Make up and skin care in my late forties

HyggeandTea · 23/10/2022 07:51

My word my skin has changed since the menopause.
I definitely look...well....older!
So I am thinking I could do with trying a different approach.
Any tips with skin care brands that could make me look a bit less tired/dull.
Also make up... the usual stuff doesn't suit me now. Decent brands or ideas for makeup on slightly less elastic skin?!

Thanks in advance x

I really like the Ordinary products but some people don't...... Their website can suggest a routine for you.

I actually turned to tiktok for advice on mature skin makeup and skincare. I compared a few - there are some good tips on how to still manage a winged liner etc. The best thing I took from it was Armani luminous silk foundation. Sits really well on my skin, copes really well with open pores and does t settle in wrinkles

You need to find a moisturiser that suits you and religiously use both their day and night cream versions. Start using a sunscreen at all times of the year , a good one at least spf 30 up to 50 .
I have also recently ( past few months started on a prescription only skincare ) which is the only real way to halt / improve fine lines and improve skin. I'll put up a recommendation code for the company . It gives you a months worth for less than £3.00 and 25% off your 2nd month ( I started it that way from here )
To be upfront it also would give me £5.00 off.

Here you go.
Company is Dermatica.

You fill out a few questions , take photos of your face , and then they suggest the best treatment for you. You would probably have tretonin ( highest % of retinol hence the need of prescription) alongside other ingredients to suit your skin needs.

If you want to improve your skin OP, don't bother with over the counter stuff it's not strong enough. You want prescription strength tretinoin and sunscreen. You usually need a dermatologist to get some, but the previous poster linked Dermatica, but there is also Skin & Me, or some online pharmacies sell it.

It can really improve skin texture and tone, and will improve fine lines and wrinkles over time, but it's a not a quick fix, and usually it takes time for your skin to acclimatise to it. Some people also go through a 'purging' phase where their skin peels and gets irritated for a few weeks when they start using it.
It works by increasing collagen production (which decreases as we age), speeding up cell turnover (which also decreases as we age) and improving tone and texture in the skin. But it's strong stuff, basically a medication in cream form which is why you need a prescription for it.
Have a look at some of the skincare threads on here, or search for info about it.

I'm late 30's, have been using it for a few years now, and I barely wear make up anymore as it has made my skin much brighter, clearer and fresher. Just make sure you do your research and use sunscreen every day.

Also a good vitamin C serum in the morning will help also.

Make up wise, in my late forties, the best thing I did was ditch power based products. Creams all the way now. So easy to apply and my make up lasts all day, isn’t dry or powdery.

I also cleanse, tone and then use the Clarins double wear serum. I can’t be dealing with layer upon layer of stuff and then moisturiser. Skin looks good.

This is the only cream I have ever used that I rate as making a difference, its a night cream, I usually manage to find it on sale somewhere

And for makeup I like bare minerals complexion rescue over a moisturiser.

TheOGCCL · 23/10/2022 13:54

Less is more forties onwards. The less make up I wear, the younger I look. But your skin needs to be good so echo prescription skincare. Strongest you can buy and not really that much more expensive when you see some of the prices of over the counter stuff including that No7 menopause stuff. And then SPF.

I'm sure that cream is lovely but it is over £200 😱all of the active ingredients (peptides, retinaldehyde, hyaluronic acid, ceramides) can be found in cheaper products. It also doesn't tell you the actual amount of retinaldehyde in the formula.
I recommended Medik8 earlier as I thought it was one of the cheaper brands (must have got it mixed up with something else), but it is quite expensive. Nice if you have the money to burn but not necessary to spend that amount.

But I agree that Retinaldehyde is definitely better than retinol, because it requires one less metabolic conversion in your skin to get to retinoic acid (tretinoin) which is the usable format.
Geek and Gorgeous have a retinaldehyde serum in 0.05% and 0.1% formulations for about a tenth of that price.

Honestly OP, the best advice I can give is do a bit of research - there are only a few key ingredients that will give a noticeable result, and you don't need a fancy brand name to get them. Get used to reading ingredients lists on products before you hand over any money.

I like Trinny London very simple and non cakey.

Thank you all. Lots to look into there. Much appreciated. (I am on a fairly tight budget, so may save the more expensive items for my upcoming lottery win!)
