What product to make my fine menopausal hair look thicker ?

PamelaBanisha · 16/10/2022 17:53

I have always had very fine hair now it tends to snap and not grow that long in the last few years.
I use heat protection spray and try not to wash / blow dry too often.

I need a miracle styling product to make it feel thicker and give it some body without weighing it down.

Can anyone recommend something ?

Nioxin Sandalor is a relatively new product which volumises your hair and acts upon the hair follicles to strengthen their grip on your hair and therefore reduces shedding. That’s my description.
I am on my second bottle, it works for me.
My hairdresser has not charged me for this product as she is my DD.
I don’t know how much it costs but it lasts a long time, used daily.

caramac04 · 16/10/2022 18:18

It’s over £30 but lasts at least 8 weeks

@caramac04 thank you I will have a look at that .

I think my problem is that my hair snaps especially in areas that I lie on at night and the sunshine and swimming this year took its toll.

Do you take HRT? My hair is twice as thick.(and eyebrows)

adriftabroad · 16/10/2022 18:43

Another thought... slepp satin/silk bonnets are trendy now! DD has one for her long curly hair to protect it at night.

adriftabroad · 16/10/2022 18:44

*sleep

It stops the snapping

I was just about to say this or a satin pillowcase - pretty good for your skin too.
I didn’t know about hrt, I had an easy menopause and haven’t had hrt but post-Covid hair shedding was awful.

Jessiesthedog · 16/10/2022 18:48

Microbead extensions or tapes something that’s not gonna drag your hair down but that is literally the only way that they can and you don’t have to have like a full head of these things you can have just a few like the Princess of Wales does

VioletTopaz · 16/10/2022 18:50

I like volumising powder. Use on your roots, after washing. I find it gives a decent bit of oomph and staying power to my style. This one is good

PamelaBanisha · 16/10/2022 18:50

I have been on HRT for about 6 months and recently increased the strength of the oestrogen. My testosterone was tested and was in normal range so my hopes of lustrous testosterone fuelled hair were dashed.
I have a satin pillowcase will dig it out. I was lucky enough to be away in the summer with lots of sun and sea which has really frazzled my hair.

Plantur 39 shampoo is meant to be good for fine, brittle menopausal hair. It’s caffeine based. I’ve just recently started using it.

adriftabroad · 16/10/2022 18:57

@caramac04 crikey yes, 3 months after a nasty bout of Covid and my hair, quite literally, came out in chunks!

OP, Ah, I do not have testosterone, just the same as you. I would cut back on as much washing as you can (sexy!) and leave it alone at weekends (when you can) and eat lots of salmon/oily fish.

Me and DD (14) literally have noticeable regrowth on the top of our heads since the Covid last summer. (Think mullet)

I live in Spain and know of what you speak re sun/salt water/chlorine. Destroys hair.

It[ll rally round, especially on the oestrogen and with a Victorian bonnet!!!

PamelaBanisha · 17/10/2022 08:49

Will look into a bonnet and am washing every other day . May try to stretch washing longer when I am working at home . My hair doesn’t get greasy I just feel a bit yuk when I don’t wash it .
Thanks for the suggestions

I had loads of shedding after covid 😞 so I've been using castor oil and rosemary oil as a leave in hair treatment (use over night every 3 nights then wash out in morning)

As it's meant to help. I even use the castor oil on my lashes and can already see a difference so I think it must do something x

I posted my experience on here of using a product that worked but Mumsnet has taken it down and then said that I had my message removed at my request. Which I didn't. Other people haven't had theirs removed despite naming products. Weird.

caramac04 · 17/10/2022 12:46

@DeclineandFall that is odd. I’m interested to know the product and I’m sure I’m not the only one.

bouncydog · 17/10/2022 20:05

I find viviscal is good. One tablet a day and then use one of their products prior to drying. Mine does appear to be thinning a bit along the hairline - hoping it will grow back but if not will just have to accept it. 😢

It was Absolute Collagen shampoo and conditioner. I have been using them for 6 months but not their supplements. Honestly it has been good- not miraculous but more growth particularly around the hair line, stronger hair, slightly thicker. I swim every day and have highlighted hair and so my hair gets wrecked but whatever is in it works for me. Maybe they thought I was advertising.

adriftabroad · 18/10/2022 14:53

They will have thought advertising I reckon!

I am going to get my sister to send me some if she can. Sounds like we have the same hair.
Thankyou.

Oooh interesting! I got fairly good results from their collagen supplements well I noticed my nails grew quicker and I was getting baby hairs grow and my skin seemed to look nicer. but they're really expensive so sadly I've had to stop using them 😞.

DeclineandFall · 18/10/2022 18:20

I took collagen supplements and noticed the same effects but it gave me uncontrollable diarrhea which was disappointing. It's a common colllagen side effect apparently. I started taking bone broth though and it is pretty good for my nails and skin and maybe my hair. The hair stuff does seem to work, I've managed to move my parting over towards the centre of my head as the short hair round my hairline grew longer. I have a little chicken pox scar on my forehead and you can see from photos that my hair has grown a lot round it. My hair is still fine but looks way better.
You have to keep using it though. It's relatively good value I have it on repeat order and the new order arrived and I still have half left of my old one. I sometimes stick a bit of another conditioner on as the AC conditioner seems a bit underwhelming sometimes. Prob because it's not so full of silicone. Might be worth a shot. If you can tolerate collagen supplements and can afford them they might be worth a go too. There's lots out there.

Clarabe1 · 18/10/2022 18:29

I have given up! I have a lot of hair but it’s fine and goes limp and frizzy easily. I Have tried everything. I now wear a hair topper which was cut and coloured to match my own hair for special occasions, it’s gives me loads of volume and blends into my own hair seamlessly. My hairdresser supplies them for hairloss clients and I asked her if I could try one out of sheer nosiness and I was amazed! My everyday hair is usually a messy bun, I like to think I look bohemian and carefree but the reality is probably more like Miss Trunchball…

EdinaMonsoon · 18/10/2022 18:54

I use Aveda Be Curly products. I don't have curly hair (it has a gentle wave at most on a good day) but they really thicken up my hair, take away the frizz without weighing it down.
