Toner for blonde hair

i have coloured medium brown hair and had some blonde highlights some time ago which I loved. However after a while they went brassy so haven’t had them done again. Talking to the hairdresser she said that I needed toner every three or so weeks to keep the colour cool. But it’s £28 plus blow dry on top of that. She couldn’t recommend a product that I could use at home. Can anyone make any suggestions? Am a bit nervous of purple shampoos but maybe there isn’t an equivalent of the toners that hairdressers use? Am 75 but was so pleased with the highlights!

I use Bleach London toner from Superdrug about 4 weeks post highlights just to brighten things up. My hairdresser recommended it and I’m happy with the results. I also use their purple shampoo and conditioner every 3 washes. Hope this helps

Would a chamomile based shampoo work on the highlights? I know it's nice for natural blonde shades. Yves Rocher used to do a brilliant (and inexpensive) chamomile shampoo but I don't think the brand is available in the UK anymore. Try googling chamomile shampoo and take it from there.
You could also try very strong chamomile tea, or if you can find some sort of essence/tincture. Maybe herbal shops or Amazon would sell something like this.
Try experimenting and also pay attention on how it may affect the darker hair. Ideally you'd want to keep the contrast in colours.

My hairdresser recommend Pro:Voke Touch of Silver Brightening Shampoo
provoke.co.uk/products/touch-of-silver/

I use it once a week. It's really good & cheap (around £3.49/£3.99)
I got mine from Boots but they sell it in Superdrug & I've also seen it in Bodycare, Savers & Wilkos too.

Toner for blonde hair

Fanola is the only purple shampoo that is a proper toner and actually works.
They use it in salons
The ones you buy in the shops never do anything.
Buy it online and use a tiny amount and leave it on for a couple of mins and rinse and it takes the brass right out.

You can buy Wella colour touch toner on Amazon, the Lilac frost one neutralises yellow tones.

Wiseowltaylor · 09/11/2022 02:05

I use bleach London and it's fab

EmmaC78 · 09/11/2022 09:25

I use Fanola too and it does work.

raffegiraffe · 09/11/2022 10:00

The b blonde silver toner is the best I have tried

FlutterbButterfly · 09/11/2022 10:03

Another who recommends Fanola no yellow, amazing stuff. Available from Amazon in a big bottle and lasts for ages. Got over use as it is slightly drying.

psuedocream3 · 09/11/2022 11:32

You actually only need a purple conditioner, charles worthington is very good and repairing. I only use an actual purple toner (wella) once or maybe twice a year.

SummaLuvin · 09/11/2022 13:18

not an answer on the toner bit, but most salons will offer a 'blast dry' rather than full on blow dry which is much quicker and therefore much cheaper.

Plump82 · 09/11/2022 13:21

I'd also recommend Fanola as well as this www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B07KD769RL?psc=1&ref=ppx_pop_mob_b_asin_title which is brilliant.

RealDeeBliss · 09/11/2022 13:25

Another vote for Fanola. That Provoke stuff is so drying and does nothing in terms of colour.

I use this. I think it's less in b&m. It is very drying but then you just use extra conditioner and it's fine. Leave it in for a few minutes. They do a masque as well (don't use them together) and that makes my hair lovely and soft. It's by far the best I've ever used (including the expensive ones) and makes my hair a beautiful colour.

I have used the toner you can buy in boots - I think it's John Frieda. Little gold bottle. It's ok but not great and definitely not better than the provoke stuff.

PammieDooveOrangeJoof · 09/11/2022 22:57

I use Lee Stafford hot shots for blonde hair which are amazing and make my hair look really glossy too.

Twinsgranny · 10/11/2022 00:10

My goodness, so many choices, thanks everyone. My hair can be a bit dry so will have to take that into account.

I use purple conditioner every wash to ward off the brassiness. The L’Oréal one.

Softpebbles · 10/11/2022 08:27

My hair dresser also recommended Fanola. I use it once a week.

lindyloo57 · 10/11/2022 15:09

I go between the fanola, loreal and the provoke they are all good

princessbear80 · 10/11/2022 17:56

I’d also recommend Fanola, it’s the best of the shampoos, if you’re looking for a shampoo. It is very drying though, so use it once a week max.

I’ve just started using Shrine drops instead. You add a few drops to your conditioner, leave it on for 10 mins and it acts like a toner. Don’t think I’ll go back to Fanola now (which is a shame as I have a jumbo size bottle!). I saw them recommended on Sali Hughes’ instagram. I use the white blonde one but there are loads of colours.

Puppylucky · 10/11/2022 19:34

Second Shrine - although I am trying to keep grey hair silver - as it's really easy to get the toner strength you want.
