Where to shop for good quality, lasting pieces?

I feel like my shopping style is too disposable and I have way too many low-quality clothes. I want to switch to buying fewer things that will really last, and are mainly natural fibres and ethical. I don't want to spend huge amounts of money on clothes but am prepared to spend a bit more on things that will really last. Any suggestions of good places to shop?

Book a personal shopper at John Lewis, that will give you loads of ideas to have never thought of

I see people say this a lot and I do wonder at a) how long you want things to last for - insofar as do you think your tastes will change over time and b) I've got things from Primark that are fine after ten years of constant wear and things that have gone to rags from much more expensive and - you'd hope- long lasting brands.

I think it's more about choosing natural fibres where you can which will wash better and avoid things with elastane or fibres that will bobble etc.

It means going brand by brand and actually looking and feeling each item, unfortunately.

Absolutely agree with pp in that you can find things that have lots of longevity in Primark and awful polyester rubbish in Jigsaw. Sometimes there seems virtually no correlation between price and item. Fabric is so important as is taking care when washing.

I’d say Levi’s for jeans. Maybe BAM and Thought but kind of depends on your style.

I’d love it if there was a go to place where I’d always find something good quality, reasonably priced and suited me but that just doesn’t seem to be the reality.

What sort of things do you need, what is your style, and what is your budget?

Jadoube · 06/11/2022 17:02

@LadyOfTheCanyon I’m trying to buy less, buy better and have found it easiest to focus on the things which I replace with the nearest budget option when they die, which is basically saving up to incrementally improve the backbone of my wardrobe. It is both satisfying and really dull.

You are lucky if things from primark last that long, I don't buy much from there, but things I have brought over years, jumpers balled up with the first wearing, cotton vest tops, the seams twisted after one or two washing, I did buy a long black gila last winter I still love it, and the wash cloths are lovely and soft for getting makeup off,
