School coat for DD year 7 ?

Anyone got any recommendations for me please ?
DD has a long bus ride and then a short walk to get to school and will need a warmer later soon.
Ideally something long enough to keep her legs warm and dry but light enough to be shoved in a locker ,
I don't have a clue what other kids wear as I haven't seen them in winter yet .
Any idea welcome - she won't want any of the types of coats I went for at primary !

Thanks

Can you ask her?
Does her school require a certain colour?

Shinyandnew2022 · 22/10/2022 21:31

Oh yes good questions ! I will definitely need to involve her but need some suggestions to start me off I think .
I don't think the school specifies anything but that is a good point perhaps I should check !
Back is probably safest.

Decathlon have a great range

Where does she normally shopmfpr
clothes?
iirc dd was wearing a New Look parka at that age.

Thanks for the replies - I reread the uniform rules and it just says coats must not be worn in school.
I think I need a light down coat that packs away - ideally longer than jacket length.
No idea if this is the right idea but would be very grateful if anyone has any online recommendations!

Decathlon was an option I hadn't considered but doesn't seem to have anything along these lines.

Will she wear it?
Given my Y9 and Y7 walk to school in the pouring rain without taking a waterproof coat, I wouldn't hold out much hope for a winter coat.

Thanks this is why I am overthinking - I have no idea what others do but she has started saying it's cold when she leaves the house. I can't resist the maternal urge to wrap her up warm even if she will soon decide it's not the done thing !
I think I just need to go cheap and lightweight

Do you have pavements? Consider if the coat has reflective bits for headlights, lots do in the camping shops. As a driver kids all in black looking down are actually invisible.

Does she want a duffel, padded, duvet style? Feminine?parka? We need to no her style more?

gnatgnu · 24/10/2022 08:29

Primark do their own range of lightweight jackets - these have served us well over the years - scrunch up really small to go in bag/locker but warm enough for winter. My DD also likes to wear a snood as helps to stay warm but easy to stash during the day.

I bought DD a super dry coat, lovely and toasty and loves it for the weekend - won't touch it for school. In the winter she has a pac-a-mac, umbrella, gloves and hat and just uses a combo of those (rarely the jacket).

It goes against the grain because I want her to be warm and dry, but then again she happily played rugby yesterday and it was chucking it down.

Bless you thinking she’ll wear it! I have 3 DD at secondary with a similar journey, bus ride and then 1 mile walk.

They each have a pac-a-mac in their backpacks which they will reluctantly wear if it is pouring down, they also have rain covers for their backpacks which they will also use to protect their books. The macs are big enough to fit over their blazers. When it’s colder, they tend to go for underneath layers as blazers stay on throughout the day. I also had some success with gloves and one of those big blanket scarves.

To be honest, with teens, I’m picking my battles. And I wear a coat, I’m not cold. And they have layers/coats to wear, if they choose not to, I choose not to fight over it!

Ha ha yes I know she may not - but she is complaining of being cold so it seems the obvious solution.
Scarf and gloves are good ideas but then I am going to need a bigger school bag !
I will check out primark .

They don’t wear long coats, mostly short jacket type, mostly black and with a hood. I know what you are talking about light down type but it will very easily get wet under the rain. The label depends on the area, sizing and your finances of course. Primark and New look are always safe options to suggest.
