Dyson airwrap vs Shark Flexstyle

I am seriously useless at styling my hair (al a leftie which doesn’t help) and have been eying up the Dyson airwrap. Have just seen that shark have released something similar and MUCH cheaper - but is it as good? Would really appreciate real experiences as I don’t totally trust all the online reviews which rave about them both… thank you!

I’d love to know if the Shark is worth getting as it is much cheaper. I’ve watched a few comparisons on you tube and they look very similar but I think the Dyson attachments would suit my long, thick hair better. The brush tool on the shark is similar to the revlon brush, which I’ve got and hate. But, I despise Dyson as a company and don’t think I could justify coughing up £500 but I still want one. 😂

I posted about this yesterday, but didn't get any response. I've just ordered from John Lewis as they've just come back in stock. I'll do an update. The reviews are good.

This review is good if you have curly hair

Both Fleur De Force and SophDoesLife have done videos comparing the two and had fairly similar thoughts. I will put the main point below, but if you only watch one I found Fleurs video a little more comprehensive.

  • both work in pretty much the same way, so it is a good alternative for a significantly lower price (though still ££££)
  • The Shark seems more powerful and has heat options and can get hotter so is quicker to style whole head and style stays in for longer - (I'm personally not sure this is a benefit, if you are paying such a lot for a device because it won't damage your hair then why would you use a heat setting that damages hair? If damage isn't an issue then you would get a classic heat styler for much less)
  • The buttons and button placement on the Shark are a little more fiddly to use
  • Shark weighs more, though not enough to make a difference
  • Shark has a diffuser option for blowdrying, Dyson not.

This is really helpful, thank you. I have a history of believing that a new hair styler will magically sort my hair out (looking at you, ghds/babyliss bighair/revlon one step and random multistyler thing that I can’t even remember the brand for 😭) and don’t want to fall for the hype and get the wrong thing AGAIN. I’ll watch the videos later and am very interested in hearing views from people that have one or the other as well.

Oh forgot to say that I have fine flyaway hair, about shoulder length, frizzes easily if I don’t use product and can be wavy if I don’t interfere with it - cba to do the whole curly girl thing as it’s only a bit wavy and not full on curls.

I have the shark and I am pleased with it though only have dyson hair dryer to compare it too. It is hotter as a hair dryer. I use the volume attachment which is giving my hair more bounce though I can’t get the curls to stay but that might be me being rubbish!

torquewench · 20/10/2022 19:20

The Dyson one is crap. I had one from QVC but sent it back, way too much of a faff. Curls dropped out within minutes and the plastic brushes made my hair really flyaway. I use jumbo tongs and a Revlon One Step and get better results for far less money.
If you're not good at styling your hair now, a £500 gadget isn't going to miraculously make you any better at it 😉

SooticaSootyWhiskers · 20/10/2022 19:45

I have the Dyson hairwrap and must admit I'm a concert.
I did have to adjust my expectations, for example I can create lovely curls which drop into loose waves, but not defined curls. Initially was a bit disappointed but now quite like the casual look waves give.
It takes a bit of trouble shooting, for example best results I find are using the right products, wrapping when fairly damp and using hairspray straight after. The advantage of the wrap not being too hot is healthy hair and my hairdresser has commented on how good condition mine is in now.
Saying that it's a lot of money and if you can get away with a cheaper version I'd do that. I'd quite like a diffuser as well and sadly the airwrap doesn't have one.

I can’t believe you are telling me that it won’t magically make me look like I’ve just stepped out of the salon! 🤣
Appreciate all the input though, thank you. Sounds as if I should go for the cheaper one if the Dyson isn’t the magic wand I’ve been looking for…

This is a good review and she does another video comparing it to Dyson.

I have the Shark but have never owned a Dyson, although I borrowed my friends when we got ready once and liked it I couldn’t justify the price.

I actually really like it for giving volume and the bouncy blow dry look, the curls aren’t ringlets and they do drop but I haven’t used any product with them yet (as I don’t own any!). My hair is fine but there is a lot of it and it dries without frizz when I use the Shark which is great. I used to have to straighten every day but haven’t since I got this so hoping it will stop damage. I could have got similar results with a round brush and hairdryer but this is much less effort and doesn’t feel like I’m frazzling my hair! A few years ago my hair started falling out in clumps partly due to excessive heat styling so I’m super careful now!

If you have naturally wavy hair why not just use a shampoo for wavy hair, I really like Noughty and leave hair to dry normally. I don't need a curling creme with it.

MyNameIsAngelicaSchuyler · 25/10/2022 07:34

I LOVE the airwrap. Well worth It for me although it took 5-10 tries to really get the hang of it.

natural waves/curls look very different to heat styled ones, especially something like the Dyson which imitates a bouncy blow out rather than actual curls.

I ordered both the original dyson airwrap and the latest model. Returned both. Love how my hair looks when I do it but curls completely drop out after half hour. Watched endless videos and bought loads of different products 😟
I do want to see if Shark any better!!
