Help me wear high heels

BelBabe · 25/10/2022 08:12

So for as long as I remember high heels have always caused me pain. Pain in my feet, pain in my soul.

In my younger student days I would attempt to wear them, but after a couple of drinks and a couple dances off they would come and be shoved in a bag along with my dignity.

I eventually came to terms with the fact I was just not a high heel person and have lived my life in flats. I even wore flats to my wedding.

However, I have a very big work event coming up and everyone is going all out getting dressed up and the high heels are calling to me

The problem that I had with them was the burning in the balls of feet. I've tried the little insert things byt they never help. Looking back all the heels I wore were cheap Primark pairs and I'm wondering if I invest in a good quality pair would the comfort level be higher?

What style is the most comfortable, I was thinking maybe like a closed toe block heel? Any tips or suggests welcome!

You're brave OP. You will now get plenty of people telling you that you have sold out to the man by wearing heels and that no adult woman should make that choice. Ignoring that she might want to.
YY better shoes, in general, will be engineered better and will be more stable. The exact placement of the heel and where your weight sits is important. They also need to fit really well, but that's more a matter of trying plenty on.
Block heels are very easy to wear, sometimes you can get them shaped so they give a more slender look.
Remember to try your heels on with the exact hosiery (or none) that you will be wearing.
Have fun.😀

I hate heels but I find that a block heel, with a slight platform, that straps on your foot is the least uncomfortable option.

Lcb123 · 25/10/2022 08:21

Can you wear heeled boots? That’s always what I find most comfortable
otherwise if you have the budget for it - Esska shoes are so comfortable! Had them for my wedding and wore them until the end

Subnauctic · 25/10/2022 08:23

If your balls hurt, it's usually because the heel is too high (putting more pressure on the ball of the foot) and there is inadequate cushioning in the sole.

I agree that getting a better made pair will probably help. Price doesn't always equate to better made BTW (looking at your DMs!)

Also make sure you get the right size. I've found with the cheaper high street shoes (Primark, New Look etc) the sizing for shoes is as random as it is for clothes. I generally need to size up in cheap shoes.

Try proper ballroom dancing shoes - the only heels i can wear

Flyinggeesei234 · 25/10/2022 08:50

I absolutely love heels for evening OP, I get get it!

I’d go for sandals rather than closed, always find them more ‘comfortable’ as more room for your toes

Flyinggeesei234 · 25/10/2022 08:52

Or good ankle strap like these www.office.co.uk/view/product/office_catalog/2,37/4358690175

Pipsickl · 25/10/2022 09:00

i Would go for a fuller shoe or something with a strap , and buy some of those jelly cushions for the balls of your feet.

also take some flats in ur bag so if you wanna dance or the heels hurt too much you can pull the ripcord 😁

noworkie · 25/10/2022 09:16

Oh with a platform in the front. It isn't as much pressure on the balls of your feet then. You can get court styles as well with a platform. Hobbs, LK Benett or M&S. a
Almond toes are much more comfortable too than pointy.

sarge89 · 25/10/2022 09:19

Many Dune heels have memory foam in the part where the ball of your foot sits. They are all I can wear. Worth a look perhaps. They're not cheap but I can wear them comfortably all day. These ones are my favourites: www.dunelondon.com/ashen-comfort-mid-block-heel-court-shoes-black-0085504510001011.html?glCountry=GB&gclid=Cj0KCQjwkt6aBhDKARIsAAyeLJ1HdOmvN63spfyzjXuLWFkj-hQw2dMWiBs2buX5QnMKo6cMlq3XfaYaAuOQEALw_wcB

Bobbybobbins · 25/10/2022 09:20

Try loads on until you find a heel height that is comfortable for you. The aching balls suggest the heels were too high.

bakehimawaytoys · 25/10/2022 09:26

Agree you need lower heels - a block heel in a "kitten" height is going to be the most comfortable. Make sure the sole is cushioned too. Have a look at Peter Kaiser or Gabor, or Russell & Bromley if you don't mind spending a bit more. I prefer open toes to closed but it probably depends on your foot shape.

AlwaysFoldingWashing · 25/10/2022 09:31

I once heard someone say if you tape your third and fourth toes together it helps to take the pressure off a little bit?

You can also get gel sole inserts from boots et. which I use in heels and find to be helpful

I've got a pair of marks and Spencer's heels which have a built in cushion which are really comfy

Flyinggeesei234 · 25/10/2022 09:34

But kitten height block heels aren’t high heels!

OP can you clarify how high you mean?

threegoodthings · 25/10/2022 09:37

I'd understand wanting to put yourself through the pain if heels were still the height of fashion, but they're really not anymore

No need to be dictatorial by fashion @threegoodthings - women should
wear whatever they want.

ElizabethinherGermanGarden · 25/10/2022 09:45

Size up! Get at least a half size larger than you would normally wear, and if your feet are normal width, go for a wide fitting if you can. You can fill the gaps with those gel pads. It helps a lot if they are not pinching as much.

A blocky heel, a platform and an ankle strap will help, too. A shape like this one:

ElizabethinherGermanGarden · 25/10/2022 09:47

If you have your heart set on a slim heel, choose a slightly curved one that is set a bit forward, under the middle of the ball of your heel rather than straight down from the back of the shoe.

xogossipgirlxo · 25/10/2022 09:54

I can't wear stilettos. I just can't walk in them, my toes hurt. If I were you, I would not go for anything crazy, but rather choose mid heel like 2-2.5 inches, or block heel? I wore block 2.5 inches heels to my wedding and my feet didn't even hurt for a minute despite dancing till 3AM.

Maybe something like this? Court shoes are much more comfortable than high heels, because heel supports middle of your heel, not just the top of it IYKWIM.

I also like kitten heels, but I know they're not everyone's cup of tea.

No need to be dictatorial by fashion @threegoodthings - women should
wear whatever they want.

That's fine if the item in question isn't causing the wearer pain and they don't need help on how to manage that pain!

High heels are very much in fashion for AW 2022/23.

kittybloom · 25/10/2022 22:06

Try carvela comfort range and also going half a size up
