If you have naturally quite rubbish hair …..

Do you bother with it, and how does it make you feel?

I have pretty rubbish hair. Doesn’t grow long, thin, frizzy/curly, snaps easily, never looks healthy.

Over the years I’ve not bothered with it, I guess because it always looks a bit rubbish, it feels hopeless spending money on it so it continues to be crap, so it’s a vicious circle.

I’ve recently been feeling really low about how I look, had a baby, turned 40, lockdown happened……etc Feel like I’ve totally lost my way.

So I decided to make an effort and treat myself to a trip to the hairdresser

I had my first ever professional dye job (only ever done box dye before at home) and a restyle. Spent 4.5 hours in the salon and cost well over £100.

I just naively expected to emerge from the salon feeling a million dollars. But I was so disappointed with the new hair do, and wanted to cry. I tried not to show my dismay as I’m sure the hairdresser (who was lovely) had done her best - it’s not her fault my hair is just naturally crap.

Didn’t help that the lady next to me in the salon had amazing hair and left swishing her mane like Kate Middleton! That’s how I want to feel!

So if you have crap hair, how do you deal with it?! I guess I just need to accept what I’ve got, kind of in the same way someone whose always been a size 16 needs to stop hankering after being a size 8 and learn to dress for their body shape & feel good.

Not even sure why I’m posting, just gutted I spent 5 hours and over £100 on treating myself and came away feeling rubbish .

Yes, my hair is total crap. It’s fine and naturally sort of curly/ frizzy. It is quite long though because it grows very quickly and I can’t afford to go to the hairdressers. There’s not much I can do about it because I also have a skin condition and can’t use dyes or anything but mild, basic products. It’s terrible because sometimes I get comments from people who either think I just like my hair like this or I can’t be arsed to do anything with it but it’s neither. It’s really depressing.

I have very fine hair, and also not a huge amount of it (very thin on my crown.)

I bought a rotating hot brush to help give volume at the root and get it glossy and shiny. Game-changer! Looks much better than I could ever style it with a hair dryer...

What’s the name of your rotating hot brush? I’d love to do something about my limp, fine hair

KillingLoneliness · 09/11/2022 21:36

Curly frizz ball here - honestly I give up, I’ve tried so many different methods and products, some days it looks ok, other days it’s just a complete mess, I don’t know how to look after it or style it so I feel your pain!

mynameischloe · 09/11/2022 21:37

@Abracadabra12345 the babyliss big hair is very good

DorritLittle · 09/11/2022 21:51

Oh yes I have a Babyliss too. It is good!

HairyMcLarie · 10/11/2022 07:06

Mine is Fine, thin and naturally 'wavy'. Mousey. Even with blonde highlights and long or shoulder length it looked fucking awful.

I was brave and went for a 'long pixie'. V short at the back and a sweepy fringe. OMG best thing ever. No styling and looks glamorous and 'edgy'. Took years off me. Massively recommend it.

PumpkinSpicedTea · 10/11/2022 08:17

I've got rubbish hair - thick but was damaged since the 00s when straightening was the thing to do. It doesn't grow past my shoulders so I've just had a choppy bob done and I love it! Can just leave it to air dry.

Icequeen01 · 10/11/2022 08:17

I also have fine, limp hair and spend an absolute fortune at the hairdressers having it cut, coloured and treated to make sure it looks passable! I also used to use the Babyliss hot brush and it was great. Just word of warning, my hair somehow got tangled up in it once and it wrenched a huge chunk of my hair out at the back. Took almost a year to grow back!

FearofQueefing · 10/11/2022 09:16

@Abracadabra12345

Have a Babylis Big Hair Petite. Highly recommend.

Oh I also scored some Aldi fake olaplex. I like that so I'm going to invest in some proper olaplaex

What's that called please?

Thank you. I have hair just sitting on my shoulders so have ordered the larger version or rather my DH has for my Christmas gift! I understand from reviews that the Petite version is for short hair?

I'm pretty uncoordinated so hope I don’t get too tangled!

Ohreallyisit · 10/11/2022 09:23

I’ve got really thin hair too and my hair dresser suggested Great Lengths hair extensions. Have a oil at these pics- they look great and although expensive I’m considering it…

Ouch!

You see, this is me so I will try to be careful! Ironic though: you use it to add volume to your hair and you do the opposite by ripping it out

Alessia6 · 10/11/2022 10:03

Ive had them 10 years, they are expensive but I would never be without them!

Sorry this is in reply to @Ohreallyisit

Ohmygoshposh · 10/11/2022 10:08

Re extensions, I have ethical objections to using “real” ie human hair, plus as I exercise a lot and wash hair a lot how would that work??

I have the babyliss big hair and although I like the style it gives, I do notice much more hair falling out over the next few days…. I already have thin enough hair without extra loss!

would be prepared to pay for an Airwap if it would really genuinely be a game changer….

I have really crap fine hair that tangles and the hint of a breeze. I use an Afro comb 95% of the time and it has really helped avoid breakage. I only tie it back in a soft scrunchie which has reduced damage too. I absolutely love Percy and reed wonderbalm which miraculously gives it bounce.
I see my hairdresser every seven weeks for a trim to stop it looking straggly and vegetable colour to give it some depth which makes it look like I have more hair.
It's far from brilliant but it's a hell of a lot better.

Rainmakerof69 · 13/11/2022 07:45

@Ohmygoshposh QVC sells the airwrap and you can use easypay, plus they accept returns if you're not happy. It does get mixed reviews so not something I'd bother with, but I have fine thin flat hair.

CliffsofMohair · 13/11/2022 07:48

AlwaysFoldingWashing · 09/11/2022 20:00

Do you have fine hair? I don't think my hair would be able to withstand the weight of them so very jealous of you Grin

tape extensions were great for fine hair

JangolinaPitt · 13/11/2022 07:49

I sympathise… In my case though I did have thick lush hair but then last summer lost a lot of weight in a short time )love, not illness!) and my hair fell out and will now just not grow so am stuck with short frizzy hair.

I don't understand this as the hair growing now won't have been damaged by what I did in the 00s- unless it's super long and never been cut I suppose 🤷🏼‍♀️.

My hair is shit, I hate it. Had a chunk cut off and it made me look like Liz bloody Truss!! Not sure what to do with it, the sides just won't grow which I know is partly my fault as I straighten daily but if I don't I look really old and ugly. Straightening makes me look a bit less ugly and not quite as old!! I was reading about rosemary oil helping hair growth so may look into that

mynameisnotmichaelcaine · 13/11/2022 10:48

I absolutely hate my hair. It's just so thin. It used to be shiny at least, but now I dye it as it's almost totally grey and I feel too young to have completely grey hair at 43.

I have a choppy bob with highlights and use a Babyliss big hair, powder and a fuck-ton of hairspray to make it look vaguely ok.

I try not to think about it too much. I've always been a natural size 10/12, so I try to remind myself that I have been genetically lucky in some areas!

MosmanP · 13/11/2022 12:27

Extensions are the answer depends what you want I mean mines long thin curly and crap. But I know that if I do do the curly hair method and I stick with it and have some patience i.e. six months it literally looks stunning I got stopped in the streets about it. And then because it is so healthy as a result when I do go for a blow dry it behaves it self.

Day today I don’t love the curly look but by putting up with it, it allows me about three times a year to look like a knock out.

Redup · 13/11/2022 14:14

Cosycover · 09/11/2022 19:51

I paid £400 for extensions. Best decision ever.

How long do they last? and what type are they please?

NearLifeExperience · 13/11/2022 16:29

I've got the rubbishest of rubbish hair: frizzy and fine, dried out, and doesn't grow long.
I do have to dye because I'm 50% grey, which further damages it.
So... I decided to adopt the permanent updo. I never used to put my hair up at all, but now it's always up. Sometimes I use a fake high ponytail, too.
When I went out with hair up first time, my neighbour told me I looked glamorous! So consequently I now dress much smarter to match my hair.
