Dark Hair with Grey what will Blonde Semi Permanent Do?

SevernEleven · 02/11/2022 13:07

I've got mid/dark brown hair with about 10% grey hair.

If I put a dark blonde semi permanent colour on them (thinking Nice n Easy Dark Blonde) will it cover the grey and look like highlights?

What will it do to the dark brown, I know it won't lighten it but will it coat it and make it look dull?

Depends on the shade of the dye/peroxide % and shade of your own hair. Worst case scenario it would slightly lighten your own hair making it warmer/ginger

Semi permanent won't cover gray hair. If you want more shine try a gloss treatment

Purpleavocado · 02/11/2022 14:08

Mine is about the same as yours, I don't think that colour would show up much other than to go a bit gingery.
I went through a phase of doing my own highlights and used light blond, as a pre colour before at home highlights (just don't do it) and my hair was very warm blonde. It was also like straw.
I then went to the hairdressers to blend in the grey with proper highlights. That was a good colour, but my hair still ended up feeling like straw from the bleach needed to lighten my hair for the highlights.
Basically, anything that really lightens my hair will make it turn to straw.

An you post a picture of your hair now?
Avoid putting a lighter colour on your hair, it will colour those few bits of grey and lift your dark hair giving a ginger/red glow

SevernEleven · 02/11/2022 16:37

Thanks everyone.

Ah, see in my head I thought that the grey would end up light brown and look like natural highlights and the rest of my hair would stay as it is. But if the semi is going to lift it, it'll go ginger and that won't work for me.

Up until a year ago, I've been having highlights and permanent colour between the foils but my hair is very fine and wavy/curly and is easily damaged and olaplex only makes it worse.

What I really want is something that will cover the grey hairs as they look like single strands of silver thread. Back to the drawing board!

Use a semi permanent only slightly lighter than your hair colour, it will make the silver less obvious.
You could try a colour shampoo. The Superdrug Colour Effects one is quite good.

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 02/11/2022 16:43

It will cover the worst. Go for dark ash blonde. Ash always comes our darker but at least won’t be orange.

mrsrobin · 02/11/2022 16:45

OP I have similar - dark hair but with more like 20% grey or more. I have used Nice & Easy Semi in the past - a light blonde - and it did cover to a certain extent. But the best I have found is Marion Gloss Hair Colouring Shampoo - it is a sachet and you just wash in like shampoo. I leave on longer than it says. It stays on for weeks and weeks - BUT - this might be because I have curly hair and only wash it once a week. It might be worth a try...

JiggingJigsaws · 02/11/2022 16:46

I think it's going to make you orange.

I'm using Wella Color fast or something or other, it's not permanent and it's ok for now. I have less than 10% grey but annoyingly it's all right on my parting.

I think highlights are the best way to conceal grey, I'm not ready to take the plunge just yet but I plan on going blonde when the greys ramp up.

mrsrobin · 02/11/2022 16:46

Sorry I meant to say I used Nice and Easy DARK blonde not light

creideamhdóchasgrá · 02/11/2022 16:50

Would you consider keeping the grey and working with it? A good cut / edgy cut on dark and grey hair would look good?

Maybe invest and get your colours done and a styling session instead? They advise on colours that suit including your “pop” colours,, style, hair colour and accessories. One off payments to boost your look and no more hair dye. Liberating.

These are good if you are in London (no relation) and an internet search would find others.

Have a look at this thread, there was a poster recommending a coloured shampoo which seemed to give brilliant results https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/styleandd_beauty/4643812-dark-hair-going-grey

looking to blend my greys in with a light brown semi permanent colour- the rest of my hair is dark brown, semi has no ammonia or peroxide, do you think this will work? Does anyone do this? I’d like to make the greys look a bit lighter than my natural colour but worried it will do funny stuff to my existing natural brown; what do you think?

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 06/06/2024 08:04

What works for me is a light blond semi permanent and then a brown colour conditioner after every wash, like John Frieda Brilliant Brunette, which seems discontinued, and I’ve used up my stash.

The combination gives me just enough colour, with no brassiness.

Thinking of trying Aveda next, or Plantie.

Ooo does this work? Have you got dark hair? If so Does the grey resemble highlights? Also does the blonde semi do anything to the dark? I know it won’t lighten it but does it dull it?
tgank you so much for posting xx

Not too dark but not blonde either.

Light brown, but cool, so the cool light blond gives me some root coverage and the brown tones it further.

it won’t work if you’re very dark I suppose.

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 06/06/2024 11:16

And I don’t do the semi often, 6 to 8 weeks or so.

I do this but with permanent dye and no brown shampoo. My natural hair is mid brown. The blonde dye makes it slightly less dull but the regrowth is only ever noticeable on the greys, which yes do look like highlights from the sun after a couple of washes. I think it would be fine on darker hair. Its a very easy thing to DIY because even if I miss a bit during a root retouch it makes no difference to the overall effect because it barely alters the hairs that aren't grey. Such a revelation after years of dying it brown and hating the red tones.

You’ve got me thinking though, I could use a dark blonde. I’m going to try it, thank you !

Hi, thank you for answering, does the light blonde semi do anything to the dark?

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 06/06/2024 11:34

I think the darker blondes tend to go red, and if you go for something Ash, which is cooler then best in mind that they tend to come out darker.

it’s trial and error I’m afraid.

No! Actually I meant to say I use the dark blonde - but no, the darker stays the same colour but it looks okay with the lighter "highlights".

WomenStuff · 07/06/2024 14:48

I currently use shade 7 in josh wood which actually calls it lightest brown, they changed the name I think? Shade 7 is called blonde in other makes. Undertones are golden, not red.

It's the first "brown" that hasn't gone reddish for me.

That’s a good tip thank you, I hate the gingery orange look ☺️
