Where do I go to get a whole new load of makeup?

I suddenly realised the other day that most of my makeup is about 20 years old. All my lovingly hoarded but seldom-used eye shadows, eye pencils, blushers…
Even if they weren’t little pots of bacteria by now, I have a suspicion that they wouldn’t do a lot for me, 20 years down the line.
In the olden days, I’d have gone to MAC, Shu Uemura or Bobbie Brown for a makeover. What’s the best makeup counter nowadays for this sort of thing? Thank you!

I would love the name of the South London MUA please @DeborahVance ! Have been meaning to sort out my terrible make up skills (and products) for a while

Thanks for sharing this, it is really very useful.

I recently had a similar problem and just went into a department store and randomly picked Dior. The lady did all sorts of 'matches' and I walked out with all the basic and some high end stuff. Cost me a bit but I've never been so pleased with my primer/foundation/lipstick. Got a few compliments too. I guess it comes down to the luck of finding the right staff who can help you pick what suits you best.

Of course! Louise Heywood louiseheywood.com/

She is absolutely brilliant, highly recommend

I have recently discovered Revolution and their make up is brilliant. Colours are highly pigmented, vast range of products, affordable and none of it is tested on animals.

I think the Dior make up assistants are very well trained. Dior make up is lovely.

Selfridges do a service where they use lots of different products from different brands. Costs about £40 but is redeemable. If you do some research in advance on brands you would like to try, they will have those ones ready for you (you can message them in advance). Best to book for an early morning at the weekend or on a weekday, so that it isn’t a rush and you can visit individual counters afterwards if you need more time.

last time I went, my MUA was great and we focused on foundation and tried about 3 brands. She made a lot of effort matching and I ended up buying lots of what she recommended.

selfridges carries all of the brands that you would need (Armani (love the foundation), par McGrath (for amazing eyeshadows), Charlotte tilbury, Dior, nars, etc etc). Some of the other London department stores might have a similar service.

Forgot to say that for skincare I would recommend beauty pie. Have loved 80% of what I have bought from there and it is good value for money versus the department store brands.

Their make up is ok - I have some lipsticks and eyeliner that I like, and their foundation is a good everyday knock off of Armani silk (but not as good as the real thing).

Everyone follows YouTube tutorials or Lisa Eldridge these days.
I'd probably go to one of the large department stores on Oxford street and choose one of the people on a counter that looked interesting with regards to makeup

SomethingNastyInTheBallPool · 09/11/2022 13:08

@PerditaNitt I had no idea Selfridges did that, and I have some unused Selfridges vouchers. I feel a plan coming together - thank you!
