People who know about hair please help! Colour not what I hoped for after balayage.

Disclaimer – I know nothing about hair and usually visit the hairdresser once a year, so this may well be my fault, but either way I really don’t like my new colour so please help!
Had my hair cut a fortnight ago and spoke to the stylist about possibly adding a few lighter bits as I felt my dark colour was ageing me a bit. Said I in no way wanted to go blonde, but wanted something subtle but also just enough so that I would notice it. She advised me to book in for a balayage when I was ready. I went home and looked it up and thought it looked nice, so booked it. When I got there, she said she wasn’t available as she was the owner and had a meeting, but she’d spoken to the other stylist about what I wanted. They then had a chat and she showed me a swatch, which was gingery. I said it was a bit warm and I’d prefer a cooler tone, but she said with hair as dark as mine it wouldn’t lift easily and off she went.
The colourist then put on a whole head of foils, which my Googling leads me to believe was not balayage? She told me that she was really slow at colouring so it would take a while and was back and forth with other customers. When she eventually came back she called a senior stylist over and there was a bit of muttering and she said ‘owner didn’t think it would lift so much’ and then said ‘you’d best phone her to ask what to do’. I asked if it had gone too light and was told it was fine. When dried and styled I was shocked at the difference, but thought I might get used to it and it would just take time. It’s been a week and I really don’t think I will grow to like it. It looks not so bad in the photos, but in reality seems stripy and a bit badger’s bum and there’s no shine to it at all so it looks dry and almost dusty if that makes sense. I’ve used Philip Kingsley elasticizer and purple shampoo/conditioner, but the brassiness and dryness remains.
I’m not going back as whilst I think they haven’t done a good job, perhaps I wasn’t clear enough about what I wanted. I’ve also got some less trivial issues going on in my life at present and I can’t face a possible debate/argument over this. I need to have something done, probably a darker whole head tint, but I can’t risk damaging the condition any more than it has been already so don’t want anything involving bleach. I would really very much appreciate any advice from people who know about hair, because I have no idea of the best option. First pic is original colour, others are new colour.

Sorry that was long, TLDR - balayage gone wrong, what should I do to fix it that doesn't involve bleach?

After reading your post I thought It would be awful, but I think it looks quite nice!

Snooks1971 · 12/11/2022 22:32

Crikey yes I agree with first pp! It looks good!

justasking111 · 12/11/2022 22:32

I like it too can't see ginger. Looks natural. Did you want a more dramatic look though?

Afterfire · 12/11/2022 22:32

Well they’ve just done highlights haven’t they. And it’s okay but I can see what you mean.

Disclaimer - I’m not a hairdresser. But I have had my fair share of hair disasters including a 5 hour bleach job that was horrible.

If you’re worried about ruining it with permanent colour over the top go for something like L’Oréal casting which has no ammonia and do a strand test on both your natural hair and the bleached bits. It should colour over it and give it a shine. I’ve rescued my hair like this many times!

StarDolphins · 12/11/2022 22:33

Gosh I was expecting a full blonde highlighted head! I think it looks lovely!

catsonahottinroof · 12/11/2022 22:35

I think overall it doesn't look too bad (just going by the last photo), but I can see why you're not happy by the contrast in the roots area, especially if you paid a lot of money for it. I'm no expert but I would get a blue toner, rather than purple. Try Sally's or a professional hairdressers. Or another option, a semi permanent dye in a lighter shade to blend it all together, eg 'dark ash blonde' it won't change the colour of most of it but will give a more unified look (I think).

tencent · 12/11/2022 22:37

Thanks for all the nice comments, it's much appreciated, but I couldn't get the photos to really show what it looks like - crap camera on phone. I appreciate it's subjective, but I really don't like it. Perhaps it's too much of a change from very dark brown and I just wasn't ready for it. I've attached a photo of what I expected and what I thought I'd explained, although obviously knew it wouldn't look as good as that!

It’s a mixed bag.

From my experience, it can be difficult to go from dark hair to light hair in one sitting so a gingery colour is to be expected almost for the first sitting. Your hair isn’t “too light” and the colour looks about right. You can get them to tone it which would make it darker and more ashy.

I don’t think it’s a balayage. It just looks like highlights as the colour is high up your head.

Your hair looks okay but I think it looks average. I’d would not be thrilled if my hair looked like that after paying £££ for it as it looks like a basic colour job by a newbie

tencent · 12/11/2022 22:38

I feel like they put too many foils in and I'd said I wanted to remain dark, but just have some little bits lighter, whereas there's hardly any dark hair left, only a little at the roots.

BabyYoZenZen · 12/11/2022 22:39

You look lovely OP but in the last photo I can see what you mean definitely. It doesn't blend as well as a balayage should.

tencent · 12/11/2022 22:40

Sorry, should have said I paid £108, which I appreciate might not be much in some areas, but for the small town I live is quite a lot perhaps? God knows, it was a lot for me though!

OP posts:
angru · 12/11/2022 22:42

You can go back and show them the photo and see what they can do to fix it.

Or go to another salon and see what they think (although you’ll have to pay for the fix)

I don’t think the cost to fix it will be that expensive as they will probably paint your natural hair colour back on eg a root stretch. Not everyone is good at colouring hair so you shouldn’t return to the 1st salon if you’re not confident in their skill

Rainingoutthere · 12/11/2022 22:43

It’s not awful, but it’s not right either.
It looks like you had highlights done 8 weeks ago as they have left a 1 inch root (strange)

id suggest going back and asking for a semi permanent or even a toner out on the roots

catsonahottinroof · 12/11/2022 22:44

Yes I don't think there will be any way to get it like the hair you wanted without going to a hairdressers, as you will need to put darker sections back in. You could just do a casting colour like the colour in your highlighted parts of your picture, then when it has grown out after a few months it should look similar to what you wanted to achieve.

PhillyJoe · 12/11/2022 22:44

Part of the reason the example picture looks so good is because it’s curled which exposes the darker hair underneath.

I think you hair looks nice but it you want it darker I would do as a PP says and use a Castings dye. It will fade over time but always found it made my hair feel better not worse.

Afterfire · 12/11/2022 22:44

The highlighted sections in the photo are much thinner than the sections they’ve highlighted in your hair. They should be able to correct it by weaving some darker low lights or balayage through if you feel confident enough to go back to them.

tencent · 12/11/2022 22:49

Thanks everyone - would a semi permanent box dye work do you think? I don't really want to go back as I know that something went wrong from their muttered conversation and instead of being honest they fudged it a bit. Even if I lift the top layer, there's no dark underneath so even if I curled it it would still be light all over, which I know I said I didn't want. My main concern is not damaging it any more as it was in really good condition before, but is almost wiry now, especially at the ends.

OP posts:
angru · 12/11/2022 22:57

What do you want?

if you just want the old colour back, then yes wack box dye on. It won’t improve the condition though. You need hair care treatments for that. Also long term, the colour may fade weirdly.

if you want to salvage the colour then no box dye wouldn’t work cause you want to strategically colour it

tencent · 12/11/2022 23:07

Good question @angru! Lots of people saying it looks nice, but I just can't see it so maybe my judgement is not the best 😅To my mind it looks a bit rubbish and scrappy and I'm sorry I went ahead with it, and having gone from shiny hair in good condition, to having it look dry and dull is just disappointing. I think I might try another salon and will see if I can have a consultation before making any decisions. I take your point about a box dye fading weirdly, might this happen with a semi permanent as well?

OP posts:
angru · 12/11/2022 23:15

I think your hair is right between good and bad if that makes sense? Like it looks okay regardless of it not being what you wanted, but it also isn’t hair I’d notice and complement. It’s not awful/scrappy but it is average

how do you feel about leaving it how it is and using hair treatments to get the condition back? Cause in a few weeks your hair will grow out and you’ll get a dark root back which will help it look like a balayage

k1233 · 12/11/2022 23:15

Just lost my post :(

I recommend this stuff - it's an amazing colour depositing shampoo and conditioner. Expensive but very worth it (my hairdresser recommended)

tencent · 12/11/2022 23:31

Yes, I take your point about being average @angru . Sorry to keep @ing you, but can I just ask what treatments you'd recommend. I'm sure I can live with it for a while, but would love to improve the condition.

Thanks for the recommendation @k1233 - I've found it on Amazon and will take a look tomorrow.

angru · 12/11/2022 23:33

Everyone I know raves about georgie mane products - I haven’t tried it yet as I’m still working through my kerastase mask (in the white tub). Really recommend it.

angru · 12/11/2022 23:36

Also olaplex or a bond building product would help - Superdrug have their own version.

switch your shampoo/conditioner over to one for coloured hair which will help

also, it could be worth complaining to the hair salon and asking for a free treatment to help the condition as a resolution as you’re scared to have another colour session.
