Best home hair dye?

LuckyLuckyWoman · 19/10/2022 13:41

I know everyone will have their own favourite.

Due to cost cutting, I am going to try dyeing my own hair, usually have it done at the salon every 4-5 weeks.

So I need good grey coverage and something very easy to use.

Haven't done a home hair dye for many years, so it me with your best tips please :)

Get on salons direct and buy colour tubes and oxidant.

I like Inoa and Majirel

I honestly found casting creme gloss by L'Oréal the best for covering my Grey's.

Another vote for Casting Creme, two for one at Tesco currently.
Easy to apply, improves condition and fades out naturally.

I've found eSalon to be pretty good.

I always use L'Oréal preference

There’s no best really, if you stick with the well known brands such as L’Oreal, Clairol, Schwarzkopf and so on. I’m not trying to be obtuse but it depends on your hair and your target colour.
My best tip for a natural result is to stick with shades as close to your natural colour as possible, and never go lighter with bleach/blonde dye than the colour you were when you were a baby.
And remember reds wash out faster than non-reds.
It will probably take you ages to apply the first time. Start the timer when you finish applying. If you get an uneven finish you can do a total re-dye with the same box colour, even though the box says nothing about this.

I’ve only ever used nice and easy. I do an all over couple twice a year and use a root touch up box every couple of weeks (it takes 20 minutes).
I started at the beginning of lockdown and haven’t gone back to paying £50 every 4 weeks for my roots.

Whistlesandbell · 19/10/2022 16:55

I meant to say it takes 10 minutes.

Yellowtulips33 · 19/10/2022 20:31

Josh Wood best by far imo

Sago1 · 19/10/2022 20:42

I used E salon during lockdown, it was excellent.

LuckyLuckyWoman · 20/10/2022 12:06

Thanks everyone, my natural colour is white these days, so definitely wanting to get away from that :)

Could you match up a home dye with the couloir you have at the salon? My hairdresser gave me the colour code just before Covid.

Henryhooveredoff · 20/10/2022 12:23

I never knew about the colour wheel and scale until recently. Ask your hairdresser what number they put in your hair currently (it goes from 1 is Black and 10 is white blonde). Even home hairdyes have a code on the box that begins with 1-10. So hopefully you can get a better colour match. I always used to use the dark browns but my hairdresser suggested I use a 5 on my hair to get the shade I wanted even though it looks lighter on the box. Since then I've not ended up with the dreaded 'dark box dye'.

John Frida and L'Oréal Preference are the best for covering grey in my experience. Loreal Casting is only semi permanent.
