The unicorn of coats...

Warm, waterproof... and stylish?! Does such a thing exist?

It's for my walk to work. I can't find anything that ticks the stylish box!

Help please oh wise ones.

No, alas it doesn’t exist

FatAntelope · 03/11/2022 21:56

I think you should aim for warm and stylish and use an umbrella.

PammieDooveOrangeJoof · 03/11/2022 22:02

It does not exist I’m afraid. After years of searching I resorted to a stylish one and have just ordered a Uniqlo down jacket to layer up underneath for when it gets colder and will use an umbrella.
Big coats/waterproof coats make me look and feel like a sack of old spuds.

ColeensBoot · 03/11/2022 23:16

Bizarrely no. The closest I've come is Uniqlo down coat, with Uniqlo waterproof over it. Like a 2 layer event. Cozy and waterproof and a reasonably smart silhouette. But not as nice as a fitted wool coat. But they are not waterproof!

Wibbly1008 · 03/11/2022 23:17

Buy a great coat…and an umbrella. Sadly your unicorn is unavailable 🥹

Salacia · 04/11/2022 07:28

Rainsisters? Although will need extra layers once proper winter hits…

ouch321 · 04/11/2022 07:52

Thing with umbrellas is that wind generally accompanies rain and once it's windy umbrellas are useless.

Hoods are better and don't require you to have a spare hand free.

levitybrevity · 04/11/2022 07:57

I'm no expert on style but can recommend the quality on this brand.

twinkleteas · 04/11/2022 08:20

Rains coats I think? But they're extremely expensive

HandyGirl76 · 04/11/2022 14:06

I was hoping to avoid a brolly as my commute is up a hill and it's bloomin' windy.

Please can someone invent the unicorn coat Confused

I went through this last year, my cos puffer is water resistant but I wouldn’t wear it in a downpour. I looked at Rains capes and Stutterheim coats (beautiful) but there was too much uncertainty for me over warmth and room for layering for that price. I ended up with a Rainkiss poncho which is stupidly expensive for what it is but does provide me with a waterproof layer with loads of room underneath for warm stuff. It’s not to everyone’s taste but I do get compliments off strangers.

Dogsgottabone · 05/11/2022 08:43

Ilse Jacobson coats.

Not too warm as you'll get hot walking.

FeralWitch · 05/11/2022 08:46

Seconding Isle Jacobson. I absolutely love mine.

EvelynBeatrice · 05/11/2022 08:51

Sympathies. I have the unicorn of coats - for me - but it’s on it’s last legs and I can’t find similar anywhere. It is a fake fur ( not too thick) lined raincoat/ Mac design smart and reasonably tailored in navy with black fur trim and generous hood and pockets. Long enough for me - comes to just above knees. Can wear with both navy and black work clothes or jeans. Waterproof too. Was a John Lewis one from years ago. They did it in plain black too. I so wish clothing designers/ manufacturers would always cover these basics when designing women’ clothes. A proper hood is really essential. Umbrellas useless in wind, if you have small children/ stuff to carry etc.

SimonaRazowska · 05/11/2022 11:27

I got one

It's from Creenstone and was very expensive

But I wear it all the time

HandyGirl76 · 06/11/2022 11:07

Thanks everyone.

I have an Isle Jacobsen coat but was after something warmer. I also don't think it's that waterproof...

Will take a look at COS and John Lewis and let you know if I find one (at the end of a rainbow...)

I have a stutterheim which is brilliantly waterproof but not warm and so waterproof the water runs off it straight onto my legs.
I have a rains jacket which is v good but neither are really smart.
am looking forward to layering my new Uniqlo down jacket under both of these now though!

ColeensBoot · 10/11/2022 13:19

Hey have you had a look at the new for this year Uniqlo coats?
There is one called ultra warm hybrid down.
And another called hybrid down coat.

These might fit the spec?

ColeensBoot · 10/11/2022 13:20

I like the grey seamless down coat, but no mediums left.

PollyIndia · 10/11/2022 13:28

Rains have launched waterproof puffers i idly noticed

EmmaStone · 10/11/2022 13:51

Depends on definition of 'stylish' IMO. Do you mean something tailored?

I've got a triclimate parka from North Face, the style of which I really like, and it keeps me both warm and dry.

Wiennetta · 10/11/2022 17:55

The best I’ve found are warm, waterproof and simple. I wouldn’t go so far to say they were actively stylish, but they don’t make me look like I’m off for a hike.

I’d look at Scandi brands like Elvine (I like this one in Heather and this one is very simple)

Rains do waterproof puffers too.

OhMerde · 10/11/2022 18:12

Fleece lined, warm and winter proof www.hollandcooper.com/products/brecon-winter-rain-coat-black

Bobbybobbins · 10/11/2022 18:16

I have one that is warm and waterproof - wear it loads. One that is stylish - wear it less often!
