I have two or three sebaceous/pilar cysts on my head. I’ve had a number removed previously on the NHS but I don’t think they do it anymore. Maybe if it was causing problems, eg catching but my issue is mainly cosmetic or rather how gross they feel (as you can’t actually see them under my hair).

Its a very small procedure but a clinic I contacted suggested £395 to remove a single cyst. Has anyone else had these, had them removed and if so how/where and was it worth it?

I had a largish pilar cyst on my forehead just on the hairline. My GP said the NHS doesn't do those removals as its 'cosmetic'. I actally found it really uncomfortable so asked for a recommendation for a private dermatologist. I made enquiries and was told with the initial consultation and the actual operation it would cost over £900. In the end I was lucky that my husband's work private health scheme covered it.

The procedure was fairly straightforward and done with a local anesthetic but I got the impression that the surgeon was surprised by the size of the cyst when he finally got it out.

It was a real relief when it was gone as the feeling of it pressing against my skull was very wearing - imagine someone firmly pressing a rubber-tipped pencil into your head 24/7.

I think of the insurance company hasn't covered it, it would still have been worth paying for as I felt so much better after it was done.

I had mine done in May. It was getting quite big and was softening up, which is apparently a bad sign. It was £468 inc vat for the op, but also £140 for the initial consultation and £35 to have the stitches out afterwards. It did burst during the surgery, which I only knew because the doc asked the nurse to wipe his face 😬

Mine was right on the crown of my head and the key thing I wasn't expecting is that I had to have a compression bandage for 24 hours - it was like being in fancy dress as the mummy and I had to go home like that from the appointment. Apparently it is better if you own a nice tight hat that you can wear home, but no one told me so I had the massive head bandage and looked hideous.

No problems with pain etc. I had paracetamol for three days and that was all it needed.

It has healed very nicely and is a huge relief to have it gone. Recently had a bit of itchiness as the subcutaneous stitches worked their way out 🤮 and some ingrowing hairs inside the scar sorted themselves out. It was a horrid feeling for about 4 days but is now completely fine.

Absolutely recommend having it done. It is so nice not having a lump on my head.
