First bra for ASD DD

Wasn't quite sure where to post this but style and beauty ladies tend to know a lot!

DD is 10 and is just about getting to the point of needing a first bra. She has ASD and struggles with the sensory aspect of clothes. She currently wears the very soft, stretchy crop tops from M&S which work well. I think she needs something similar but that offers some support. I don't think she will tolerate cotton or a traditional bra clasp.

Please help!!

Tbh she might never accept a bra. Mine won’t even accept a crop top. My older dd has worn bralettes which are still soft and stretchy but not as supportive.

SheWoreYellow · 04/11/2022 09:12

These are a bit supportive

how about a sports bra? My teen autistic daughter has graduated from a cotton top to a sports one which offers more support but without the clasp and it is a similar shape.

Those H&M ones look great

Branleuse · 04/11/2022 09:14

Crop tops are fine if shes comfortable in them.

This.

I am 42 and have autism and have large 34GG boobs and I hate bras. All of them. I’ve been properly fitted etc etc. I just can’t stand the feel of them. The most I can put up with is a crop top from Primark.

WHEREEL · 04/11/2022 09:21

Autistic woman here too. I can’t stand jersey bras. I’m a 34 F and I have a panache bra from Bravissimo. I like my boobs to have a lot of support and to be held up firmly. I don’t like the look of sagging boobs and hate them flapping around.

Being autistic is only one part of your daughters identity. Id approach my autistic daughter in the same way I would if she wasn’t autistic. Id let her choose a few different styles, try them on and keep the ones she prefers.

Mine won't tolerate a bra and only wears specific crop tops! I'm autistic too and love the feel of a well fitted bra, it's like a hug to me!

Try stuff like this: uk.sloggi.com/women/10213199.html?color=0004_Black&cgid=s100000

Different ones are available.

SteveBuscemisRheumyEye · 04/11/2022 11:21

Ooh, the sloggi ones look good!

DD has tried everything on offer and her current bra of choice is a Primark post-surgery one as it is very soft everywhere.

SteveBuscemisRheumyEye · 04/11/2022 11:26

@WHEREEL of course it's only one aspect of her identity. However, she hates shopping so I was hoping to get a steer on places that may have the sorts of things that will work for her to minimise her distress

www.sensorysmart.co.uk/brubeck-comfort-cotton---ladies-bra---seamfree---beigesand---br00012---see-bundle-offers-17627-p.asp I got this one for 11 y o Dd and she's fine with it. She will wear it for school so she 'doesn't get bullied or an awkward lecture from a PE teacher' 😐but otherwise goes without. I think it is OK. I'm never sure if it's really a necessary thing or a societal pressure, needing a bra.

Being autistic is only one part of your daughters identity.

As an autistic person, I kind of disagree with this! There is no aspect of me which isn’t autistic. Being autistic is part of my whole identity, not something discrete that can be separated out.
