Would a clothes alterer be able to...

Alter a sheepskin coat?

I bought it in ages ago in a charity shop.

It's for someone with a much bigger bust and wider back. If it was thinner material I'd happily trim bits to take it in and dart the chest but there's no way I can without some sort of good machine!

Just love the shearling colour. Really regret getting rid of a sheepskin coat I had years ago from a charity shop!

If you have a local tailor, ask them. A modern commercial machine should be able to handle that, it's a question of whether they want to do it.

Thanks. I'm happy to pay tbh. A new shearling coat is £££...

It could easily become a taupe version of this: (£999!!)

It currently has a collar

I think a more industrial sewing machine could do this - so I would take it into somewhere which does alterations and ask for a quote .

One thing I would do is put it on inside out and pin where you think it needs taking in - this will help them.

Yes, but you need a good one. Real sheepskin presumably?

Like pp I'd probably look at a tailor before a seamstress, I presume leatherworkers still exist but I wouldn't know where to find one.

Zeeza · 17/10/2022 19:29

Our local tailor does leather. I assume they also do sheepskin.

Thanks all, I'll ask around. Sounds like it might take me a bit.

I asked the local handbag seller/ maker ( he's Italian and think he buys bags from local charity shops and re does them and sells them on) and he said I needed bigger boobs and shoved some plastic bags down there to demonstrate.

I didn't feel I could work with him...

Needs an industrial machine for the thickness. Unlikely a local seamstress would do this. Maybe ask an upholsterer? You never know.

I had one done years ago at a regular tailors. The sort where you go in to get jeans shortened or a dress taken in.

bobbinon · 17/10/2022 21:37

Thanks, I'll try them first and move on from there.
