I know it's been mentioned before but I was on the whistles website earlier (which admittedly is pricey at the best of times) but there was barely any knitwear to be had for under £100!! Then I found a discount code for fat face online which I've never comes across before and then (...!) on the H&M website I see they now sell patches for if you want to mend the holes in your clothes. It just struck me how things have changed very quickly, the cost of clothing has really rocketed hasn't it?

Sadly Clothes will continue to get cheaper in quality and more expensive , things like the increasing costs of supply chains mean that manufacturers need to keep costs down, the only way is by using inferior fabrics.
So we are seeing really cheap clothes that are essentially cheap and very expensive clothes that are still cheap but a tad nicer than cheap cheap clothes. You really reach a stage where you question yourself why should I bother then with the all the midrange clothes?

I truly believe we’ve peaked in the late 90s and everything is down hill from there.
all my DM Chanel bags from the 90s are far superior than the cheap thin leather bags I’m seeing lately, and even taking inflation prices into consideration her 1996 beige caviar jumbo still cost less,

Acrylic is a waste of money at any price, looks crappy after a few washes, and the same goes for lots of other cheap rubbish clothing. Sad how it ever got to this state, rather than people buying good quality proper items and looking after them/repairing as necessary.

This has been my biggest bugbear with clothes for years. I studied textiles for years and as a result am a bit of a fabric “snob”. Whilst some of it has its place, I generally hate all the synthetics, the polysters and acrylics out there. Like others I buy a lot on Vinted and go for the higher end brands in the hope that fabrics will be better quality, but even then it’s not a given.

Stayathomenamechange · 27/10/2022 08:57

You could flip the question round and ask "How little is it acceptable to pay someone to make my clothes?"

queenofarles · 27/10/2022 09:03

I think a lot of the eco friendly pledges by high street brands are all just clever campaigning, it means absolutely nothing.
Other than Massimo Dutti and ME&EM I can’t think of a store I’d get something from that will last more than a year before I give it away.

I buy preowned from Vinted
Better brands than I can afford new
Way nicer Fabric and I just throw it in my wash first
Plus obviously the environmental benefits

Yes. I've just got into Vinted. Brand new clothes with tags, much much cheaper. Or worn and even cheaper!

It is still easy to find merino and wool knitwear for under £50. I have several merino wool jumpers from M&S and Uniqlo that are great workwear and have lasted several years; a quick look at their websites shows they are still doing them.

There seems to be less of a link between price and quality - Whistles have been notorious for passing off polyester shite for £££ for years.

I’ve never had much luck with Vinted/Ebay and whilst I like the idea I can’t be arsed to trawl through pages of shite.

I usually buy merino and lambswool from Uniqlo and M and S as well. Also John Lewis.

Need to attempt Vinted. Always been a bit scared of being scammed or given the runaround somehow.

Not like you can buy your underwear in the chazza though....

KirstenBlest · 27/10/2022 10:16

I do. Not knickers, socks or tights, unless still in the unopened pack, but I've bought and donated bras that have been tried on or only worn once or twice before realising that they were uncomfortable or didn't fit.

A word about Vinted - their customer service is atrocious! I was verbally abused by a seller and their response, even after sending screenshots as proof, was to do absolutely nothing to sort out the situation.
