Donating stuff to charity shops- what's accepted?

I have a load of socks that are hardly worn (Boden) as they are too thin for under my boots. They came as a pack of 4/5.

Would any charity shops take them as a 'bundle'?
(I am assuming not, but they are too good to throw out.)

Or any homeless charities?

I'm assuming no one on Vinted or Ebay would buy?

It might depend on the shop. I've seen second-hand bras and socks for sale. As yours are in excellent condition and a good brand, I'd hope they'd be accepted. That said, your other suggestion may be a better option, as well as very thoughtful, as that way you'd know they'd definitely be going to someone in need.

Loads would take them, esp if they are paired nicely so the sorters will see theyre not to be sent to the rag van

DoodlePug · 28/10/2022 23:51

Mine certainly wouldn't, they barely seem to accept anything, think most goes for rags.

Do you have a local woman's refuge? Probably no address listed but if you give them a ring they'll tell you what they need.

Homeless charities always want socks, although it tends to be more men's.

Care4Calais charity would love them, they collect for recently-arrived asylum
seekers. You’ll need to find a local contact as they don’t have shops but instead have volunteer networks

Our local homeless shelter accepts socks but not tights (unless new). They are always extremely grateful for donations.

Has the Charity Commission's inquiry into how this organisation is run and managed concluded?

LovelyDaaling · 29/10/2022 07:30

Many charity shops accept underwear donations. If yours don't, put them in a poly bag and drop them in a clothes bank (usually sited in supermarket car parks).

LucilleGrey · 29/10/2022 08:39

Thanks all.

I'm not too sure about the asylum seekers option but certainly the others.

They would sell on vinted etc, either to sensible people looking for a bargain, or foot people!

RidingMyBike · 29/10/2022 08:49

The Olio app is worth a try - I've used it to rehome all sorts of things!

I've seen socks in charity shops but the more obscure/independent/small high street ones rather than say Cancer Research.
