Which makeup/beauty products are worth the splurge?

I have birthday, Christmas and wedding coming up and want to treat myself/ask for some new makeup. I generally wear drugstore brands, am fairly ok with makeup application, but what items would you say are worth the splurge?

My skin is acne-prone so I can’t usually do heavy foundation but love the dewy, bronzed look. Would love anything that truly covers my hormonal spots and lasts all day! I often find my makeup is nonexistent my lunchtime even if I use a setting spray.

Doublewear foundation ,the hydrafresh one.

Clinique lipsticks
Clarins foundation
Clinique loose powder
Kerasilk treatment at the hairdressers
Origins skin care

Alumier has completely cleared up my skin. You can only get it from a practioner on prescription. Look up Jodie Beale Skin Specialist on Instagram. It's expensive but worth every penny my skin has never looked better!

Benefit porefessional
Struggling with my new double wear foundation. I was colour matched but it seems too grey.

Erborian CC cream
Paulas choice BHA
Argan oil coldpressed organic
No7 Hydraluminous foundation
Aurelia glow serum

Elemis Pro-Collagen Marine Cream -a true game changer for my skin
Ysl foundation
Ysl lipstick
Ysl setting spray
Delilah primer

These are my favourites after years and years of trying all sorts.

Kevyn Aucoin sensual skin enhancer (I use it as a high-coverage concealer)
hourglass Ambient Light powder in Dim Light (works as a light bronzer for my skin tone and gives a blurred effect - I got compliments on my skin and how well I looked when I used this, and I was a few
weeks post-partum and sleep deprived!)
victoria Beckam eyeliner pencils
charlotte tilbury colour chameleon pencil eyeshadows - very easy to use as a liner (smudged) or as an eyeshadow and the shimmer is really beautiful, not over the top
chanel rouge coco flash lipsticks (they have beautiful effect and seem to blur lip lines)

I think some brands do certain things better than others. There are so many variables and so much choice that recommendations might be very wide of the mark. Some brands run warm, some lean to cool and some aren't very inclusive colour wise.

I think:
Nars is good for foundation
Laura Mercier and Hourglass for finishing powders
Mac for lipsticks
Dior, Chanel for eyeshadow
Lancôme for mascara

I largely don't think brands good at makeup have good skincare and vice versa.

Revolution is a great Drugstore alternative / I've been really impressed with a lot of their make up.

My absolute go-to concealer is the Collection one, cheap as chips from Boots. I’ve tried them all, this beats Il Makiage, Charlotte Tilbury etc. hands down for me.

Wagsandclaws · 06/01/2023 23:29

Dior forever skin glow, Victoria beckham kohl in various colours, Lancôme drama mascara, hourglass dim light, Charlotte tilbury eye palettes - great colour payoff! Nars concealer, Nars tinted moisturiser for summer.

The best setting spray I have ever used to get a super glowy finish ( I used to use Charlotte tilbury ) is iconic london - it has little shiny particles in it and makes my skin GLOW!

Mac lipsticks, beauty pie lipsticks, omg you should try Chanel cream bronzer, it's amazing stuff - you get loads for the price too.

Laura nervier primer or the inkey list polyglumatic acid is cheap at £13 but is super hydrating and an excellent base for makeup.

Chanel quads are lovely and easy to use too. Huda beauty concealer, tarte cosmetics eye palettes.

My go to blusher is glossier which I mix with a little Charlotte tilbury Hollywood flawless filter - amazing results.

Happy shopping OP Smile

I swear by Charlotte Tilbury flawless filter and the airbrush foundation. They’re amazing! I also love Benefit Bad Gal mascara and Dandelion blush. Oh, and the Laura Mercier translucent loose setting powder. Hope this helps!

Tome Ford brow sculptor is really worth the splurge for me, it's a slanted stick in a perfect shade and has an inbuilt sharpener and brush too.
Elf halo glow a great dupe for C T flawless filter!

Isabelle70 · 08/01/2023 09:03

I love the Hourglass blushers and once I worked out which is the best for me I am really happy with the shade. I have just treated myself to the Ambient lighting palette, have tried it once and I think it did make a difference, I need to perfect my application but I did look better.
For skin care, I thought I had acne and have tried all sorts over the years but turns out I have rosacea and I have now been on Dermatica for nearly a year. No more spots, congestion on my chin and the overall redness has reduced. My skin is now so soft and smooth and I wish I had Dermatica years ago. A code if anyone wants to try, you can delay the subscription too mine comes every 5/6 weeks.

I also like the Venn vitamin b cream that was in the Liberty calendar and have brought another from eBay.
