I plan to sell 95% of my wardrobe on Vinted

Ohmygoshposh · 27/10/2022 08:30

I have too many clothes. I can’t see the wood for the trees.

I lack proper storage space in my house so lots of clothes are piled up in boxes and not laid out well. It makes getting dressed feel overwhelming as I have too much stuff and I can’t see it all, I forget what I have and I have too many things to properly know what goes well with what. This means I often put on an outfit, realise it’s not quite right but don’t have time to change, so end up feeling rubbish all day. Or I just reach for my faithful leggings and sweater again & again.

I have a charity shop/bargain/Vinted addiction, so while I have some fantastic individual items, overall my wardrobe is a random mish-mash of different styles. Lots of things that don’t go and lots of stuff not suitable for my lifestyle.

I’m not actually sure what my style is, but I WFH full time, live in the countryside so spend a lot of time walking in mud, in the garden etc. So I have little need for the nice dresses and shoes I am drawn to.

I’m seriously considering selling / donating the majority of my clothes. Just keeping a few practical and nice things that I genuinely need & love. Then to the extent I need something like say a nice dress for a wedding I’ll just buy one off Vinted, wear it, then sell it on. I simply don’t need a wardrobe full of going out dresses these days sitting gathering dust.

I’ve put some stuff on Vinted & already made over £100 in two days. (Most of my stuff is sought after brands, and I price to sell as a lot of it was second hand in the first place so I’m not too fussed about how much I get for it. I also donate to charity.)

The money will be useful with increased cost of living.

Anyone else done this or is tempted?!

Can I just ask, if you have quite a few low price items to sell, say boys high street clothes, is it better to sell them in bundles, or sell individuals and allow buyers to make their own bundles if they want to?

I was thinking bundles, but sometimes I am put off buying a bundle if there are some things in there I don't like. But then I have bought bundles before because they are easier?

ZeldaWillTellYourFortune · 28/10/2022 17:14

I have spent much of the pandemic in the same three identical pairs of jeans and six black short/long sleeve tees.

Not thinking about clothing has freed up so much mental space. I still have some dressy/funky items that I enjoy but for the most part, adopting a uniform has been very freeing. I just bundled up another bag of useable discards for charity shop.

bjjgirl · 28/10/2022 18:00

I am trying to do this, will be putting on a few items daily

megletthesecond · 28/10/2022 18:12

I can barely sell good quality high street stuff for £1 or £2 on vinted. I've sold two things in 3 months.

I’m so looking forward to this! I had a rare visit to the office the other week and got excited about the opportunity to “dress up”. But then I had limited time to choose an outfit, was overwhelmed with choice & ended up wearing something I don’t even like that much! I asked myself exactly why I was wearing it, and the answer was simply “because I have it”.

Life is too short to wear stuff we feel ok in. I want to feel good every day, even if that does mean always wearing a uniform, or similar kind of things.

I don't sell stuff because... I worked out when I was 50, nearly (gulp) 20 years ago that I only needed a very limited range of clothing for my everyday life --just very good versions. Jeans and sweaters, mostly. But I have multiple colours and shapes of both. These days, I mainly update accessories. But I keep occasion wear and inherited stuff, because nothing is ever finished, unless the moths attack, and silhouettes come and go.

ZeldaWillTellYourFortune · 28/10/2022 21:02

@Ohmygoshposh

Same here; I also had a rare visit to the office last week and was dithering about what to wear (and it doesn't even matter) and eventually laid out my clothing the night before like a child. Really out of practice.

My jeans/black top scheme can be dressed up a bit with a scarf and jacket for running to the shops, or with a chunky silver necklace for Zoom or Teams, or be just fine for working in the garden. It's SO much easier to just wear the same thing all the time. No one notices or cares.

I do have special dresses for parties, weddings, funerals, etc. but they all are folded neatly in one large drawer of a wardrobe. And I do have other tops/pants/suits in the closet but far fewer than before.

It's hard to part with things but once they're gone I never think about them again. Obviously unique items or vintage things stay, too.

Enjoy!

Polkadotpjs · 28/10/2022 22:04

Anyone else hoping she's a 14 and wanting to buy?!!

Doowop1919 · 29/10/2022 07:17

I'm finding this thread very inspiring! I have far too many clothes and recently had to pack away my normal clothes to make room for my pregnancy clothes🙄 I was packing stuff away just thinking this is ridiculous.
I'm inspired now to sort out my wardrobe and get rid of loads of stuff. I don't have big brand names though...things like Hollister, next, new look so unlikely I'd be able to sell. I would give stuff away to charity instead!

LizBuin · 29/10/2022 07:42

I've found the Stylebook app to be really helpful in streamlining my wardrobe. In the past I did six-monthly sessions where I moved my cold-weather gear into "storage" and prioritised the warm-weather gear, and vice-versa. Problem was I'd then forget what I already had, and first sniff of Autumn I'd buy yet another navy jumper, or pair of black boots.
Having a visual reminder on Stylebook has made it so much easier to see what I already own, and what I need or don't need to buy.

Catslovepies · 29/10/2022 15:27

I'm finding the thread inspiring too and I listed 8 new items this morning after having procrastinated with no new listings for a few weeks. Lots of favourites coming my way and one low offer so far that I haven't decided whether to accept. But yes it's addictive - I've been using it for about a year now and have definitely spent a lot more on there than I've made.

Ohmygoshposh · 29/10/2022 20:48

Yay for everyone who’s inspired!

Sold 2 more pairs of jeans and a jumper today.

@LizBuin I tried Stylebook but gave up as couldn’t be bothered with the uploading process. But might be worth another shot once my wardrobe is slimmed right down!

OP posts:
LizBuin · 30/10/2022 08:24

I don't yet have everything uploaded to Stylebook, it's a work in progress, but when I buy something new I make sure to add it straight away because it's easier to cut and paste direct from the retailer's website.
I'm gradually working my way through photographing my older stuff, it's tedious but it's really made me assess what I need to keep or ditch.

Bumzoo · 05/11/2022 16:34

I'm going to start this tomorrow.

Are there any tips for a brand newbie? I've bought a few things but never sold anything anywhere.

mathanxiety · 05/11/2022 18:42

That sounds fantastic. I have a lot of nice quality clothes that I'm sick of seeing unworn because they don't fit me any more, and things I don't need because of a new work environment.

I would advise you however, to keep a funeral outfit and a weddingy one (well, two, one for winter and one for summer) and not wing it if an occasion arises when you need one or other.

StamppotAndGravy · 05/11/2022 18:53

I'm curious that you say it's so cheap in the UK. In Europe it feels really expensive with everyone asking €30-40 for Cos or Ted Baker. I've come off because I've been burnt by scammy sellers too many times and at those prices it's not worth the risk. I'll try to download it again when I go back to the UK!

PrincessofWellies · 05/11/2022 18:55

I've also adopted a sort of uniform, with me it's wide leg jeans and skinny rib polo necks. I've sold loads on Vinted too, and bought a few things like polos and wide leg m & s jeans! I can't be bothered with stuff I put on then immediately take off because it isn't quite right. They go straight to sale now. Makes life a lot easier.

Duchess379 · 05/11/2022 19:01

I can't get my head around Vinted. I put some clothes up for sale & people 'liked' them & that was it! No sales!! So I took them off & sold them elsewhere 💁🏼

TheUniversalsHere · 05/11/2022 19:16

Just a tip on sending, you can send online using royal mail and they have a promoon at the mo for tracked postage. Your postie can collect your parcel for free and even bring label if you don't have printer. Very handy esp if you're in the arse end of nowhere

MarigoldMoonStone · 05/11/2022 19:27

Inspired! Doing this tomorrow, have so many clothes I never wear and never get the chance to wear. I already sold a lot, mainly kids clothes on Vinted but going to be much more ruthless with my own wardrobe tomorrow and save the money back for some post-baby new clobber!

OldReliable · 05/11/2022 19:40

I had loads of clothes in the loft that i was keeping for when i lose weight. If i do lose the weight, which could take a couple of years, will i want to wear those clothes again? No. Probably not.

I bagged them all up and took them to the charity shop. I could have sold them on vinted but having them out of the house and off my mind in one go is priceless.

Ohmygoshposh · 05/11/2022 20:45

update - I’ve sold around 70 items and I’m now at over £500 which is fantastic - I can definitely use that amount of money for something really worthwhile.

Wardrobe looking so much better - everything is organised & I no longer have the random stuff piled up at the bottom, and the hanging stuff is no longer stuffed in so I can sift through my clothes easily.

I’m also really pleased that I’ve managed not to fall into the trap of just spending my earnings - I’ve bought a handful of bits but it’s all stuff that’s properly thought out & I’ve considered what I will wear it with, when I will wear it rather than just succumbing to temptation to buy random pretty things.

I no some say they don’t sell on Vinted. I think I’ve been successful because:

1 I take good photos and plenty of them, including labels

2 My stuff was all “desirable” brands, so top end of the high street like Whistles, Reiss, Mint Velvet, Cos (as opposed to supermarket/M&S/Next.) I think people are much more likely to search on Vinted for brands that are “aspirational”.

3 I price to sell, so a Whistles / Mint Velvet / Boden top or trousers £8/10. I’ve sold a few things by very sought after brands like Me + Em for £15-20. I have sold some M&S / supermarket jeans but they were all quite current styles (mom/wide leg) and I sold them for £3-£5.

that’s fantastic! I was keeping loads of going out / occasion clothes. But it’s so rare I get to go out somewhere that I need to dress up, that as & when I do I always want something new. So realistically I wasn’t going to wear those dresses again

Juicylychee · 05/11/2022 20:51

amazing OP! I am going to start selling again.

Snoopsnoggysnog · 06/11/2022 01:27

I’m doing similar and have also sold loads on Vinted, a mixture of basic and high end brands, both my clothes and children’s clothes but not random kids t shirts etc, only occasion wear.
find Vinted v easy.
I see it as a way of getting more than I’d get at a car boot, where people take the absolute mickey!
i also wanted to add that I’ve given loads away on the Olio app - eg. Things that weren’t selling or household bits and toys etc. my local charity shops are hardly accepting anything.
