Could Lidl shampoo be ruining my hair?

My hair has gone from being basically fine, a bit frizzy when it's damp, to being totally unmanageable - I look like I've stuck my finger in a socket. It won't lie flat, it feels straw-like, in fact it looks and feels exactly like it did when I'd had highlights a few years ago and it totally fucked my hair up.

Anyway, the only thing that I have changed in the last few weeks is going from proper Head and Shoulders to the Lidl own-brand version, to save money.
Could that be it? Has anyone else found this?

It could absolutely be that, considering it's the only thing you've changed? Having said that I swapped from H&S to the Aldi version with no issues. I am sure you'll get a lot of people along recommending expensive shampoos etc but to be honest I like Alberto Balasm level ones Grin and I then use an anti dandruff every other wash.

CurlsLDN · 26/10/2022 06:59

Of course it could - different shampoos suit different hair types. Just switch to a different brand and see if it improves after a few washes. Doesn’t have to be expensive, I like Alberto balsam

Do you use a conditioner?

Head and shoulders and anti dandruff shampoos in general are a bit shit for hair. Even if you have reoccurring dandruff you shouldn't use them for every wash. DH has reoccurring dandruff and uses Tgel. It smells like death but is better for his dandruff and hair than head and shoulders ever was.

Squirrelsnut · 26/10/2022 07:02

Yes, not all shampoos will suit. Ant-dandruff ones can be quite harsh. I like Faith in Nature and the Elvive Hyaluronic one.

Squirrelsnut · 26/10/2022 07:02

Ant dandruff! 😄

Head and Shoulders type shampoos are really harsh, try something more gentle. Silicone heavy moisturising and smoothing products make my hair very dry and crispy too.

My hair improved when I started using XHC shampoo and conditioner which is only £1 from B&M but quite gentle and doesn't contain SLS or Silicone.

Thank you everyone!
I've used H&S for a long time (with occasional others in between), and it's always been fine. I was just hoping to save some money if the Lidl one was basically the same. Other cheap or mid-range shampoos make my scalp flake and itch, hence pretty much always using H&S.

I used their shampoo and conditioner and had awful hair. My hairdresser said they were like cotton wool 🤐

lawandgin · 26/10/2022 13:18

@JesusMaryAndJosephAndTheWeeDon which XHC do you use please? I'm currently using some very expensive silicone free shampoo and cannot justify it while on mat leave!

Laurdo · 26/10/2022 13:19

Try a non-sulphate shampoo. Sulphates strip your hair of it's natural oils and can dry it out. How often are you washing your hair? Are you using conditioner?

If you have wavy or curly hair it may be worth looking into the curly girl method. Life changer! I only use shampoo maybe twice a month and usually wash with just conditioner and a scalp brush. Use a leave in conditioner too. This reduces stripping thr natural oils and adds moisture.

TheKitchenWitch · 27/10/2022 10:27

I wash it every other day, it gets a bit lank and greasy at the scalp otherwise.
I do have quite a bit of natural wave in it, but unfortunately if I leave it to dry like that it looks shit so I definitely don't want to encourage that 😁

I've bought a different shampoo and conditioner to try (a middle-priced one for dry hair) and just one wash and it's already made a difference, so I've answered my own question really. Massively annoying though! And I'll have to see what it does to my scalp. H&S is just way too expensive for what it is.

The Aldi Aussie knock off totally wrecked my hair

Any of the liquid ones (not the bars), I like the banana best but the strawberry is nice and the green tea.

Yes

My sister who gets eczema and psoriasis on her scalp as well as having dry skin found an SLS free shampoo was a game changer.

Anti-dandruff shampoo made her scalp more itchy and flakey, as did lots of the mainstream brands available in the supermarket. She uses Happy Naturals or XHC
