To dye my own blonde hair?

Hello,

Just wondering if anyone knows if this is possible or a total disaster in the making.

I have always had blonde highlights, mousey hair colour naturally but with the price of everything nowadays paying for a full head of highlights every couple of months is no longer doable/ reasonable. Can I dye my own hair and it be successful? Obviously I wouldn't try highlights but am thinking something along the lines of buying professional hair colour to use at home and asking a friend to help do it, just painting it on the roots so its more of an allover blonde colour than highlights? I usually just have bleach highlights but I don't think I can just pour bleach wholesale onto my roots.

Does anyone have a at home solution?

Thanks!

@Helpmymum if you have a look at the colour charts and match up with the lightest Ash blonde, you wont go far wrong, and whoever you get to do your hair really stress to not overlap the colour it's really really important, if I was near you I could do it, but I'm probably not near you unfortunately!😊

Got it, thankyou- most important thing is not to overlap! Aww thanks l, you've been very kind offering up your knowledge. I will report back with results once I've taken the plunge 🤞

I've used box dyes for years (Garnier Holly Willoughby) - it's saved me loads of money over the years and I've had lots of compliments on my hair colour. Never had any disasters but my hair is dark blonde anyway - not sure how it would come out on darker hair. I sometimes get patches underneath at the back where I've missed a spot because I do it myself, but if you get a friend to do it for you it will be better.

When using box dye, definitely don't just do the roots. You'll end up with 2 different hair colours. You've got to do the whole head for an even result. Also pay attention to warm v cold undertones. Your hair currently looks like it has a cold undertone, so do not buy anything that say 'golden blonde' etc.

You might be ok. Just take plenty of pics of your hair before and after so you can see if/when the condition goes seriously south. Box dye tends to really mess with the condition of the hair over time.

Can you not get a product that is just for roots? Salons often sell it themselves. With your highlights, your roots are less obvious because of the way it's done. Once you go down the box dye route, roots becme very obvious, even after 2 weeks or so at times.

Enlisting a friend is a great idea, likely much better results, especially at the back (remember, roots also show at your neckline etc, and it'll be harder for you to notice as you don't see that area often)
