What does it mean exactly in terms of the UK rather than the US?

Most ones i follow on Instagram are in that place of needing a 10 in Next and a 16 in H&M.

Niftythrifter · 16/11/2022 19:24

@2tired2careanymore but doesn’t that just mean inconsistent sizing?

I’ve never heard the term mid-sized in relation to a person
Bit I guess medium, so U.K. 10-12 in somewhere like Marks & Spencer ?

Ohmygoshposh · 16/11/2022 19:25

U.K. sizing is all over the place

I have size 8 trousers from Hush that fit. I couldn’t get a Topshop size 8 waistband higher than my thighs …….

Niftythrifter · 16/11/2022 19:27

@Ohmygoshposh I would class size ten as small.0h the confusion!

I’m a 14 (tall) and reckon I’m midsize. Not willowy but not plus size.

Spoodee · 16/11/2022 19:28

I would say midsized is 12-14-16

18 and over is plus
10 and under is small

museumum · 16/11/2022 19:29

The “midsize” person I follow on Instagram looks about 14-16. That seems about right to me for an average height. Not “slim” but not “plus size” either (plus size starts around 16+ doesn’t it).

Niftythrifter · 16/11/2022 19:30

@Spoodee that is what I would class as midsize too

Yes, I would say 12/14/16 - the exact sizes that actually get very little representation in the media.

FoxtrotOscarDear · 16/11/2022 19:33

I saw an explanation on TT the other day by a lady who was quite cross that midsize was being high jacked by people who aren’t in the plus-sized category.
She was British.
I found it quite confusing tbh as she reeled off a whole load of categories that are subsections of the plus size community. I didn’t realise there were so many & find all the labels baffling.
don’t the clothes just say 14/16/22 or whatever?

IhearyouClemFandango · 16/11/2022 19:34

Midsize would be 14, 16, small 18 to my mind.

boboshmobo · 16/11/2022 20:03

12/14

blueberrylace · 16/11/2022 20:22

To me it would be 12/14. Or a BMI of around 25.

I appreciate neither of those methods are a perfect way to measure!

icelolly12 · 16/11/2022 20:40

Mid size is a bit chubby/chunky/lumpy- not "skinny" slim not "fat" obese. Generally a UK 14ish.

BlackberriesArePurple · 16/11/2022 20:47

It really depends on build and especially height. Someone tall and a size 10-12 generally would be fairly slim. A tall 14 would be mid-sized, 16-18 would look large.

Someone under 5'5" and a size 10 would be mid-sized from what I've seen, if by that you mean neither fat nor slim? 12-14 at that height is generally pretty chunky, but everyone carries weight differently.

Clothes sizes should be standardised an based on measurements as they are with men's clothes, and women's clothes in most of continental Europe! It's all a bit of a nonsense.

KylieCharlene · 16/11/2022 20:51

To me, midsize would require 'medium' clothing in PJs etc which is, depending on the store, usually a 12-14 or 14-16.

dontgobaconmyheart · 16/11/2022 21:23

I've only really seen it coined as a phrase on instagram where it's quite a common thing, 'influencers' attempting to make a living out of affiliate linking clothing for their 'midsize body' - eg ' pinterest outfits recreated on my midsize body' ' on the model vs my midsize body' both of which cropped up on my feed earlier. On IG It seems to translate as anyone who's anything slightly over a size 10 which seems a bit reaching, to around a 14-16 who has a well proportioned figure that looks good in clothes, but usually not an evidently athletic one.

I'd always taken it to mean a body that sits in between plus size (16-18 and above) and the smaller women's sizes (4,6,8,10,12 and below) so basically the majority of the UK according to the average clothing size here.
