How to translate flat chest dimension of a cloth to chest size?

Hello!

I am having difficulty to understand UK sizing in casual hoodies etc.

I have a hoodie that if laid flat, it is 24in edge to edge and the mid chest level.

How would that translate in sizes where they say chest 42-44in etc?

I think making it 2x24=48in would be huge, so the flat dimension does not seem to translate to a chest size as mentioned in clothing webshops.

Any idea?

Thanks!

Remember patterns have ease. So something like a hoodie designed for an individual with a chest of, say, 42" might well measure 48", because the pattern might have been created with 6" of wearing ease.

Flipside is items made with stretch fabrics like leggings which have negative ease - laid flat they measure less than the human they are intended to fit

Is it for you?

If so I would measure around your chest / bust and use those measurements.

If its mens sizes chest 42/44 means it would comfortably fit a man with chest measuring that size and not be tight.
Measure around the fullest part of your bust then that is generally your "mens" size. Obviously men usually have bigger shoulders etc but that's a rough idea of what to go on.
