Hair oil for dry scalp for 6 year old

Hi All. DD has been complaining that her head is very itchy. I've checked lots of times and it's not lice. I think her scalp is just very dry (as is the rest of the skin especially now that's it's colder and the heating had gone on). Her hair also looks very dry and frizzy.

I'm looking for an unscented hair oil that is suitable for children, however I want something that isn't smelly. I really struggle with strong smelling hair oil and I'm also worried that she'll be teased at school. She doesn't wash her hair every day so something that can stay in for a few days without going rancid would be great.

I've tried coconut oil and argan oil. The coconut oil smells horrible and seems.to.go rancid after a while and the argan oil stinks as well (which I think is scented). I know olive oil isn't recommended to be used on skin. Does anyone have any other suggestion?

Tldr: looking for a non smelly hair oil for dry hair and scalp suitable for children.

Thank you!!

There are loads of shampoos available for itchy scalps if you want to try that instead of oil? Google lists dozens.

Do an oil mask before washing the hair with any cheap oil. Leave in for one or two hours. Once a week. Like craddle cap treatment.
Camelia oil (Japanese). Its unscented. If you want something for everyday that actually works for the hair.
Also, it might be fungi and it's not dry so I would go to the GP to see if she needs medicated shampoo.
Dilute her actual shampoo and hair conditioner, this is advised for very long hair anyways, they might be too harsh on her skin.

I thought I had dry scalp but it was scalp psoriasis- oils make it worse. Go to a parmacy/ dr / nurse and see what they suggest. I have a prescription shampoo and gave to make sure my scalp / hair is totally dry before bed or it comes back. I now alternate prescription shampoo with the body shop ginger shampoo and conditioner.

Get her scalp checked first.

My dad is south Asian and I grew up oiling my hair. While we did, on occasions, wear it for a day or a bit more. I wouldn’t recommend it as a regular thing.

Dust and dirt sticks to it. Just from the air. It could make it worse, by clogging the scalp more. Especially if it’s psoriasis. Scalp oiling, in my experience, is best as a treatment used when you can leave it a few hours then wash off. I always did my dds on a Sunday afternoon, then washed and dried in early evening. Or on an evening and wash off first thing in the morning.

You also need to throughly cleanse the scalp fairly often to stop build up and let the scalp breathe. That could end up making the problem worse. I haven’t had psoriasis, so not sure. But a deep cleanse may not be the best thing.

There's a newish Tgel with salicylic acid that's really good for clearing the dry scalp. It's a clear gel rather than the brown coal tar one.

I agree with getting it looked at before you use an oil. If its seborrhoeic dermatitis or scalp psoriasis oil will make it a whole lot worse

Body Shop Ginger shampoo is fab for dry scalp. It's pricey but lasts for ages as you only need a little and isn't full of too many nasties.
