Kerasilk salon treatment

Any recent reviews on having this done? I've checked a few past threads but they were mostly a while ago. I'm not sure whether the treatment has changed at all.

It's supposed to be a formaldehyde free version of a keratin smoothing treatment, so gets rid of frizz but doesn't totally straighten, which is what I need. I don't look great with super-straightened hair, but I have thick wiry frizzy curly hair naturally. I use Babyliss big hair to dry and smooth it and like it then, but if I step outdoors at all, it will just frizz up again, no matter what products I use. AndI mean frizz up really big. I've used all the serums and products, so thought maybe the Kerasilk might help.

But I have tried ColorWow, which is supposed to make hair smooth and shiny, and loads of people rave about it, but it made my hair seem coated and even more wiry than usual, really big and wild. So I am slightly worried that a Kerasilk treatment that eveyone said is smoothing might end up doing the same thing - coating each hair so that it then looks huge. Or making it utterly flat - the ends especially need some curl in them or they look ratty.

So any experiences? It's quite expensive, but once or twice a year I could do it. I have coloured hair - would be totally grey otherwise - and get the roots done every 5 weeks or so, so I'm not sure how this would fit in with that.

I read one review that said it depended a lot on who did it, and that sometimes the first attempt was great but then getting it done again later on made it look awful, and that is a bit of a worry too.

I guess if it turns out awfully, I could always use the wrong shampoo/conditioner to make it wash out quickly?! (I think you have to use special products to keep it lasting).

I started a thread on this but didn't have it.

i opted to try a home treatment recommended here. I don't want to name it but it's horrible. I also tried Color Wow, didn't have issues but it was a waste of money.

the home keratin has sort of given my hair a dry coating and it's horrible, I am hoping to wash it out. Debating asking Amazon for money back but I suppose results aren't guaranteed.

it has also made my hair look huge but in my case, that's a good thing. But I won't be trying kerasilk. I'm just going to have to tie my hair back and use a lot of product on frizzy days.

Thanks, that's what I'm worried about, the sort of 'coating' feeling, as that's what went wrong with the ColorWow stuff. I'll be interested to know if you manage to wash it out. I wouldn't mind trying it so much if I knew it could be undone if I had to - I'd be cross at wasting the money, but at least I wouldn't spend months with hair even worse than now. It looks a bit like a witch costume really

You are brave to do it yourself!! I know that I wouldn't be able to get it covered well as I have so much hair, very thick and wild. I can't even colour it myself. Plus I live alone, so no-one around to help or check that i've got it covered or anything.

I thought the Kerasilk was the one I'd go for if I do because it was one of the two or three that don't have formaldehyde or formaldehyde-producing reactions, and also as a result of that, doesn't totally get rid of the curls (apparently! Reviews vary. I don't want to get rid of the curls, just the frizz).

Well, I just did a regular shampoo this morning

it has got the worst of the crunch out!

i won’t go trying to wash out more but just do it as I wash my hair. It has definitely added volume but that sounds like the opposite of what you want.

I think it’s okay to say the brand. It’s ANSWR. It was recommended on here, it just didn’t work for me. I am disappointed with it leaving my hair so rough to the touch though.

I should have bought directly from them as I think they have a money back guarantee.

HuggyWuggy · 06/11/2022 04:06

Definitely try Kerasilk and not an Amazon bought, do it yourself job!

MapleLeafForever · 06/11/2022 12:11

oh yes, absolutely not planning a DIY job. I thought the Kerasilk as it was less risky that some of the other keratin treatments. I'm still worried about whether it will work, though, or just make it wirier and bigger, especially in humid conditons.

im just back from a mammoth hospital thing with mum

sfter 20 hours I still have big hair. It would normally be flat as a pancake by now. Perhaps they should sell it as a volumiser.

Colour WOW also left my hair in a stringy mess. I've had two Keratin treatments at the salon (not Kerasilk). They left my hair flat and lifeless and it got greasy really quickly. I now use L'Oréal Steampod to straighten.

LocalMum21 · 07/11/2022 05:36

I have my hair chemically straightened, a reverse perm, that is great. I have very frizzy hair but I can just wash and leave it to dry now without the frizz. It’s the matrix one my hairdresser uses. I only need it doing every 8/9 months and the solution is around £30.

I've had Kerasilk. Loved it. Can still colour your hair. I think it s success really depends on the type of hair you have though. I had been told for years by hairdressers that I had the perfect hair for it. They were right. You have to use the shampoo and conditioner they give you too. If you don't you'll ruin it. Or at least use another sulfate free brand

MapleLeafForever · 07/11/2022 07:32

What is the perfect type? Did you have it by the same person each time - I've heard it changes a bit depending on how they do it, and that determines how flat or straight it is.

My biggest problem is weather humidity. No matter how much/which products I've tried, I simply get enormous bushy wiry hair when I go outside, even if it's not raining or anything, just vaguely humid (which is most days in the UK!). I try to walk a bit during the day when I'm doing things instead of using the car, but I always look like such a mess, even when I've tried to blow dry it smooth, or used products, or anti-frizz hair spray, or straighteners, or whatever.

I don't mind the curls - I don't want to get rid of those necessarily, but this weather frizz is the worst!

It's the Kerasilk I was most interested in rather than some of the other chemical straighteners, as I wasn't sure about the formaldehyde in those ones, or how it would interact with colour. I think Cezanne has another formaldehyde free one, and possibly NanoKeratin though I'm less sure about that. The formaldeyde free ones apparently don't straighten so much as they can't without the chemicals, but just smooth. Apparently. I'm still a bit doubtful after reading so many people raving about things like color wow that was so bad for mine.

So I would describe my hair as having very thin strands but I have a tonne of it. Wavy but doesn't nicely hold the wave, just frizzes. Humidity is not my friend.

So I would say mine went fairly straight, it definitely removed my natural wave but it also removed frizz (the most important thing for me too). I didn't blow dry or straighten it for months, just let it dry naturally. My hair grew a tonne from that and the lack of heat over those months greatly improved the condition.

I've only had the kerasilk once. Was then either pregnant or breastfeeding but will definitely get it done again when that's all over.

I'd previously had many traditional Brazilian blowdrys. The ones where you can't wash your hair for days after. Much preferred the kerasilk.
