 17/11/2022 11:18

Well I would assume that it's easier ( and nicer) to see and try things in in the flesh, rather than have the double whammy of disappointment from online ordering if it doesnt fit/ feel right.

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 17/11/2022 11:23

I know! What are all these women doing, wearing what they like?

Don’t they know of OP’s disapproval of their wanton ways?

losingit31 · 17/11/2022 11:25

I know who is buying them - all the British teachers who work in the middle east and have to go to work with their knees and shoulders covered and nothing clingy. They're like a work uniform around here!

GatherlyGal · 17/11/2022 11:25

I do of course shop oline @Gruelle but before starting a new job I have time on my hands that I chose to spend shopping in shops.

Also it is tedious the constant returning of parcels of ill-fitting items.

I think mainly this is wrong time of year for shopping for work clothes as everyone is in Christmas party mode.

OP posts:
GatherlyGal · 17/11/2022 11:27

I'm not disapproving in the least @ChardonnaysBeastlyCat as I said I'm jealous of those who can look good in long dresses.

I was just curious about who is buying all these flouncy dresses in November!

OP posts:
Gingercatlover · 17/11/2022 11:30

I'm wearing them for work mainly.
Love them.
Each to their own.

minipie · 17/11/2022 11:39

I can’t wait for this trend to be over personally.

I’m slim but short (5’3) and they look terrible on me, I look like I’m drowning in curtains. Even worse when there are ruffles or puff sleeves. The dresses might look better if they were properly fitted at the waist but they almost never are. I also feel ridiculous in them, like I’m playing dress up.

I can understand people still buying them in November though - wear with tights, boots, thermal vest underneath, still works for this weather. Arguably better than in summer when they are all a bit sweaty due to being man made.

GatherlyGal · 17/11/2022 11:41

@minipie good point about the tights. Also agree on the puff sleeves. they are everywhere too. Makes wearing a cardigan or jacket more difficult with all the bulk. Plus makes me look like an American footballer.

JackieDaws · 17/11/2022 11:43

Like the people on here are style icons. I'd much rather see women in these dresses than the clown outfits shown on some threads.

Anyone in possession of a pair of warm tights and boots..

crochetmeahat · 17/11/2022 15:18

I have just tried on five and sent them all back! Summery dresses but with long sleeves. Not at all flattering but nice patterns.
In some of the shops they only seem to have them in dreary colours

Oh completely agree re the belts! There is definitely a fine line between flattering and "look what I made with some old curtains."
