Hair crowns and partings changing as you get older

Is this a thing?

As I've aged, the way my hair grows and falls has changed so much. My natural parting used to fall in a normal position, to the left of centre but still on top of my head. Now, I have a ridiculously strong crown very far to the left and just at the point where my head slopes down. It's so strong that various clumps of hair want to lie forwards, others over to the middle etc. I'm really struggling to find a style that works with it and suggestions that hairdressers have made up until now haven't worked.

I was just wondering if other people have found this happening as they've aged, possibly as they reach menopause?

I think I'll have to assume by the lack of response that it is just me!

Not your experience exactly, but as I’ve got older, my hair has become finer. This means the parting I had for years no longer works. I have to kind of rough it up, so a clear parting isn’t as clear.

Mymenoname · 01/11/2022 11:38

That's interesting @AnnieSnap. I don't think it's what's happening here. My hair was always fine but I had a lot of it and I think that's still the case.

I dont understand. Your hairline is lower or higher or what? What does a strong crown mean?

Neither! It just doesn't behave as it used to.

Apologies if my description wasn't clear (I thought it was). Both my hairline and my crown have stronger idiosyncrasies, with some bits of hair wanting to lie the opposite way to the bits next to them or the way they should be lying. They can't be trained or styled to do what they would have done in years gone by.

Not just you. My parting has moved down my head on the right, my crown used to be on the right but is now on the left (which combined with the parting makes for some interesting hair days) and during the swapover I had a double crown (even more mayhem). The hair itself however remains as thick and stubborn as ever.

Bugeyedowl · 02/11/2022 15:45

It's not just you. I've always had a v slight cowlick on the crown but recently it has gotten bigger and more prominent, like my middle parting continues to go half-way down the back of my head! It never used to do this. I've been really conscious of this lately and I'm noticing this more on so many other women, young and old, even Eastenders actresses have this!

It can't be just age - I've been wondering if the Covid vaccines have been causing this? Haven't been able to find much info about it online at all.

hoorayandupsherises · 02/11/2022 16:10

My hair has started refusing to part anywhere than centre over the last couple of years. I'm 40, it is not the most flattering parting on me!

Mimilamore · 02/11/2022 16:22

My hair has tried to turn into my mum's since my 60s. I always had a cowlick at the front so a fringe was impossible and a double crown and a nape whorl. I could still have a reasonable parting and a sort of bob...
Now as my hair has started to turn grey it has thinned ( that has stopped by using biotin) but I have not only a cowlick but some crazy zig zag parting, with some hair insisting on coming forward. The very front is now frizzy and when damp curls!
My mum had very wavy, fine hair and it is if this is trying to fight it's way out.
I can do nothing with it at all apart from keep it clean, I usually bung it into a haphazard pony tail and try to forget but it is a pain.
I feel for you !

JiggingJigsaws · 02/11/2022 16:23

I hear you. I have a double crown, beat that.

Homewardbound2022 · 02/11/2022 16:28

I used to have a pronounced widow's peak in my youth but it's now disappeared.
On the parting, my hairdresser said it's a good idea to change sides every so often, to give the hair a rest and reduce strain.

OldTinHat · 02/11/2022 16:31

I went from having straight hair to having crazy curly hair after pregnancy. I'm 51 now and my hair has its own personality, postcode and social life - I've given up with it, it does its thing with no reasoning!

I use ColorWow root cover up powder in a shade to match my hair to disguise a finer parting. Works really well.

AnnieSnap · 02/11/2022 17:58

@Pinkittens I’m happy with my messy pixie cut, but good to know that’s available.

Mymenoname · 02/11/2022 21:59

Wow! I thought I was going mad or something! Thank you everyone for confirming that it is indeed 'a thing'.

Has anyone found a style or have any tips to help matters?

@Bugeyedowl my cowlick has gone mad !
I’m over 60 and it’s gone from a slight flick to having a mind of its own

Bigslippers · 02/11/2022 22:09

Ive got a double crown with is a nightmare to try and style
Both crowns are at each side at the top of the head.
Ive long hair and cant scoop it back in a ponytail as the two bumps stick up and look like devil horns
My hair is very argumentative and wont do as its told.

JiggingJigsaws · 03/11/2022 06:31

@Bigslippers same! Right on each corner iykwim! needs to be washed daily because them as well. Nightmare.

SNC2 · 18/01/2023 03:22

I read your post with intrigue!
I have experienced exactly the same. There's so little information about this particular issue. I have resorted to taking photographs of the back of my head to track progress - no improvement.
I am guessing that much of my younger hair mass & follicles have said their goodbyes and the hair I used to toss back, was in greater quantity and covered the obvious parting. I'm 50, by the way and the obvious (& strange) hair growth pattern started to become an issue about 5 years ago. My abundance of hair has simply disappeared! The thing is; the hair growth patterns were already there, they just weren't on full display. My parting now falls slightly off-centre and then after a couple of inches, takes a turn, then another and another. It's like a 'S' shape and very determined! I also have a double crown (or possibly triple), as well as two hair whirls, left and right of my forehead. I'm naturally wavy. My hair also falls forward all the time, making the back look even thinner. Nuisance!

Sophiebear04 · 22/07/2024 09:34

Can’t be Covid vaccines, I’ve not had any. My crown has moved position I can’t believe it lol

friendlyflicka · 22/07/2024 10:27

I have curly hair that is quite straight and smooth at the top. I am 57 and parting my hair was never an issue. I didn't understand about cowlicks etc. Now I really do. I find it so difficult to find a place to part my hair where there is not a tiny curl insistent on bouncing the other way at the front. I was wondering if this was age the other day. My hair is not grey and hasn't changed texture or thinned, just seems to be producing my wayward curls at the hairline.

KettleOn919 · 22/07/2024 11:08

Yes. For most of my adult life I wore my smooth, floppy hair in a smooth, floppy fringe. Now I'm in my 60s and 70% grey (and no longer floppy) I've developed a fierce cowlick on the left that makes a fringe an impossibility. I don't want to walk around looking like I have a radio antenna on my left temple. Also, however much I try to style my hair it insists on lying close to my head until it gets to my ears, then flaring out suddenly. I look like a human shuttlecock. With a a radio antenna.
